I loved the plot twist with Marlee, I had my suspicions but I never grasped the consequences until I read The Elite and, like America, I was incensed. The way Maxon handled the aftermath redeemed him in my mind, but I'm still not counting Aspen out. We also got to see more of the background behind the rebels and what they are most likely looking for, and America plucked up the courage to propose restructuring the caste system of Illea, with mixed reactions on all levels. There was a lot of development in this novel, but I'm looking forward to the next book, The One, to see some solid decision-making and hopefully see some changes to the system!(less)

She and her Cepan, Katarina, live a quiet life in several places where they concentrate on Six's training. After responding to a blog post by one of the Garde, who we assume was Number Two, they are forced to go on the run with the Mogadorians hot on their trail. The Mogs eventually catch up to them and take them prisoner to a base in a mountain, where they torture Katarina in order to get Six to talk. Six finally lies to them and says she is Number Eight to spare Katarina further torture. They kill Katarina and attempt to kill Six in numerous ways. After each attempt ends with the deaths of the Mogadorians inflicting the attempt, Six is thrown in a cell until they are able to kill her at a later date. Six begins to develop her Legacies, one of which is the power of invisibility, which she masters and uses to escape the compound and go on a search for the rest of the Garde. John is the first one she finds.
I loved this novella, as it gave me a greater understanding of Six and her past. Watching her Cepan be tortured could have broke her, but Six remained strong and continued to keep her body in shape while she was stuck in her cell for several months. She kept her faith and it's obvious she will be a great contender against the Mogs.(less)

For many years he and his Cepan, Sandor, lived on the run and constantly moving. Eventually, they decide to hide in plain sight and they purchase an expensive penthouse suite in urban Chicago, where they have lived for several years now. They spend their time training and waiting for Nine's legacies to develop. One day while Nine is out for a run, a Mogadorian spots him and follows him back to Nine's apartment, where Nine kills him. Sandor decides to take their training to the next level after the kill, and also encourages Nine to go to a local recreation center to train further and eliminate his cabin fever. Nine meets a girl named Maddy at the rec center and develops a crush on her, and eventually they begin to date. They get ambushed by Mogadorians on their second date, but manage to escape. Sandor wants to leave after this incident but Nine refuses, and ends up running away and develops the legacy of anti-gravity. He runs away to Maddy's house and gets ambushed by the Mogs again, and this time they take him prisoner. He learns that Maddy has been helping the Mogadorians the whole time by visiting different rec centers to locate him. The Mogs took her parents prisoner, and she agreed to exchange Nine for the release of her parents. However, once at the base the Mogs kill both Maddy and her parents. Nine is held prisoner for several months before the Mogs capture Sandor. They torture Sandor for several days in front of Nine before Nine is able to break through their defenses and kill Sandor out of mercy. Nine is then thrown back in his cell for several more months until John and Sam arrive at the base and releases him.
I loved learning more about Nine, but he definitely had a heartbreaking story. He finally ventures out into the human social world and meets a girl that he likes, only to find out she deceived him. He got captured by the Mogs and lost his Cepan over a girl, and the whole time he was imprisoned by the Mogs he was beating himself up over it. He has his eye on revenge and he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to seeing what happens with Nine in the future.(less)

