But then again, i still remember that i had to finish my Hong Kong Dollar at the time, and i didn't want to finish it with food. So i decided to buy a book, which finally this book caught my attention (how can you resist a shiny yellowy book cover, full with its title and author?). I then found out that this book is the first book out of 3 (or even more?) of a series.
The girl with the dragon tattoo tells a story about a guy named Mikael Blomkvist who had to face a case with one of the biggest industries called Wennerstrom; somewhere in Sweden. Blomkvist, under the umbrella of Millenium, then got to the edge of bankruptcy due to the case. Then suddenly, an offer came to him, from another rich old-man named Henrik Vanger, who was desperately in need of finding the truth in regards to his niece; Hariett Vanger.
Hariett disappeared back in 1966, when there was an accident in the Hedeby island. Hariett was one of Henrik's goldens, that having her disappearing, got him mourning ever since. Moreover, there was a tradition that Harriet used to do for Henrik by sending him flowers; which recently happening. That of course drove Henrik 'insane' with the question: is she alive, or someone is trying to drive me crazy? The decision to hire Blomkvist was then made, with Millenium's financial health as its guarantee from Henrik's side.
Before hiring Blomkvist, Henrik's assistant, Dirch Frode, contacted Armansky to conduct a deep research on Blomkvist. A girl named Lisbeth Salander then was hired on behalf of Armansky. The skills she had, then bumped her into Blomkvist in the middle of his efforts in solving the case of Hariett Vanger.
I actually love the story; for me, it was brilliant. But i guess, it took me quite a while to grasp the sensation of the story, because it's started slow before the peak of the story. End of the story was not really appealing for me too. Because i thought that when the Hariett's case is closed, so does the book. Yet, the story over Wennerstrom lengthen the story and for me, it's no longer an excitement.
There are two possibilities: first: i'm the one who's not used to such kind of ending, which is actually ok for me for a change. The second one is the bridging between the end of Henrik Vanger's case and the Wennerstrom is not solid enough to keep the excitement in reading.
I actually in between three to four stars for this book. Because i have to admit that this book is actually great. It's just something that i think it's different from what i expected. But then again, it's just my two cents of thought.(less)

So, in some sense, buku ini juga menolong gue untuk men-scope salah satu studi gue (hahaha).
Iya, gue spare some of my money untuk tabungan gue, tapi gue nggak pernah berpikir lebih jauh tentang investasi.
Umumnya, buku non-fiksi ngebuat gue ngantuk. Tapi, ternyata buku ini nggak juga. Properly written lah.
Gue juga cukup suka dengan layoutnya, nggak terlalu ngeburem'in mata. Makanya, gue ngasih 4 bintang sama buku ini, karena basically, this book is good.
"Normal is using every means possible to show that, although you're just an ordinary human being, you're far above other mortals." [page 48]...more"Normal is using every means possible to show that, although you're just an ordinary human being, you're far above other mortals." [page 48]
One of the reasons why i bought this book is because i'm collecting Paulo Coelho's books. Because i think, it doesn't matter how many stars i would rank it, there are still several passages or lines that are worth to be remembered of. And i guess, this book contains the same too.
Another reason why i bought this book is because Coelho's 11 Minutes has amazed me. It was the first time i read Coelho's story in such a way, that i saw a different genre of book that Coelho's written. So i thought, The Winner Stands Alone would be the same. It is quite different with others, but still, i don't really enjoy it.
The Winner Stands Alone is about several people lives, in the arena of arts; be that movies, models, producers, that sorts of arts. Taking place in Cannes Movie Festival, this book brought the idea of compiling all background of lives into one scene. But the core idea, is a story of a guy named Igor, who would do anything just to catch the attention of his long lover Ewa, whose now is Hamid's. To kill people, is actually one way for him to get Ewa's attention.
Along with Igor's journey in getting Ewa's attention, there are several young actress or models wanna be, who had to surpass their worries, in order to get the attention of Hamid, the well-known producers, designers. Meeting lots of photographers who just want to have a model, who they would thought stupid enough to collect some money out of them, to those who are sincerely looking for seeds of models.
All of these characters meet in Cannes Movie Festival, with the essence of the story, a journey to find an everlasting love (thought to be).
Lots of confusions went around in my head, since the scenes were jumping here and there. And, to be honest, i don't think i like the ending. That's why i gave this book 2 stars.

