In that argument, the mother makes a comment about how she didn’t want children. Shortly thereafter she leaves with the next door neighbor (Jasmine) to sort things out. Until finally 35 years later they are meeting their mother for the first time since their childhood....more

Basically this man (can't remember name) lives on a desirable street where every year they decorate in unison for Christmas all to win the "best street" prize. They even have committes to coordinate decorations.
One year, the husband decides that since their daughter is away at college, they are going to spend Christmas in Hawaii. Much to the dislike of the wife who rather enjoys the whole festivities of the holidays, she agrees to go.
The whole neighborhood is up in arms at the fact that they are not decorating for Christmas which means they won't win the "best street" prize.
When the daugther calls to inform her parents that she is coming home for Christmas afterall with her new boyfriend, it sends the husband & wife into a frenzy of decorating, changing plans and stress.

The Kitchen God's wife is really a figurine that the Chinese buy that represents "good cooking" in the kitchen. Although not a very attractive figurine, the main character ends up with one and the story behind how she came about one.

I started this book right before going to bed and within 5 pages my heart was thumping and I was WIDE awake. I don't think I turned out the light until close to midnight. WHEW!!
OK - so the story is about 2 highschool sweethearts who after making love one is shot in the head.
The story unfolds with the history of the two families and how they met, how their children grew up together. You basically became a neighbor or better yet, you took the characters as your own family. Jodi Picoult is a master of opening up a story and feeding you all the details in such a way that you feel connected and in love.
Over the years it shares with you about how these to neighbor kids became boyfriend and girlfriend and how both parents expected them to marry they were such soul mates.
Once the book catches up to the shooting, it unfolds a twist that accuses the boyfriend of murder.
A heart wrenching trail opens even more doors to later find out that she committed suicide with the help of the boyfriend who supplied the gun and bullets.
After reading this book, you look at your own family and wonder how such a thing could go unmissed. How your own child could suffer so badly and neither parent picked up on any clues. How the love of a soulmate could really do the most unthinkable thing because of love. ...more
Where Kite Runner dealt with men and the relationship between men. A Thousand Splendid Suns is about the relationships of women and thier struggles in Middle East durning Tel Aban rise, where women are viewed close to being dirt.
The two main characters in this book happen to end up together by a plot twisted by the husband who takes on the 2nd main character as a mistress or rather 2nd wife. The 2nd character goes along with the plan because she is pregnant with her lovers child. The husband doesn't realize this until many years later.
Unfortunately, much like Kite Runner, this book was very depressing due to the fact of how women are treated, raped, abused, and neglected. It showed the 2 womens struggle to be a front towards the husband and ultimately kill hiim which places the 2 women in a much worse condition. Now they are unaccompanied by a man and hence can't travel, but they killed their husband.
The story ends with justice for both women or what is considered justice or I guess you could say "peace" for one and freedom for the other.
Truly disturbing and it makes my appreciate America or any place for that matter where women are revered....more

This book is about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she came to be. Basically from birth of a "green" girl, to how she grew up, her friends which included Glida, the Good Witch of the East and eventually Oz. Apparently in this version, the Wicked With of the West isn't wicked at all, but more accident prone. She is shy and quite the loner due to her color. In college she wants to join a revolution to kill Oz, but just can't do it. In the end when she returns home to her father in the forest, Dorothy has come to kill her. Instead of the Wicked Witch setting fire or about to set fire to Dorothy, whom she has now befriended, her dress catches on fire and thus Dorothy helps to save her by dumping water on her. Which as we know ends up killing her.

I didn't realize the lure of foot binding until the author explained it as she did. Very erotic. But thank goodness that tradition has since past.
A young girl coming of age (ages 4-6) is set to continue the tradition of foot binding. Once the prcoess is completed the "unveiling" is done in front of a match-maker. This match-maker does two things 1. will arrange a marriage based on how a girls feet turned out and 2. will tell the family thier daughters future. Fortunately, this young girl, Lily, was set to marry a very wealthy man because of her feet.
While Lily is waiting for the marriage, a young girl is sent to visit her and becomes her "sworn sister" or in todays terms, best friends. They share many secrets and develope a secret language that they write on a fan and pass back and forth.
The story really unfolds when Lily learns the truth about her friend, Snow Flower, and her destiny. That not all secrets were shared. The story continues as Lily learns about herself and how wealth has changed and hardened her as well as how she struggles to find compasion for her sworn friend again. ...more

However, this year, the coordinator/friend of all the trips unexpected dies. Since this person planned the itinerary, it creates this whole hoop-la over what the group should do...take the trip, not take the trip, what to see and what not too see.
Anyway, the group decides to go on the trip and the story begins from there. The narrator once again is a dead person (like Book Thief) and it becomes a funny story about how the group gets lost, ends up in all the wrong hotels overseas and actually manages to get kidnapped along the way.
I instantly thought of my mother in-law who enjoys taking one big trip a year with a tour group. I imagined this is how her trips could be without proper guidance.
The book was slow to start but it did pick up speed as the group headed on their journey. ...more
