I couldn't put it down, even though the story is very 'basic' compared to French's other novels: Detective Mackey, now well into his forties, moved out of his family's house at nineteen and has never looked back, having been abandoned by his girlfriend Rosie, with whom he had agreed to run away. Now, he gets a call that Rosie's body has been found... and it seems like she didn't plan to abandon him at all. Mackey returns to his family and his roots, to figure out what happened.
As always, the story isn't about the crime alone: it's about the detective involved, his feelings, his past, his present. I was really interested in Mackey and his background, which is what kept me reading! (less)
I really liked the first 4/5th of the book... but the ending... I'm not going to write any spoilers but I disliked it a lot.

Each has its own world, explaining short or long. I gladly compare this collection to the likes of Neil Gaiman. (less)

I really enjoyed both girls' stories, but then they met eachother... Still an interesting read though. (less)

Especially the way in which the voices of Minny and Aibileen are written, that bothered me. The plotline of 'white woman helps black woman', a little too.
Anyway, since I am not an expert on racism or a POC, i'll refrain from further comment.
The book read easily and the story was interesting. I learned lots about a timeperiod and culture I knew nothing about, something I can always appreciate. It was fluently written and I kept wanting to read on, always a good sign. (less)