What attracted me to this book is the fact that this book was short-listed for SEA Write Award in 2009. Its gloomy cover almost made me withdrew from the book, thought it would be a horror book or something. But when i read its back cover, i realize that it is not a horror book. So, practically, my mind was safe.
The Most Silent School in the World is a book that tells a story about the development of a school. Starting from 8 students, the school is basically growing to around 64 students.
I wasn't really understand its development processes, because in some points, it's just confusing me. But what i captured from its early stage of school, until the end of the book is about friendship. Can you imagine, from 8 people, you have tighter friendship ever. You trust someone, you're in love with the other. But then, when there are several people come in into your life, suddenly those friendship ends. There were people who don't like to be close with one of your best friends. There were people who were trying to pull you out from your comfort-zone. And that's how the school is growing. And somehow, the growing community can give you the opportunity to be more mature, to be able to handle things that previously you couldn't, to learn how to trust people (who are basically your friends), and try to stand still with your principles in life, embracing it tightly, and never giving it up.
But the book also shows you, no matter how big the community grows, you can still differ who is your friend, and who is not.
I love the words Fa is using (well, i read its english translation and it was nice). I love the book concept, to have only 2 pages per 'chapter' (if you can call it as chapter). I just don't like its cover; it's so gloomy.
It's quite difficult to understand, but it is a good book. Therefore, i can only give it 3 stars.(less)

Yet, several weeks ago, i was curious what's inside of it, so i bought it. It is truly about the art of parenting; but amazingly, i perceived the messages differently; it is about leadership.
Reading this book also reminded me of my late Mom, who passed when i was 13 years old (mmm... 3 days before my 13th birthday, actually). So, it was touching me indeed. The start of this book surely made me missing my Mom a lot (and of course, i cried; ha!).
This book shares Hannah Carol's experience in becoming a mother. Some part of the book also mentioned about her childhood, facts that she doesn't know her biological father until today were also presented. Also the moment when she grew up with her grandfather, and how mislead information could affect you deeply and made you act differently than you should.
Hannah also brought the idea of becoming a friend to her children, instead of becoming someone with 'authorities' who shouldn't be argued even when she's wrong. She applies the idea of involving her children in deciding something. I was amazed with her concept in growing children. She is actually discussing the best way to punish her children with her children themselves; and made an agreement regarding to that.
She also presents several insights about being a good father to children. How a father should 'create' such an image, that when their children grew up, they would like to be like their dad, or having someone like their dad to be their spouse.
I don't think i've chosen the wrong book though. I was thinking that reading this book for me is actually the best time, since i know that i have to be ready leader one day. Her concept of parenting, i concluded, can be practiced in leadership.
I like the book because each chapter only consists of 2 pages in average (a very honest opinion). It was written beautifully with its proper chosen words, leaving several space so it won't fill our views about a page.
I like this book.
I know there's the second one (which i already have it), and i truly hope her second book could make me give 5 stars.

Saya suka gaya bahasanya yang sederhana (it took me in total of 7 hours to read it, can you imagine how light this book is?), 'nampol', dan saya suka kejujuran yang ada di dalamnya.
What is actually our strength?
Dengan gaya bahasa yang sangat ringan, semi informal (nah?), Ricky is basically trying to guide his readers, motivate his readers untuk mengetahui kekuatan masing-masing.
It's a simple question, yet when you answer it, it has powerful effect for your life. Your life will never be the same again.
Thanks, Ricky!

He didn't really say what kind of book this was, yet, i was curious, so i bought it in one terminals in this world, while i was in transit.
The White Tiger tells a story of 'former' driver, who was a witness to his master's life. His master's struggles in pursuing his business, his master's marriage life, his master's old girlfriend, his master's brother, his master's up and down, his master's kindness, and his master's 'politics' against himself; at least that was what Balram tried to figure out from his master.
Balram acknowledged himself as a driver, a murderer, an entrepreneur, a thinking man, even a man who sees tomorrow. As a driver, he had a great master who appreciated his work, understood his struggles (from his master's point of view, of course), yet, it was not enough for Balram to keep his master from living. Balram was fed by the life of his master that to some point he against of, his friends' influence, a-must-read-magazine about 'murdering', and several other thoughts in his minds. His experience led him to be one entrepreneur who fought for his life, to live a descent life like what everybody's dreaming of. When he finally succeeded, he adopted his master's ways of making things through, better it be good or in default, nasty ways.
This book affected me in several ways:
1. A driver is the one who knows how is exactly our life that we're living for (made me think of my driver, actually...)
2. Our decisions in life most likely will be affected by some external factors; books you read, friends you're hanging out with, daily life issues (your professional matters), any kind of things that get in to you.
Great book indeed.
"But isn't it likely that everyone who counts in this world, including our prime minister (including you, Mr. Jiabao), has killed someone or other on their way to the top?... but that is glory, and not what I am after. All i wanted was the chance to be a man - and for that, one murder was enough." (page 274)(less)

