The most of them often disappoints me....but sometimes I find a jewel like this one. I'm not good at describing my feelings...of which I have a lot in this moment
but I have two thoughts over all others...the first one is
And the other is...that I can't wait for the next book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I have read a lot of Young Adult novels (but not recently) and more or less I've always had the same impression: they were superficial and they have weak plots. Underdeveloped protagonists. The love between the characters appeared too fast and was shallow, etc. In summary, the plot outside the romance and the characters (main and secondary) never came to feel real to me. This is the problem that I have with YA novels. It’s unfortunate that so many young adult novels with lots of potential lack proper depth. Just because a book is written for a younger audience doesn’t give it the excuse to be shallow. It was for these impressions for which I read few YA books lately. But I like romance so occasionally I seek recommendations. I stumbled with this book by accident and I give thousands thanks for that! I have no words to describe the relationship between Kestrel and Arin. Although Kestrel felt something for Arin since the beginning, she could not understand what it was. How could she know? She has always been so logical and pragmatic. Their relationship develops so slowly, step by step, in such an exquisite way that I really felt every glance and every exchange and every word between them. And they are both so intelligent and cunning!!!! Nevertheless, they don't understand their feelings - they don't want to understand them- because there is so much more at stake... Their emotions are so intense that they almost hurt. I almost feel their feelings as if they were mine. I heard Kestrel play the piano. I heard Arin sing his song. I felt their confusion, pain, loneliness, hope, disappointment, loss and their complicated and consuming love. This author was able to made me feel Kestrel and Arin beside me. She made me feel them so real. And THAT is something that not had happened since a long time ago with a YA book.
Apart from their relationship, the plot and the secondary characters were great - from Kestrel's father (and his complicated relationship with her), Tensen (I really understand why he did what he did!!!) to the very same emperor.
A weak point, in my opinion, is the world-building. Everywhere I read in reviews about the wonderful world-building of this saga. I don't know if it's because I read a lot epic fantasy books (which often have REALLY REALLY HUGE world-building like in Malazan, The Stormlight Archive, The Wheel of Time, A song of Ice and Fire -Game of thrones-,etc) but I found the world-building very simple. But this is common in YA Books, so since the beginning I did not have high expectations in this regard (the slow construction of the beautiful relationship between Kestrel and Arin makes up for that) :D
Ahhhh, the wait for the next book seems eternal...!! ...more
