The idea of mysterious metal eating bugs in a dystopian southwestern setting intrigued me. However, the bugs were tertiary to the story line. This story incorporated a variety of themes that I felt were interestingly pulled together, but it felt like "grasshopper" from the old kung-fu t.v show meets interesting people along his journey in life and metal eating bugs just happen to be a part of the landscape. The story never really comes to terms with it's Sci-Fi Title.(less)

It never really delves into why the whole apocalyptic EMP destroying signal happened and how it changes only a certain age group (Children and youth) into cruel, gory, flesh eating maniacs. A good continuation of the first book 'Ashes', but it does drag on with no resolution and it really does feel like the characters are lost in a hopeless situation throughout the whole book and that's how it ends, hopeless. Great for readers who like scenes like scalpelling-out eyeballs from live people, beheadings, eating whole chunks of tatooed flesh, chewing fresh human tongues. There is an ever present non-zombie human survival element (the main character) but she just seems to get deeper and deeper into impossible situations. Another book? Definitely, but I might just read the last page of it.(less)

Nuclear reactors melt, people are instantly killed, planes and birds fall out of the sky, technology no longer functions and everything is ransacked. It's either kill or be killed. Told through the eyes of a young woman (terminal cancer patient) as she lives through the horror, gore and as a new member of a post-apocalyptic dysfunctional society. Book 1 of 2.(less)

Mystery, sci-fi (but not too "techie"), young romance, family betrayal, global warming, power politics, murder. Reminds me of the movie the 5th Element (setting)+ Romeo and Juliet (forbidden romance) + plus J.D. Robb mystery/thriller. Cliffhanger included :)(less)

Action packed, scenes of violence, keeps you reading to the very end.. prequel to The Maze Runner. (less)

The author I thought did a nice job of taking you right into the story. The reader is kept hanging on till almost the end of the book for an explanation of the drowned cities, though as a reader you can pretty much guess why, but it's nice to have it all come together. Mild inappropriate language, gory scenes and some violence.(less)

Very different from ship breaker, more of a war story still with the time elements from the first book. War violence, bloodshed and curse words. Action packed, physical and emotional survival. Author does a great job again of pulling the reader into the story with a very descriptive writing style for both the setting and the characters.(less)

Definitely in the dystopian genre though not in the sense of the world already destroyed but waiting until man ceases to exist. A little predictable and the end is not as dramatic as I expected. There is a brutal murder scene, and some dark themes.(less)
