Gitte: I absolutely loved this story for so many reasons. It was raw, emotional, merciless, beautiful yet ugly! I knew nothing about this book going in which made it such an amazing heart-wrenching experience and I frantically read it in almost one sitting as I could not put it down. Every single fibre of me was emotionally invested in this story. It was flawlessly written and I loved the eerie and despondent atmosphere surrounding the words making up this tragedy of addiction; the reality and harshness of life and love. You have this extremely talented person who is trying to survive yet not really living; who has the world and its people at his feet wanting to give everything but most importantly love….so heart-breaking; such a sad waste. This story just grabs you and keeps you in its clutches on an emotional ride with its grunge, poetry, destructive behaviour and torment of epic proportions. I finished this book days ago and can’t get this story out of my head and heart. This story is not for the faint hearted; it will shock you, make you cry and feel extremely emotional.
Jenny: It’s hard to know what to say about this story. It is indeed shocking at times and anyone wanting to read a happy Rock Star book won’t find that happy here. However, what they will find is a very real, gritty, at times heart-breaking, sad story that will leave you wanting more!
This story felt quite depressing, it was gripping and it felt very, very real. No sugar coating anything here, this very raw, sad and tragic story which plummets you head first into the world of music, grunge and drugs is so well executed you will become totally engrossed in the self destructive life of the beautifully talented and tortured Eric.
Gitte: Dazed gives us a naked look into the life of Eric; the beautiful poet and singer /songwriter who is sadly also an addict. The world is his for the taking if only he had the self-worth and energy to do so. Unfortunately Eric is right at the bottom of a ginormous mountain after a series of horrendous events and the climb back up is too overwhelming. Therefore, him shooting drugs into his veins seem to be the extent of the effort manageable to survive. In his short life he has had an emotional and troubled childhood; he has lived on the streets, he has suffered a great loss and he has experienced unreciprocated love. His written words; his drugs; his grunge rock band and the love of a boy named Brian being what’s keeping the suicide tendencies at bay.
Jenny: Gitte, I kept waiting for the feel good moments in this book but they never came. Eric’s time on the streets crushed me, his drug addiction made me angry and broke my heart. I was willing Eric to wake up to himself. I wanted him to see the Eric that everyone saw in him and I wanted him to like himself enough to lay off there drugs, to recognise the talented and beautiful soul that lay within him. I so wanted him to deal with his demons and clean up his act. With every page I turned I lived and hoped the next would a happy chapter for Eric.
Eric has demons aplenty. From his mother who he has a very strained relationship with, to his absent father, to Kevin, a man he loved and who has moved on from Eric. His relationship with Brian was as tormented as it was beautiful. The author captured it all. The anguish, the torment and the suffering. It was all that there and it was devastating but I never gave once gave up on Eric and I never gave up hope.
Gitte: So yeah this story had a huge effect on me; it reminded me of the 90’s when I was a college student in Oxford and used to be down the pub every Friday and Saturday watching the grunge bands on band nights. The drugs were rife, the emotions high and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the minute I found out that Kurt Cobain had died. Eric and his journey made me think of Kurt Cobain and think back to my own collage days! It was so emotional….
This was a story with high emotions, sensitive issues, ugliness and anxiety and the struggle to accept an addiction; accept being loved and breaking free from the constraints of the past in order to come out on the other side free of guilt, self-doubt and accepting you have the ability to love and be loved in return. I cannot wait for book #2 to come out to see how this story continues…
Jenny: You’re so right Gitte. This author certainly captured the mood of this era perfectly. She had me transported back in time and I didn’t simply read this book, I lived it. I lived every painful moment. This book isn’t a read, it’s an experience. An intense, desperate experience. You are with Eric every step of the way as he struggles with living through his addiction, his loneliness and his despair, you actually live through right along with Eric. This is a man who could have it all but will he be able to grasp it and beat his addiction. Will he see in himself the Eric everyone else sees? Will he learn to love life and live it?
