When it is time for a bird to fly South he tries to take too much with him. Maebelle knows it is too much to carry so far and asks if she can use some very specific things from his bag for a hat she is creating for a contest. The bird is more than happy to help Maebelle and finds his flight South is much lighter than he had planned. Children get the idea that the bird must fly South for the Winter but will be back in the Spring when it warms up. (less)

Introduce the idea of adding and taking things away (addition and subtraction). Reflection: This books is about a hedgehog who is about to crawl into it's nest for a long winters nap when suddenly an apple falls on its back! Hedgehog and its friends try different ways to get the apple off but more and more things keep landing on it! There are lots of different emotions in this book from sad to frustrated, frustrated to angry, angry to hopeless, hopeless to ecstatic! In the end, hedgehog feels light as a feather and ready for a long winter nap in her cozy nest. Great to talk about emotions, preparing for hibernation, and even some math! Addition and subtraction! The book starts with “black” land in winter, in Spring worked by “brown” hands, “yellow” seeds planted, which become “green” plants, then becomes “golden” corn taken to the tortilla factory. The corn is turned into food that feeds the brown hands that work the black Earth. This book does not specifically target a group of people but rather seems to target the culture of some Hispanic communities which work the fields and crops to grow and harvest the food that is important to their culinary preferences. This book would be great to use when talking about the life cycle of plants, learning about adjectives, or about cause and effect.
Students could use this book to think critically about who the author was targeting, if they are the target audience, look at how the author used colors to describe sesaons, environment or people. (less)

As a child you are scared and can let your imagination run away with you. I believe this book would be good to talk to children about hurricanes, what happens during hurricanes, who is affected, how people prepare for them, and also give children an opportunity to write about an experience that they felt scared or let their imaginations run wild. Encourage students to write about emotions!(less)

The author uses many wonderful, descriptive words to really give you a sense of what that season might feel or look like. The illustrations are beautiful and the words blend well with them. I would use this book with all age groups. For my younger students to grow their vocabulary, talk about adjectives and with my older students have them think about how they can use synonyms for certain words to make their writing more appealing or descriptive to their audience.
