I have used this book in a text to text connection lesson integrated with a lesson on emotions that books evoke. The students used the story line to explain how this book made them feel. It is also a good book to read if bullying arises in the classroom to build up the spirits of the victims. Recommended grade levels: K-2(less)

Jessica can be read on the first day of school to help students to read a story about a girl who was so worried about the first day of school. By the end of the book the little girl does not need her imaginary friend with her anymore and made friends in her new class. Kevin Henkes paired wonderful illustrations help students to use picture cues to understand the book better. This book is very fun to read and to understand due to it's simplistic structure. It can also lead to a discussion about things that are real and other that are fake.(less)

Sends the message to the reader to be yourself and be proud of who you are. The illustrations in the book match the emotions expressed through the text. For example, a page with shouting text is paired with a loud picture to help the reader envision the extent of the emotion. This helps students to read the book with appropriate intonation. (less)

This book illustrates Frida's life from infancy all the way up to her death. The story line is fascinatingly informative and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. Frida is a great book for encouraging others who are disadvantaged in some way but are trying their hardest to be all they can be. It is also a good book for art exploration and creativity lessons since Frida's style of art is so unique and the pages are filled with masterpieces. I read this book in a book store in Mexico for the first time and fell in love with it. It is such a beautiful portrayal of Frida Kahlo's life. Also,
ELL Connection: Hispanic ELLs from Mexico may really connect with this book since Frida was Mexico. They may make connections to the life of Frida and recognize either her art or elements of Mexican art in her creations. Giving ELLs the opportunity to learn about people from their home countries is a great way to help them keep their heritage alive while learning the culture of a new country.(less)

I think it is an excellent motivational book for youngsters who may be dealing with self esteem issues. In the classroom I would use this book if bullying becomes an issue. By reading this book, I can let the students know that as long as each student does his best no one's work is above another's. (less)