This story is not a light read and does include some graphic scenes, but I am so glad I took the plunge to read something that took me out of my comfort zone because this one intense journey is one I won’t forget in a hurry. I absolutely devoured this book! Book two can’t come quick enough. I am so invested in all the characters and I need to see how it continues too.

Breath on Embers by Anne Calhoun was definitely my favourite in this one…it was pretty full on HOTNESS, though I enjoyed them all! Jenny: Okay first off I have to say I love the name of this band! It’s perfect. It makes me want to start up a band and steal the name! So again Gitte,Jenny: Okay first off I have to say I love the name of this band! It’s perfect. It makes me want to start up a band and steal the name! So again Gitte, we took another plunge into a book without knowing what to expect and once again found story we both adored didn’t we? And we do love our Rock Star books don’t we? Seth left Devi (well she forced him to leave) to pursue his dream of becoming a successful rock star as part of My Misery Muse. It was something he always wanted but seeing Devi again after three years causes him to question if that dream was really what he wanted. Devi has never forgotten Seth or stopped loving him, but she had no choice but to get on with life and do the best she could.
Gitte: Absolutely loved it Jenny! It’s no secret how much I love a fab Rock Star book. I love everything about them, the music, the staging, the excitement, the yumminess, and the inevitable angst. And yeah My Misery Muse kept me reading this story in one sitting. It wasn’t an overly complicated storyline; rather it was straight down the line and authentic making it very realistic and believable.
Jenny: Whilst the premise of the story isn’t original the way it was written and the characters we were introduced to certainly made it feel unique and I found myself totally absorbed by this book and couldn’t put it down. All the characters were so warm and relatable and each and every one of them added something to the story. I’m hoping to see Mags and Drakes story at some point. This underlying relationship also piqued my interest.
Gitte: I loved the story-line and thought it had a few unique aspects in the sense that it was about what happened before the fame of Rock Star’dom and a second chance at love and happiness. Seth and Devi were each other’s first love. However, when Seth and his band went to pursue their dream of a record deal Devi broke up with him to prevent her standing in his way. A few years later he returns only to find out he has a son, he never knew about, and Seth being the amazing man that he is wants his family back and this is where Seth and Devi’s journey begin.
Jenny: I really did love our Devi. Devi Porter is an up an coming tattoo artist, working in a Tattoo Parlour and doing her best to bring up her 2yo son on her own. She has never forgotten or stopped loving the man 3 years earlier so he could pursue his dream of becoming a rock star. This gorgeous tattooed, pierced and independent girl was someone a reader could really connect with from the outset of the story. I really found her character such a refreshing change. Did you relate to Devi, Gitte?
Gitte: I absolutely LOVED Devi, such a refreshing and unique character Jenny. She gave up her heart to make sure the love of her life chased his dream. She was strong, selfless and pretty special I’ll say and her love stayed true! And yes I totally related to Devi, I am a kindred tattooed music loving and pierced spirit!!
Jenny: Then we have Seth. From my very first introduction to Seth I knew I was going to love this man. Our gorgeous tattooed bassist leaves the woman he loved and his close friends behind to fulfil his dream of being part of a successful band, My Misery Muse. But the band has hit a bit of a crossroads, with internal squabbling and problems forcing them back to Dallas to regroup and hopefully get things back on track with the band.
I just adored the interactions with Seth and Jaks, apart from his time with Devi, these scenes were probably some of my favourite in the book. Seth just melted my heart when he was with Jaks.
Gitte: I fell in love with Seth pretty much right from the start. Seth is the bassist and the main talent in My Misery Muse. I think Seth must have one of the biggest hearts. Not only is he an amazingly gorgeous tattooed and umm strategically pierced Rock Star. Despite his troubled past he finds and believes in music and love and he believes in what is right and he doesn’t give up! He was so amazing with Jaks and my heart was in a puddle on the floor so many times but the moment that really got to me was when Jaks recognized certain music as being Seth’s. Such a special moment!
