Corduroy is a stuffed teddy bear in green overalls living in a busy department store where he waits on his shelf everyday for someone to come and take him home. One day, to his surprise, a young girl wants to take him home, but her mother explains that she's already spent enough money, and points out that Corduroy is missing a button anyway. He had never realized he was missing a button. Believing this button may be his key to finally going home with somebody he heads out in search of it one night when the store is closed. He starts his adventuring by climbing a "mountain", finding a "palace", lying in a bed, and comes very close to what he believes is his button. When a security guard cuts his journey short, Corduroy is still without a button and taken back to his shelf. He awakes the next morning to a surprise. The young girl has returned with her own money and takes Corduroy home. She takes the bear up their own "mountain", to their own "palace", where he has his own bed. But, most importantly he now has his own friend. A beautiful story about the importance of friendship and the unimportance of physical appearance. The illustrations not only complete the entire story, but help evoke the reader's emotions. The bright green overalls and bright pink coat help keep young children's attention on the main characters during this perfect read aloud. But, the simple illustrations on Corduroy's face keep us tied to his emotions as they go up and down. (less)
