I thought Smith dealt with the subject matter of race and religion very well here. One thing which really made these issues stick out was her characterization. Another thing I really liked about this book was how Smith leaves the reader questioning the roles of science and fate in our lives. This book made me laugh but also made me contemplate....more

It's about a family who is losing their wealth and needs to sell their cherry orchard, and I thought that was much more relatable than the story of Ivanov.
The one thing that I really enjoyed about this play was the sense of memory that I got while I was reading it. I think Chekhov did a good job of showing why this place was important to the family. I got a sense that there was a lot of sorrow about losing the orchard, but in some ways he very much incorporated the hope for the future which I enjoyed. Overall I'd say it's a really good story about family and we hold certain places dear to us. My only complaint is that at times the names got a bit confusing....more

Although it's a sad sotry, I think it's one of great significance, particularly considering the time when it was written. I read it for class and our professor had us read some short articles on psychology, particularly relating to happiness, and I think both of those are very important themes here. I think it's a play that is still important today in terms of what it says about marriage.
I thought the writing and the characterization was very good and that the length was appropriate. The ending was very fitting....more

It's definitely a challenging readI thought this play was good and presented readers with interesting questions to contemplate, but I didn't love it. It's definitely a challenging read in that it forces to readers contemplate if we're simply filling time before we die and if all we ever do is put meaning on things. I think this is a difficult question because who really wants to think that their life is that insignificant, and who likes wondering why they're even alive?
At any rate, I found the play humorous, but I feel like it will be even more funny to see it in person. I think it's hard to get the pace of the witty banter just reading it. In about two weeks, I'm seeing a performance of it with Ian McKellan an Patrick Stewart, which I'm very excited for!
EDIT: After seeing this play, I feel the need to upgrade my rating to 4 stars. I enjoyed it seeing it a good deal more than reading it. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan were brilliant and just like an old married couple. Seeing it really helped me to appreciate the paly so much more....more

The concept of people constantly mixing up two twins and this wreaking lots of havoc may not be the most advanced ever, but Shakespeare plays it out really well here.
This play lives up to its status in the comedy of category. I found the humor very situational, and at times couldn't help but laugh at the irony of the characters' circumstances.
I also thought that the characterization was quite well done here. The reader actually does get a fair amount of insight into Adriana's marriage with Antipholus of Ephesus and her feelings. I felt that I also got good insight into why things were happening because Shakespeare partially develops these charactesr by talking about the problems (and their anxieties regarding them) which they need to eliminate to avoid being arrested.
I also thought this play was a quick read over all. I thought that the characters kept the reader engaged, as did the plot. It left me wanting to know what happened. Even if this play is a comedy, I think there's lots of other good reasons to enjoy it!...more

I realizeI can only give this play three stars because I didn't particularly care for the actual play itself and thought it was rather mysogynistic. I realize that this is part of the point of the play, but I just found it to be an agonizing read. I think it is okay to understand an author or playwright's point but still dislike it or not appreciate the way it is carried out.
However, I am interested in the academic discussions surrounding it such as what is taming and what is teaching and how this soicalizes and civilizes us etc. It's an interesting play to discuss, but I'm not a fan of the actual content....more

I'd read it once before in high school, but I think a reread of abook always helps someone to give a more definite review on what they thought of something and I had to read it for class. I really like Joyce's prose and style here, although I've heard it's quite different in Ulysses.
This is a really good book to study in a college class, because then you will learn more about the narrative structure and the progression of the stories as a whole. It adds a lot to one's understanding of the stories. Some of the stories are more allegorical about Irish history, and I can't honestly say that those were my favorite out of the collection.
I'm actually thinking of writing on essay about women and the city in Dubliners, but we'll see how that works out. At any rate I think my reading of this book will become further enhnaced by my visit to Dublin.
**EDIT** I did wind up writing the paper, and it turned out really well. If you want to know more about it, ask me :)...more

I thought it was interesting that it was written from the male perspective by a female author, and I really enjoyed the sections that gave background on the characters before the war. I read this for a class and will now plan on reading two Pat Barker's otehr books, as this is apparently the third novel in her Regeneration trilogy....more
