It didn't have much action in it or suspense which didn't make it as fun and exciting to read. Also, it had a very low amount of segregation involved in it than I had expected. There were only very few situations where there was any real segregation involved. Other than that I thought it was a pretty decent book.
Basically, this book is about a 15-year-old boy named Rob Garrett who lives in Virginia. He is new to a boarding school in Connecticut called Draper. He is the first and only colored boy ever in the whole school and he is proud of himself because he thinks he can make history. Anyways, this book talks about the major things that happen throughout his school year at Draper. Also, He spends his thanksgiving break in Harlem, NY with his cousin Gwen who's an adult. In Harlem, his friend Gordie is also there and Rob spends a night with Gordie and the two go to a nightclub called Jinxie's. On their way back,at about 10:30 in the night, they meet Malcolm X and with him, his driver in a limousine, Tyrone, also Gordie's dad's worker. Then, Rob goes back to Cousin Gwen's house and soon, he leaves Harlem and heads back for Draper. Then later, for Christmas vacation, he goes to Virginia, back to his hometown to meet his parents and cousins and friends. He also meets his cousin, Paulette, and they both start liking each other. Also, his friends start meeting and planning sit-ins in a restaraunt near them in Virginia. Later, he goes back to Draper and as he is thinking more about Paulette and the sit-ins, he is less focused on school and starts getting lower grades and is worried about getting the honor roll again. Later, he does and His teachers give him a weekend furlough and so with thhat he visits Virginia again for a weekend. In the visit, Rob and many of his friends and even Rob's dad and Paulette's dad, go to a Woolworth's restaraunt and perform protesting sit-ins for black rights and the sit-in becomes very violent on the third day where the leader, Joseph, gets extremely injured and some others and they visit the hospital. That's the worst the segregation gets in the story. Then, he goes back to Draper to find out that his former best friend, Vinnie, who was bullied so much at Draper, was going to drop out. Rob felt sorry for him and as his dad arrived in a limousine, Rob helped carry his stuff for the move and Vinnie's dad wanted Rob to meet someone as a thanks for being a good friend to Vinnie. Then, out of the limousine comes... Joe Louis, Rob's all-time favorite hero! With that, he goes back to Draper into his room and the story ends....more

It wasn't the best book I've ever read but it was definetely on my top 15 list of favorites. It was very detailed and did a great job of explaining the character's thoughts and had a very deep explanation on every page. It left me there hungry for more. Also, what was very interesting about this book was that each chapter was told by a different person's perspective (first person each time). That's partly why the story was so detailed. The main character in the story was Cap Anderson. Some other main characters were Rain, his grandmother, Sophie Donnelley,a pretty high-schooler that hated Cap, Zach Powers, a bully at Cap's school, Naomi, a girl in Cap's school who first hated him and then appreciated him later on, Hugh Winkleman, the biggest nerd and loser in the school until Cap moved, and Cap's teacher; Mr.Kasigi.
Anyways, this story is about Cap who first lived in a farm in a place called Garland which his grandmother, Rain owned. Well, one day, while Rain was climbing a tree, she fell down and injured her foot severely. She was taken to the hospital which left Cap by himself. So he was taken to a near relative, a friend of Rain: Mrs. Donnelley and she took care of him and let him live in her house. Her daughter Sophie hated Cap for his hideous hippy look, long hair, and tie-dyed shirt. Also, he went to a school by the name of Claverage Middle School which became known as C Average middle school (if you get rid of the L) and he was the biggest social outcast in the school. He was worst than Hugh Winkleman! So people hated him and did all the horrible stuff to him they possibly could. They even elected him eigth-grade president which is a horrible position since the students just elect the biggest loser to be in that position which was now Cap. He was also the target for spitballs, wedgies, etc. He had to make hard decisions and he didn't even know any of the student's names and there were 1100 students altogether! He had a tough job and at the same time, he was trying to fit in to the rest of society wondering about all the differences compared to the life in Garland. So, there was a school dance coming up and he was supposed to plan for that and he got many checks signed by the teacher and he gave it all to charity and even gave $1,000 to Naomi which made her love Cap and then, soon enough, every one started to actually appreciate all the great things that Cap does and actually like him. Like near the beginning of the story, Cap's bus driver fainted and Cap took over and started driving the bus and he knew how to since he drove a pickup truck back at garland and he didn't even know there was such ting as a driver's license. That's when Cap's popularity all started. Also, Cap quickly starts learning all the students' names and lists them and eventually learns all their names in the end. Cap practically wasted the school's money and didn't uderstand that checks