The author made me want to know more about Persia and the beauty of that region. However, I think she WAY over-used the whole "saffron" thing. Everything was saffron and it got a little annoying after a while. The story was very slow and I thought it was missing a lot of detail; it was difficult for me to want to finish. Overall, I think this story really wasn't all that interesting once I got past the height of the story. (less)

I definitely liked the story - it was interesting as historical fiction. There were quite a few "F-Bombs" and some mild intimacy parts - definitely wouldn't recommend this to someone who tries to steer clear of that stuff.
What I did like: the interesting history of Russia's uprisings and class warfare. It was definitely a rough time to be a Russian peasant, and eventually it became deadly to be an aristocrat. The rich were very rich, while the poor were starving, having to work factory jobs that were unsafe and low-paying. Who can blame a people for getting angry at watching the wealthy people parade their money around while their children starved in unsuitable housing?
What I didn't like: The plot was a bit weak at times. Though it was interesting and sometimes riveting, the story was mostly weak.(less)

I'm finally done with this series and I will admit that I have been pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this 3-book saga! There was intrigue, adventure, romance, and I stayed very entertained. I was, however, disappointed in a couple of turns at the end of this book, though, especially since the target audience is young girls. However, I enjoyed my time getting lost in the story.
*SPOILER**
It really, really aggravated me that the author peppered the end of the story with lesbianism. It didn't overtake the story itself, and nothing crude was mentioned, but it involved two of the main characters and I'm so outraged that our world today is so accepting of this behavior and it frustrated me that Libba Bray added it to her otherwise wholesome story. Young girls are the target audience here and it bothers me that homosexuality is being thrown at us at every turn.

I actually LISTENED to the book instead of physically reading it, and I think I could have understood more of the story if I had actually had the book in hand to go back and refer to. I had to read other reviews on the book to completely understand the story and now everything makes so much sense to me.
I wouldn't say that I LOVED the book, but I really enjoyed it to the end. It's definitely worth picking up.(less)

I had more than one friend refer this book to me and I have to say how utterly bored I was with it! It's an okay story that I felt was a bit cliche. I understand that an underlying theme of the book was shadows, but this author used the word so often in his descriptions of everything that if I heard the word 'shadow' one more time, I thought I would bash my head into a wall!
To me, the book was an utter bore. The tragedy was interesting, but overall, I found myself struggling to get through it.(less)

Although the ending was a little predictable, I was enthralled with the story, the vivid characters, and the beautiful landscape painted in my mind. The mountain folks back in the 30's and 40's, and probably even today, struggled considerably and this story makes a person think about what self-sufficiency and productivity really means. It takes a lot to stir up my emotions in any kind of story but the hardships of the two children in this book had me in tears once or twice. It's kind of a slow read, but worthwhile nonetheless.(less)

So much about the story and scenery were things that I could recognize from legends and history lessons we studied in school, and from stories from my own ancestors. I know the areas and territories written about in this book, I grew up going on field trips to old forts and Indian camps, walked through the Dragoons where Geronimo hid, my ancestors settled in a small valley not far from Tucson, and so everything about this story hit a nerve with me. The hard living these people had to endure for the sake of making a life and future for themselves is incomprehensible. I realize that most of this book is fiction, however, it might as well all be fact because you have to know that someone somewhere experienced some or all of these things.
I couldn't put this book down for two solid days! It's a must-read for everybody - even if it's just to get a taste of what the real "Old West" was really like - and how women survived by being very strong.(less)