They spend their time training and healing after the battle in Paradise. After a few close calls with the Mogs and the police, John finally opens up his Chest and reads the letter from Henri. They learn that Sam's dad helped the Loric when they first got to Earth and it is assumed that the Mogs have kidnapped him. They believe that Sam's father may have a tracking device back in Paradise that will help lead them to the other Garde, so they return to Ohio. They get ambushed by Mogs and John's chest is stolen, and John and Sam get captured by the police when John attempts to see Sarah. Six eventually busts them out of prison and they decide to split up. John and Sam head to the Mogadorian base in West Virginia to retrieve the Chest, and Six heads for Spain to answer a distress call from one of the Garde. John and Sam make it into the base and finds John's Chest as well as one other, which belongs to Number Nine who has been held captive for over a year. John and Nine escape with their Chests, but Sam is left behind because he is busy searching for his father in the other cells. Meanwhile, in Spain Six goes to the rescue of Number Seven named Marina, who has spent most of her time on Earth at an orphanage with her Cepan, Adelina. Adelina has long since lost faith in their mission and has not prepared or trained Marina in any way. Marina has developed several legacies, including the ability to breathe underwater, see in the dark, and heal the sick or injured. The Mogadorians have found her and battle ensues, during which Adelina dies. Marina is helped by Six as well as Number Ten and her Cepan, who unknowingly came on a second ship to Earth. They defeat the Mogs and now plan on finding the remaining members of the Garde before meeting back up with John and Sam. This was an excellent followup to I Am Number Four. It was exciting to learn about more members of the Garde, even though we really only got to know Number Seven in depth. However, we now have five members of the remaining Garde accounted for, which leaves Numbers Five and Eight mysteries to us. I'm excited to learn more about Nine and Ten and I'm hoping they track down the remaining Garde and save Sam as well.

Six is now with Marina, Ella, and Crayton, and they go on a search for Number Eight, who Crayton has heard several rumors of. They find him in India and recognize that he is incredibly powerful, with legacies of teleportation and shape shifting. They five of them decide it is time to get to America to meet up with John. Eight tells them that he knows of a way that they can get to New Mexico within hours, through the use of an ancient Loric teleportation site that he discovered. When they get to the site they are ambushed by Mogadorians, during which Crayton is killed. They escape by teleporting; however, Eight, Marina, and Ella end up separated from Six, who teleports to New Mexico. She almost dies in the desert and is taken hostage by the U.S. government, who have been working with the Mogadorians. The other three have to teleport several more times before they end up in New Mexico. During this time Ella develops the legacy of telepathy. Ella hears from Six and realizes that she is in danger. They set off to find the U.S. government base to rescue Six. Meanwhile, John and Nine have been recovering from the battle at the Mogadorian base in West Virginia. At one point they are captured by U.S. government agents, and they learn that the government has Sarah. They escape easily, and they end up going to Nine's penthouse in Chicago. They are able to charge the tablet that John took from Sam's father's hideout, and realize it shows where the other Garde members are on Earth. Additionally, they see two other different colored dots, which they assume represent their ships, one of which is in New Mexico. Eventually they see one Garde member arrive in New Mexico, and Nine and John both have visions that tell them to go there. They pack up a car with supplies and they head towards New Mexico. Once they get there they meet up with Eight, Marina, and Ella, and they enter the base to search for Six. During this time, Six has been attempting to fight Setrakus Ra, the leader of the Mogadorians. However, he is able to take away her legacies and eventually overtakes her. She is turned to stone and unable to move, and Setrakus shape shifts into Six in order to trick the remaining Garde. The Garde shows up, along with Sarah who they found in a room on the way. They believe Setrakus is really Six, and when Eight goes over to give her a hug, he is impaled by the sword Six is holding. Six morphs back into Setrakus Ra, and battle ensues. Setrakus once again takes away their legacies, leaving the Garde almost defenseless and Marina unable to heal Eight. Ella eventually breaks whatever spell Setrakus uses to take away their legacies. Marina heals Eight, Six breaks out of her stone cage, Four discovers he also has the healing legacy when he has to heal Sarah and Ella, and Nine has been holding off Setrakus Ra by himself. Setrakus eventually disappears, and the Garde decide they need to escape from the base and train more before they attempt to take on Setrakus Ra again, as well as finding the remaining Garde member Number Five.
I loved this novel, as there was a lot of action and a lot of very scary moments. I was on the edge of my seat several times, worried about the possible deaths of all the Garde members at various times. I'm happy they found Eight, as he seems very powerful and has a sense of humor. I can definitely see Eight and Marina being together in the future. I was very scared for Six, as she was not able to harm Setrakus Ra in any way during her fight, and I was sure she was a goner. In a way, it was good that the Garde took on Setrakus Ra unsuccessfully and did not sustain any casualties. I feel as though they were all very full of themselves and weren't anticipating having any trouble bringing Setrakus Ra down. Now they know what they're up against, what kind of powers he has, and they can train together. All they need now is to find Number Five.(less)