have to support sufficient funds in a bank account in fact, from Rain, Cap had learned to hate money because it was what created all the bad in the world and alll everyone cared about in the real world was money! He's been facing many problems in school and even at "home" with Sophie hating him. Another thing about Sophie is that she's 16 and she doesn't have a driver's license yet so she w2as so eager for driving lessons from her father but he was too busy and couldn't give any. Also, him and Sohie watch a show together called: "trigonometry and tears" and since Cap never watched TV before in his life, he didn't understand the fact that the characters couldn't be advised or even hear his voice. Along the way, students have begun to follow Cap in everything he does like: Tai Chi, meditation, etc. Everyone seemed to like Cap except 2 people: Hugh Winkleman and Zach Powers. Hugh was Cap's first friend but now feels betrayed when people like Cap and think he was the best 8th grade president ever and makes more, better friends. Zach thinks he's been replaced in the "cool kids" group with Cap since he sat at Zach's seat at lunch and Zach is just hungry for revenge! So both of them become allies against Cap and plot horrible things along the way. Later on, there's a football game and one player named Darryl, also Zach's friend, accidentally tackled Cap leading into a huge group of kids tackling Cap and he becomes injured. Three hours later, Zach and Darryl got in a fight and Darryl aimed a punch on Zach and Cap, with an attempt to make peace, got punched extremely hard in the nose! His nose was bleeding rapidly and he was taken to the hospital! Darryl was no enemy, they were both 2 accidents but the students all start to hate him nut they all know that Zach was the real enemy of Cap's and he was from the beginning. Later, Rain had recovered and Cap went back to Garland with Rain and the students noticed three days after that his injury wasn't the cause of his lengthy absence. So they wondered what happened and came to the conclusuion that Cap was probably dead. Cap was so happy when he moved back to Garland but at the same time, he missed his school, and his friends, and Sophie, and everyone. So he complained to Rain but Rain said there was no way back. Also, he realized that Garland was no longer there. So he asked Rain and she said that she sold it for $17 million! Cap was surprised with excitement and sadness at the same time. But they were rich. And he found Rain driving a Mercedes! Finally, one day, while Cap was out walking for an errand, he was in the middle of the road, there was a car and the driver happened to be Sophie! Finally, she got her driver's license! She now liked Cap and really felt sorry for being really mean to him since he left. So she told to come in the car. So he did, and they went to the Halloween dance in his school since it happened to be that same day! Cap wore a Mickey Mouse mask and Sophie wore a Minnie Mouse mask as costumes, which Cap didn't really understand at first. Anyways, they arrived and saw that all the students were there dressed up as hippies, dressed up as Cap! They were celebrating his memorial because they thought he was dead. It happened to be in the school parking lot. Later, he showed up and they were so happy!!! Everyone hugged their 8th grade president, their hero glad that he was actuallty alive! Then, Cap said goob bye to all the students remembering all their names without hesitating. Later, Cap was happy to hear from Rain that he was permanently moving into Sophie's house and so was Sophie and the whole school. And Cap was the coolest, most popular kid in his school and he was happy to live in real society. THE END["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

This book is now from the perspective of Coop as Swim The Fly was from Matt's perspective and since Coop is the funniest from the three, it's funnier to sense his point of view. Basically, this book iS about Coop having only one goal: to gain social status in his sophomore year so he can be popular. But he fails at doing so in the beginning as he is paired up with the least popular girl in the whole school, Helen, for a Health project about abstinence, safe sex, and STD's. Everyone laughs at him now and cracks jokes on him. Sometimes even his own friends, Matt and Sean. He is always trying to avoid Helen as much as possible, even in Health class. Now, Coop has to try to gain his former social ststus back rather than to try to become popular. He has an idea of how to gain back his popularity. He enters the school's "battle of the bands" with his unvolunteering friends Matt and Sean. He just plagiarizes a song from an unknown Canadian band with the help of his dad and when Matt and Sean hear the announcement of the contestants, they are furious! They didn't want to be in his band because they played in a band before and they were all horrible they thought that this will humiliate not just Coop, but all three now. The band is called: Arnold Murphy's bologna dare. After much convincing, Matt and Sean finally approve of participating in the band with Coop and finally are happy about helping out their friend to regain his social status. In the middle, the three go through many challenges with the Battle of the bands. In the end of the book, they lose the Battle of the bands but they are still popular in school and people still like them and Coop gets an A on his year-long health project. ...more