Jenny: My Misery Muse was a really enjoyable read for me, Gitte. I loved the alternating POV’s between Devi and Seth and thought it was really well executed and gave the story a certain depth that allowed you to relate personally to the characters. Devi and Seth had amazing chemistry and you really felt the emotion, angst and passion between these two. Their group of friends added a good amount of humor to the story making, but it was Seth, Jaks and Devi’s story and relationship that absolutely grabbed me and these three wonderful characters just stole my heart. Such an all round good read that I finished in one sitting.
Gitte: I completely agree Jenny. I really loved this story and its characters. I loved hearing both their voices because the connection was pretty instant and it ensured that as a reader we got the emotional connection and the background of each character. I thought the balance between serious and funny was pretty spot on and the secondary characters just added so much to the story.
J&G: For consistency in reviewing we must point out that there were quite a lot of grammatical errors and typos in this book. As there were editing notes throughout, we contacted the author to confirm if the correct copy was uploaded to Amazon. We were advised that an incorrect copy had in fact been uploaded and this is being addressed. A new version is currently being uploaded to Amazon....more

I love this Authors style of writing, it’s addictive and I was hooked immediately! The depth of the characters and the way it simmered then suddenly took flight – flawless! This was a refreshing, seductive and highly enjoyable erotic romance filled with plenty of drama and dare I say it a tense and thrilling *whispering* cliffhanger!
Jenny: I’m with you there Gitte, I really enjoyed this one as well. I agree, the authors style of writing is quite different and yes like you, I also found the story addictive. I felt the author conveyed all the inner torment Kasie was going through and we really got to feel the conflict she was experiencing. It was definitely a slow burner but when it took of I found I couldn’t put it down. The cliffhanger! There’s no *whispering* about it my book soul mate! I need to know what happens after that final scene! Like….NOW!.
Gitte: I have to say all the twists and turns and the not knowing where this story was going kept me reading. The main characters of Kasie, Robert and Dave are extremely deep and intense. For such a short read I felt like we just scratched the surface yet knew enough to connect and become completely intrigued. I was left thinking I had them figured out, then suddenly I was thrown completely of that course and down a different road and I loved it!
Jenny: This story definitely kept me on my toes and I have to say I thought I had it sussed. I thought I’d guessed how it was going to end and then…….I didn’t see that coming! This novella felt like an introduction to the next book (Exposed, Just One Night #2 due out March 2013) and I can’t wait to see where that book takes us! I enjoyed this erotic drama filled read. The sex scenes were very steamy but not over the top. There was a good balance of story and steam in this one.
Gitte: I found Kasie to be such a contradiction. Her true inner self is dressed up in a façade of the extreme opposite. She strives for perfection in an understated way in all aspects of her life. She lives in accordance to other people’s expectations; she is a straight and narrow good girl following the path of expectations rather than her own true desires. A sparkling diamond shrouded in a dull and boring cloth never showing the pure exciting brilliance. When she changes the game one night it pulls at the thread of her façade and exposes some of her hidden self and desires. This story is entirely told from Kasie’s POV but I would love to hear Robert and Dave’s inner thoughts in the next instalments of this trilogy!
Jenny: Kasie is organised. Her personal life, her work life…everything has its place and she is living a life to keep everyone else happy, to live up to their expectations. Kasie appears to be going through the motions in her relationship with Dave. Dave……grrr couldn’t stand him! Dave doesn’t bring out the real Kasie. The Kasie that’s hidden underneath, that even Kasie isn’t aware is there. He somehow suppresses her from being the Kasie she could be. I’m absolutely with you on the POV’s Gitte. I would love to hear from Dave and Robert. That would certainly add a new dimension to this story.