Only 9 children and their keepers, called Cepan, escaped the planet during the raid. These children will develop powers once they get older which will allow them to fight the Mogadorians and hopefully bring Lorien back to it's previous glory. The children (the Garde) and their Cepans make it to Earth and scatter, and the Mogadorians have been hunting them down ever since. However, the Garde has a charm placed on them and have been assigned numbers, so the children can only be killed in the order of their numbers starting with Number One. When a Garde member has been killed, a scar appears on the remaining Garde's legs. The first three have been killed by the Mogadorians, and this novel follows the story of Number Four, the next in line. John is a teenager who constantly moves with his Cepan, Henri, and they now live in Paradise, Ohio. John finally has a best friend, Sam, and a girlfriend, Sarah, and struggles with the desire to want a normal life rather than constantly running from and fearing the Mogadorians. John's legacies finally start to develop, and John starts training to master them. The Mogadorians find John at the end of the novel and a battle ensues, which results in Henri's death. Number Six also finds them and helps fight the Mogadorians, and after their victory John, Sam, and Six are forced to go on the run.
I actually watched the movie first, and later realized it was based off the book. I picked it up right away and fell in love with the series. I found myself waiting eagerly to see what kind of Legacies John develops, and I sympathize with him for wanting a normal life to be with Sarah. I was heartbroken when Henri dies, but the one good thing that came of the battle with the Mogadorians was the appearance of Six, who is an incredible fighter with amazing legacies. John can learn a lot from her and I can't wait to learn about the rest of the Garde. (less)

Number One was discovered because a picture of her Loric scar made it into the police database after she was arrested for stealing. She and her Cepan, Hilde, jump on a plane to Malaysia right away, but the Mogadorians catch up to them and kill them both. The Mogs bring One's body back to one of their bases, where they developed a machine that will alow the Mogs to access her memories. Adamus, the son of an esteemed Mogadorian general, is chosen to access her memories. The machine works, although One is present in spirit and controls which memories Adamus sees. Adamus starts to feel sympathy for One and his allegiance begins to sway. He decides that when he awakens, he will not tell his father anything that he has seen. When he awakes, he finds that he has been in One's memories for three years. At this time, the Mogs have a lead on Number Two in London, and he is brought along on the strike force. He does not accompany the team to the fight against Two's Cepan, during which he discovers a blog post written by Two. He pinpoints her location and heads for her apartment right away. He tries to convince her to pack and escape, but before she agrees the other Mogs show up. Adam is given a chance to kill Two, but he is unable to. His adoptive brother, Ivan, kills her himself. Over the next two years, Adam works hard to make himself seem like a devout Mogadorian, during which One still accompanies him in his thoughts. They try to plan out how they will help the other Garde members. An opportunity comes about when the Mogs get a lead on Number Three in Kenya. Adamus and Ivan are chosen to go undercover in Kenya and get positive confirmation that the boy is a Garde member. They see the boy, named Hannu, and realize that he is indeed one of the Loric. Ivan places a call to the General to bring in the strike team. Adamus and One realize they have to warn Hannu so he can escape. Adamus sneaks out that very night to find Hannu, only to realize that Ivan has been following the whole time. Ivan realizes that Adamus is defecting and tries to kill him. During the scuffle, the Mogadorians arrive and kill Hannu's Cepan. Hannu makes a break for it, but is captured and killed by the General himself. Ivan pushes Adamus off a cliff, and he is now hovering between life and death with One begging him to wake up.
I was very surprised to find that this novella is from the perspective of one of the Mogadorians. It was encouraging to see that at least one of the Mogs has a heart and a conscience, and he realizes that the Mogs simply destroy everything and there is no glory in what they do. The Loric are very lucky that Adamus was the one to access One's memories and that he had no desire to give his people any information about the Garde. Unfortunately, he was unable to help Two and Three, but Adamus is very smart and hopefully he will continue to try and help the remaining Garde members.(less)
