This lead singer from tThis bio was a tough read, and I don't mean "tough" like it was so bad it was tough read to get over with, but it was intense. This lead singer from the 70s band "The Runaways" has lead quite a life. She is very matter-of-fact about her past lives (and I say lives - plural- become it seems that she has gone through so much!). This attitude towards her past can make it difficult for a reader to sympathize or even empathize with her. However, I still found myself pitying her (even if she didn't feel that way herself). I will warn readers that some of her stories are hard to stomach and I especially warn readers who are taking this book on to get emotionally prepared for "The Green Limousine" chapter! (PS If you saw the movie with the same name that is supposedly about the same people - it is not like the book at all!)...more

How can you go through life without knowing about Scout, Jem, Atticus, Boo Radley and of course, poor Tom Robinson. This book is good on so many levels. It is a great story at its base, but when you read it on a deeper, metaphorically level, it reaches into your soul at some points. That sounds awfully cheesy but when you read this book it really teaches you about life and how sometimes life isn't fair and we have to accept that. I highly recommend this book to students (but that is probably because I try to teach it now and again in class) but if your teacher never gave it to you, you must pick it up!...more

This book does not do this. I have never been a die hard Guns n' Roses fan, I really know nothing of the band but I picked it up because I thought he would have an interesting life. Like a good bio, it goes into detail from the start of his life till the end (or current times). He is unapoligetic about he decisions and his views on drugs and women but this is why I enjoy his bio; it is honest which is what bios should be (regardless if you agree with the person's lifestyle). Fans of G n' R will enjoy the full colour pages of Slash and the band. But warning, Slash tends to give a bad impression of Axle Rose so if you're a fan, you won't appreciate it. I definitely recommend reading this rock bio....more

I would say Nikki Sixx wanted to write a something and threw some random events and comments together. True bios start at the beginning and take you through a journey. This book starts you somewhere at the bottom of Nikki's drug faze where the reader knows he has hit rock bottom but Nikki refuses to give his substance abuse up. The book is a mish mash of his own journal thoughts as well as other people in his life at the those entries. The other people include ex-girlfriends and Montley Crue bandmates who give their side to the stories that Nikki is telling. This is a interesting feature as I have never seen someone write their own bio and ask others to come in and rip or deny what the author is saying. However, even with this feature, book is rather boring and mundane. I will say this though, it has one of the best artistic layouts that I have ever seen in a book (that is not about art). The art in this book, and the way the pages and text are designed is very cool!. So, maybe don't bother reading it but rather pick it up to flip through and see the art....more

The down side is that it takes place back in the 60s and someone who has no connection or knowledge of that time may fine it hard to relate to...although I find it still current. This story is a diary of a girl who has a normal teen life until one day she goes to a party and is tricked into taking LSD. Then life goes on a ride. She has ups and downs and her life takes a journey. There are times when who root for her and there are times when you want to yell at her. It is very honest and descriptive so whateve your lifestyle may be, you can appreciate the description. The one problem I had with this book was that I found out it wasn't real. It was presented to me as if this was someone's real diary that was published (like a memoir) but I found in the end that it was all faked which was a real disappointment. I'm sure there are diaries of real girls with drug problems out there that would be just as good and because it was real, I feel that, it would be more effective....more

This bio starts off at the beginning of his life and takes you on a ride through his drug addicted world of fame. He is honest about what he has done, which is commendable. However, I find his attraction to women over the top. He tends to over embelish everything about his girlfriends and every one of his mates seems to be "the one" in his eyes which makes me doubt his sincerity. Also, for someone who has been through a lot of drug induced years, he is awfully judgemental about others who are on drugs when he is sober. His soberity goes back and forth alot so I find his words very condescending about others in similar states. But, it is a good bio book and if you're a fan of the band, it is a definite must-read....more

It is about two Metis sisters growing up in Manitoba (and eventually move to Winnipeg) and their struggles with coming to terms with who they are. It is a very intense book that deals with a lot of difficult, adult issues such as alcholism, foster care, abuse (various kinds), rape, prostitution and suicide. I have found that reading this book really opened up my eyes to a culture that I am not a part of and seeing how different choices create very different, often hazardous paths. I like the honestly of the book. It does not ask for sympathy but tells it to you straight. I have taught this at the grade 10 level and often students are shocked into the real world around them. ...more

It is a faily easy read but its topic content is very adult. It deals with a twelve year old girl who is trying to come to terms with her 8 year old brother who has Autism. It has some funny parts but it's a good book to read in general to understand what Autism entails as well as how to handle the challenges of living with someone with mental or physical challenges. This is a middle school book so the storyline and text is a lot younger but it a great "lesson" book to have on file for a child/teen in your life. It will teach them tolerance which is what our world really needs!...more

It has mystery and suspense and action and romance....how could you go wrong? This teen novel about other teens that are forced to hunt each other down in a reality based, sacrificial tradition is an old idea that has brought new light to the subject. The idea of being watched and controlled by a government of sorts has been around for years; just think about "1984", "Fahrenheit 451", "The Chrysalides", etc. These books were written (some) 60 years ago and yet the theme of control and power of a society is still commonplace today; even more so with our addiction to technology. This book combines this element plus or natural urge to survive regardless of the situation (another common theme in history) and reality television. The characters in this book are watched and judged and supported (or ignored) based on society watching them on TV. The mirror of reality is really evident here. We as society thrive on reality based television. The mere fact that they now have a category for reality television on cable channels as well at award shows tells us something. So this book really forces us to see how one can turn from innocent to devilish on a dime and the rest of us are willing, and eager, to watch it all go down!...more

Most people know them as "The Blind Side" family. The movie, "The Blind Side" is based on the book "The Blind Side" written about NFLer Michael Oher. However, book never focused on Michael Oher solely but rather on football as a whole and Oher was never a main part. Nevertheless, the movie was made about his life. Now, the Tuohy family who took him in and raised him have written about on their lives. It starts with Leanne (the mom) and Shawn (the dad)'s upbringings. Then it goes on from there like a regular biography (including their children and their adoption of Michael). It is a good bio because it tells the truth about the whole sitation and doesn't glamorize or hollywoodize their story. It is very spiritual because they are relgious, spirital people. Being not that way, I found those parts slow and boring. However, their morals of life were still good without being preachy and I respect that. This is good bio to find out the truth behind a hollywood or to bring you back from a dark place and give you hope; but as a story- it's ok. ...more

It is one of the better biograpies I have read. His stories are told through a timeline of his life. This is good because often biographies can be just random stories or just year after year telling of a life with no anecodotes. Rob Lowe has had quite a life and from someone older, his fortunate events can seem mind-boggling. He is a very good writer; probably due to the fact that his mother was an English teacher. He is very funny and explains things very well. He is a politcal person, however, and politcs plays a major part of his life as an adult which can seems boring to some. However, I would still recommend pushing through till the end....more

It is a very comprehensive look at Betty White's career television. It was a interesting surprise because I had no idea to what extend she was on or involved with the television industry. However, after reading this you might as well called her the "Eve" of television. She was involved from the beginning of its invention into the public.
She is very detailed in the industry which is intersting to learn about from a media-curious standpoint. However, she has known a lot of people that i have never heard of and a lot of time is spent talking about backgroynd stories of people.
She is a funny woman but it a PG kind of way so there is no fun gossip or horror stories. A good read for media-historial reference....more
