I had really wanted to read this book for a while and I finally decided to check it out of the library and I am glad that I did! While this book did come off as more juvenile it was funny and adorable and just completely awesome. It mixes paranormal ideas in with mystery that leaves you guessing until the very end.
I loved the plot of the story. Students being attacked by a mysterious predator? Yes please! It was up to the main character, Sophie to find out who was behind the attacks while trying to discover exactly who she was and why everybody seemed to have a problem with her.
This book takes place in a magical school for prodigium (Witches, fae and shapeshifters) called Hecate Hall, also called Hex Hall by the students. I love magical schools (Um, Harry Potter!) and this school did not disappoint.
The characters were well developed and quite likeable, except for the mean girls but the point is to hate them. Sophie did come off as a little petty in the beginning but I still found myself liking her. She's funny and she sticks by her friends even if everybody else is against them.
Then there is Archer Cross, the resident sexy bad boy. And trust me you won't believe what happens with him *No spoilers here just read to find out*.
Then finally there are Anna, Chaston and Elodie. The three mean girls who try to get Sophie to join them in the beginning but eventually make it their sole mission to make her life miserable. They do a pretty good job of it. But by the end of the novel I found myself actually liking Elodie.
Overall, I found this book to be a quick enjoyable read and I reccommend it for anybody who has any interest in paranormal topics, whether it be witches, fae, shapeshifters or magical schools, this book has it all and combines it perfectly with mystery that will have you up turning the pages until you find out what happens...more
This book has one of the creepiest covers ever. I absolutely love it. This story sounds like it would be pretty creepy right? Well it is, in some parts at least but it's also very sweet and romantic as well. This is one of those books that I had to put down at night, solely due to the fact that reading ghost stories at night bothers me. I would however rush to pick it back up in the morning. This is a book that I won't be able to get out of my head for a while.
Just the first like of the description "Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story" was enough to draw my attention. I knew going in that this would probably end up being somewhat of a romance and it really did a great job of that by not taking over the entire storyline.
The ghost aspect was really refreshing, instead of the main character being afraid of ghosts or just being haunted by one, he actually sought them out to "kill" them. This really made the story interesting and the whole time I was wondering whether or not Cas would really be able to "kill" Anna.
The characters really helped make this book for me. Cas was an independent guy who wasn't part of mainstream society. He worked in the dark and kept himself distanced from people mainly because of what he did every night. He's actually a pretty sweet and caring person once Thomas and Carmel managed to get past his anti-social shell. Thomas was an interesting one. He was so shy and withdrawn yet he had this personality that just made me like him. Carmel seemed like such a snob in the beginning but as the story goes on we find out that she's actually much deeper than that. I loved Anna. Her story is so tragic and the things that she does are horrible. Yet there is so much humanity left inside of this girl who had everything taken away, she actually feels regret.
The story is emotional as well. There is the one scene where we finally learn Anna's whole story and believe me it's a sad one. I found myself getting upset and angry over the fate that she met and I kept rooting for her as the story progressed. The story had a shocking twist as well, I didn't see a lot of the things coming that happened and for that I was really happy, who wants a predictable ghost story anyway?
I absolutely loved Anna Dressed in Blood and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel. If you like ghost stories then I definitely recommend checking this one out. Even if you aren't that big of a fan of ghost stories, I still recommend this, there are plenty of other aspects to this story like romance, mystery and suspense.
This is one of those books that when I finished reading it, it was all I could think about. I'm not really sure why but I found it impossible to get it out of my head. I'm not sure what made me love this one, maybe it was the characters or maybe it was the idea of immortality or possibly the ghosts.
The idea of a girl who hears ghosts isn't exactly new in the YA genre, but I have never read a book that's done it quite like this one. Lenzi does hear spirits and it is her job as a Speaker to help these spirits find peace and move on from Earth. Along with her protector, Alden, she completes these spirit's last wishes. Sometimes though they come across a Malevolent, which is an evil spirit fueled by hate.
I really liked Lenzi, she was stubborn and went for the things she really wanted no matter what anybody tried to tell her. She didn't let her gift ruin her life and even though she was dealing with the supernatural she seemed pretty normal. We also have Alden, who is caring and intelligent. He follows rules to a fault and is willing to risk his life to protect his speaker, Lenzi. I absolutely hated Zak, Lenzi's boyfriend in the beginning, he seemed like he was bad news and I just couldn't deal with him. We are also introduced to Race and Maddi, two protector friends of Alden's, these two are funny and I loved the scenes that they were in, even if it was serious they still came across as fun.