It is actually a good book, yet it took me quite sometime to finish it. Probably because i don't really like non-fictions. This book elaborates the steps on how to generate your faith and also how to use it.
While reading this book, i sort of read it like i'm reading a textbook. It's very organized, just like a textbook. I don't really think i'm a fond of it, but this book is actually good.
One of my favorite quotes in this book is: "We wear so many different masks in our attempt to be acceptable that we lose sight of who we are, or else never even know." (page 130)
Following the above sentence, he then elaborates the story of David who knew himself as a whole, that he's able to face Goliath even without an armor.

He delivered an interesting message on how we should have made ourselves to be inconvenienced by others; whether they would spend your time longer than it should, or would stop you on your way to a heavily important matters, and things related. The objective of doing this thing is to help people to ease their life. By doing that kind of thing, we surely would have a better feeling to move on.
The book is quite thin, and i love the way Paul Scanlon wrote it; it's so easy to read. He also put several stories as examples on what would the 15th revolution would impact others. Lots of people felt so loved that they understood that life is about others too.
For a person who has limited English, i can assure you that this book would help us to understand the meaning of true giving.(less)

It's such a great book.
Inspiring.
Kenapa cuman kasih 4 bintang? Menurut gue sih, karena bukunya kurang tebel, jadi isinya kurang banyak :D fun banget baca bukunya, that you don't want the book to be finished :P(less)

Norwegian Wood is a story about a man, whose life is pondering on one girl. She's actually his best friend's girlfriend who hung himself couple of years beforeward. After his death, Naoko then had sex with Toru. Apparently Naoko enjoyed the sex with Toru rather than her ex.
Not long after that, Naoko moved to other place; isolating herself, claiming her to be ill. For several months, Toru has not meeting up with her, because it's her will. During those times, Toru look for other girls, just to have fun.
Then one day, Toru met another girl, and at the same time Naoko called Toru and asked him to visit her. Having two choices, Toru was in dilemma. But then, he found himself alone again, empty and clueless, though at that time, he already set up his choice. A pity, huh?
I have read it quite a long time ago, so i don't really remember what kind of things that i understand from this book. But Murakami, always have his own quotes that would take you to other station in life, just to ponder on your life. (less)

Just like its little, Paul: A Novel, tells us about the life of Paul in such a different way. Started from the first time he appeared in the bible as someone who loves to torture Christian, until his very last days in life. All the troubles he bored and stuffs, and how i see that he's actually a stubborn. Many times i read that he's highly emotional, yet, how God used him was tremendously effective.
I also read about how he became someone lovable by other people. How people would stand for him, especially due to his extreme decisions, his statements and stuffs, that basically against those the average. How he pursued Christianity in such a way, that he would fight for those non-Jewish to be Jesus' disciples.
I also read about Prisca, such a noble woman, who's willing to replace Paul's in prison. I got many things from this book; though i have to admit that it took longer than i used to when i'm reading a book. But eventually, i finished it.
It's a good book. Especially for those who are afraid to go against the common.(less)

Tapi, setelah selesai membaca buku ini, gue jadi bingung sendiri. Setidaknya, selesai gue membaca buku ini, gue nggak se-excited ketika gue selesai membaca ringkasan ceritanya. But yah, setidaknya, gue udah membaca buku ini sih.
Well anyway, gue suka beberapa quote-quote yang dituliskan. Terutama mengenai kesederhanaan berpikir manusia. Cuman, jujur aja, gue kurang suka endingnya.

It's always been you'. You know, what, sekarang gue ngerti kenapa amplopnya berwarna biru :D After reading it, you guys will understand why :)
But, gue personally, kinda like it; karena lucu.
Untungnya emang, porsi prom itu nggak terlalu banyak; jadi yah... so so lah.

Perahu Kertas bercerita mengenai kehidupan beberapa gelintir orang Indonesia, di umur mereka yang masih muda, dalam menjalani hidup, memilih jalan hidup, berlari dari kenyataan (face it, we all have these kind of moments, right?), bermimpi dan banyak lagi realitas lainnya.
Rasanya nggak adil kalo' gue cerita'in detailnya seperti apa; intinya cuman satu, tapi liku-likunya yang luar biasa menyenangkan.
Tapi, i will leave all opinions to you guys; yang jelas, gue suka banget dengan buku ini.
*yes, gue nggak baca bagian setelah EPILOG-nya* Great book, i must say :)