This book has everything in it, action, suspense, some mystery and even romance. If you're a fan of any of these things I definitely suggest you give this book a chance, it's a quick and fun read. ...more
Oh My God! I loved this book. Truthfully, I had seen everybody talking about it on goodreads but I didn't check it out until recently. While reading it I could not believe that this was the author's first novel.
I loved the characters, from Alina to Mal and I have to admit I liked The Darkling in the beginning. They all developed beautifully and were realistic, even though some of them had "powers", they all had flaws.
The world that Leigh Bardugo created was simply magnificent. It was like Russia but at the same time it really wasn't Russia. I think this land has the ability to rival Narnia, that is how good it truly is.
This was one of those books that I couldn't read fast enough but at the same time dreaded ending. I will definitely be purchasing it since I checked it out of the library and will also be buying the sequel. Too bad I have to wait forever for it to come out!
If you haven't read this book yet you really should. It is simply amazing and it is written beautifully....more
Oh my god! I absolutely loved this book. Seriously this may have just become my new favorite book of 2012. I picked this up at the library due to the fact that I won an ARC of the sequel without realizing this book came first. And boy am I glad I won the sequel because I probably would never have discovered this amazing book. I am pretty new to the dystopia genre and every book I've tried recently I have loved, but this one just takes it to a whole new level. A sky that kills you? Yes please!
I loved the world in this novel. Outside of the pods that the dwellers live in the people who live on the outside, who the dwellers call savages, have little tribes and survive the best they can. It's a world that can one minute provide you with the food and water to sustain you and the next take your life. The people live in fear of the Aether and do their best to survive.
The characters were great and really likeable. Aria was a weak person in the beginning but quickly becomes a very independent and strong character. She's witty and sarcastic and doesn't take anybody's crap. There is also Peregrine. The outsider who appears rough and uncaring on the outside but harbors a deep need to help everyone he can and deals with a deep guilt that tears him apart. I fell in love with him, he's just so caring and strong and awesome. There is also his best friend Roar who we get introduced to near the end of the novel, he's sarcastic and funny and I think he loves himself but isn't obnoxious about it.
The plot of this story never slows down or gives you a minute to become bored. It's fast paced and packed with action. The struggles that the characters go through really tug at your heart and have you feeling the emotions they feel.
Do I recommend this novel? Yes, if you haven't read this one yet go out and get yourself a copy or borrow it from the library. You will not regret this novel....more
This is one of the greatest sequels to a series that I love ever. I've noticed that the second book tends to be lacking but that did not happen with The Sea of Monsters at all. It was just as action packed and engaging as The Lightning Thief. Maybe even more so since we get to see more to Clarisse and we get introduced to Tyson.
I was excited to jump back into the world of Percy Jackson and his friends so much that I started this book immediately after finishing The Lightning Thief and I am so glad I did. I still had everything that happened in the previous book fresh in my mind so when all of the action in this one happened I didn't have to try and force myself to remember information from the first since it was all fresh in my mind.
It was interesting to follow Percy to the Sea of Monsters. Just from the title I knew that this was going to be one action filled adventure and I was not disappointed at all. The fight scenes were so suspenseful that I was hurrying through just to find out if everyone came out alright and the race against the clock had even more dire consequences that I could only pray that they made it in time.
Percy is as funny as ever. I constantly found myself laughing at things he said or his thoughts. Everything that can go bad for this kid will and he's pretty much gotten used to it. I really missed seeing Grover in this one since he wasn't in it as much as the first but the times he was in it I absolutely loved. It was interesting to see more of Clarisse as well. She's such a difficult character to figure out. One minute she's doing something nice and then the next she's turning her back and acting cold again. I hope that we get to see more of her in the other books.
The whole addition of Tyson into the storyline shocked me. I honestly didn't see the revelation about him coming. But once it happened I figured it made sense and really added another whole element to the story. I absolutely loved Tyson. He was so adorable and so loyal, I really hope he's in the later books as well.
If you haven't gotten into this series yet I really suggest you do. You will not be disappointed and I'm ready to dive back in with the third book in the series. ...more
I had some serious doubts going into this book. Usually when a book is extremely hyped I find myself not liking it as much as everybody else. I am honestly glad to say that this was not the case with Cinder. Everything from the character development and the setting to the plot totally blew me away. I read this book in about 3 days and hated every time I had to put this one down.
When I first heard what this book was about I was a little skeptical, a retelling of Cinderella where she's a cyborg? It turns out that the author has a talent for taking classic fairy tales and reinventing them.
I loved Cinder. She was a fantastic character. She was well developed and had some sense and wasn't afraid to kick butt or stand up for what she believed in. When put with her Android friend Iko I found myself laughing at times and others just had me in tears. Then we have Prince Kai, who becomes the love interest even though it's denied for a while Cinder just can't resist his charms. I absolutely despised Cinder's stepmother Adri and her stepsister Pearl. They were the horrible characters much like the ones in the original tale, the only difference was that the other stepsister, Peony, was kind to Cinder and was her friend.
The setting of this book was fantastic. It's the world we all know but in the future. This takes place in Asia and all of the separate Asian countries have united to create the Eastern Commonwealth. I love how the author took time to describe things from the hovers that are used for transportation all the way to how the buildings are crammed together to house a large population.
This book completely blew me away. If you haven't read it yet I suggest you pick it up you will not regret it. I will be not-so-patiently waiting for the next installment in this series!...more
When I started this book I was kind of afraid that I wasn't going to love it as much as everybody else seems to, especially with all of the hype surrounding it. I'm glad to say that I absolutely adored this book.
I loved the world that Cassandra Clare created, her storytelling is magical and really drew me in. The plot was exciting and full of action and I found myself rooting for the characters and their struggles really played on my emotions.
The characters were so well developed and they all had a unique voice. I loved Jace. He was so witty and sarcastic, his lines had me cracking up and more than once I randomly started laughing out loud. He seemed hardened on the outside but once you got past his walls you could see that he was really quite vulnerable. I really liked Clary, she was strong and even though she knew nothing about the shadowhunters and their world she still threw herself into their problems and really cared about them.
I will definitely be continuing on with this series. Especially after the ending in this book, how could I not? It left me wondering what was going to happen next and I am excited to find out what adventures Jace, Clary and the group get into next. ...more
When I saw that this had been published, I knew right away that I would be buying it. If you know me at all you know that I am absolutely in love with the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series, and this novella is no different. The only problem I had with it is that I wish it had been longer!
The fact that it's told in Zuzana and Mik's points of view just make it even better. I love Zuzana, she's actually one of my favorite characters in the series and I love every chance we get to see her in the books. She's just so funny and strange and lovely that it's impossible not to love her. Mik is a definite bonus in this story. There's not too much about him in the series and I really hope that changes with the last book. It was great to really get to see his character, plus he plays the violin.
The novella was sweet and completely adorable. I loved the insecurities that they both had and the way they come together is really unique and had me smiling the whole time. If you're a fan of the series then you definitely need to check this story out. ...more
There's just something about this series that has me captured. Cassandra Clare's writing definitely drew me in from the first book and I'm glad to say it hasn't let go of me yet. There's just something about it that's completely magical yet has themes that any person can relate to.
What I really loved about this installment is that there is so much more action. Yet at the same time we also get to see the characters when they aren't fighting. We see relationships strengthen and even ones begin to form. I love the humor throughout this book, yet it's bittersweet because there are moments that tore my heart to shreds.
The biggest thing for me was getting to see more of characters that weren't really focused on too much in the first two books. Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood get a lot more time in this book and you really get to see them grow as characters and I loved every single minute of it. Magnus happens to be my favorite character and whenever there's a scene with him I'm usually laughing my butt off because he really brings a lightness to the heavy moments in the book.
If you haven't started this series yet what are you waiting for? It has action, huge plot twists and really sweet romance. I highly recommend this series it's quickly become one of my favorites and this book just may be my favorite in the series so far. ...more
If you saw my review of In Your Dreams earlier this year you will know that I really enjoyed the book and was super excited to read this one. I can honestly say that I loved this one even more than the first and am now anxiously awaiting the third book. The ending that this book left off on had me wishing the next book was out.
I found the plot to be even more exciting in this one and I thought that would be hard to accomplish after the ending of In Your Dreams. It happened though and this one completely exceeded my expectations. I also found the characters to be even more fleshed out in this installment.
I still loved Zip, she's still the same funny girl who we were introduced to in the previous book and she really is becoming one of my favorite characters. Kieran is still the same lovable guy, but this time he's dealing with issues that are effecting his happy disposition. Kayla is the character that really surprised me in this one. You never really find out too much about her in the first book but a lot of things are revealed about her in this one and you really start to feel for her. She's sarcastic and witty and completely protective of her older brother. The newest character Cooper is the one I actually didn't like. He may have had the same sleeping disorder as Kieran but he was the complete opposite. I found him to be annoying and egotistical and he just gave me some weird vibes. I can't wait to see where things lead to with him in the next book.
If you like stories that don't include the supernatural plots that a lot of YA books contain, then you should definitely check this one out. The characters are so real and relatable and the issues that they deal with really make you feel for them. Plus there aren't too many YA books out there that deal with sleeping disorders.
Amy Martin is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to see where she takes this story next and any other works she comes out with in the future.
This copy was received from the author for review purposes and did not effect my opinions in any way. The opinions expressed in this review were mine alone....more