Gitte: I immediately loved Robert. He is an older, sexy and powerful man. He knows what he wants and he wants Kasie. During that ‘one night’ Robert manages to find a way to unlock something hidden in her, something she didn’t know was even there, something forgotten. Their one night together is passionate, wild and impulsive. Something she never experiences with Dave who is Robert’s complete opposite. Dave is predictable, straight and non-adventurous something which he in return expects and wants Kasie to be. The dynamics between these three characters, with Kasie as the focal point lends to the age old argument of whether the grey area exists or is it simply black and white.
Jenny: I know some people won’t like this book because of the cheating aspect, but you do somehow see their liaison as grey area, well, at least that’s how I saw it. I accepted it because I saw how Robert changed Kasie in that one night and I liked the Kasie she could be with him. Oh yes, Robert Dade. He of the gorgeous sexy, wealthy man with the salt and pepper hair. Yes, one night with him in Vegas definitely brings out the Kasie that we know is in there somewhere. Their one night together just sizzled and showed Kasie there is more to life than the mundane she is used to with Dave. Robert Dade throws her thoughts and world into chaos.
Gitte: So yeah I thought this story was extremely well written and I really enjoyed it! It was intense, sensual, thrilling and very sexy. I cannot wait for the next instalment as yeah I’ll say it again: shhh cliffhanger!! We hate them right Jenny??!!
Jenny: This was such a good introduction to book two and that’s what I felt this book more than served to achieve. It set us up nicely to want more, to find out what happens and the very small issues I may have had with this book I’m sure will be addressed in Exposed so I can’t wait for March! Don’t talk to me about cliffhangers! You know my feelings on them! They kill me and this one certainly did that. After a glimpse of Exposed I really do need this book right now Gitte! How are we going to last ‘till March?

Jenny: We originally met Jenny and Drew in the first two books in Tara Sivec’s Chocolate series and at the end of Futures and Frostings and GG we both said….these two have to get their own book and lucky for us they did.
Gitte: Drew and Jenny are the kinky couple whose story I was really looking forward to! Drew with his crude sense of humour, extreme sexual appetite and statement T-Shirts and Jenny with her rubber moulded vagina and crazy grasp of words and sayings.
Jenny: These two are crazy. Funny crazy and I love them. They are a match made in kink heaven with matching sexual appetites and an off the wall relationship that just works so well. They have no shame and doesn’t that make for a great story!
Gitte: So the story is basically a simple one, one everyone with kids can relate to….
Children = Death of spontaneous and adventurous sex life!
“I love you too, vagina. I miss you like a hooker misses her virginity. True story. Why have you done me wrong, Boo? Why is there such a distance between us? Remember when we used to hang out every day? Now I barely see you once a month. You’ve changed, vagina. I hate to say this, but you have. You’re a different person now, and it’s like I don’t even know you. I thought maybe you were hanging around with a different crowd of people and they influenced you against me. Maybe we’re just growing apart. I don’t want to lose you, vagina! I need you like I need air to breathe and football on Sundays. I just can’t quit you, vagina!” – Drew
Drew is confused; he wants Juicy Jenny back but has no clue how to go about this or even why little Drew has been exiled. Jenny thinks she has a deformed vagina that may just swallow Drew up upon insertion added to the fact that she is bloody knackered! Cue the story of just about any new parents!
“When was the last time you guys had sex?” Claire asks Jenny
“Um, what day is it today?”
“It’s Saturday,” Claire answers.
In Troubles and Treats we have jumped six years since our last visit with Drew and Jenny to a few months after the birth of their second child, Billy and we join them mid sexual shenanigans drought. Drew’s means for ham shanks were hilarious!
“Aside from the fact that I’ve watched every single YouPorn video ever made twice, I’ve also read every story on Erotica dot com and when I started reading the stories just to see how they ended instead of for the sex scenes, I knew I was in deep shit” – Drew
Jenny: Oh GG to see these two cope with a post children dry spell really is so funny – even though you feel sorry for them, my god they cope with it in the most entertaining way. Don’t think I’ll ever think of a sex swing in the same light again! There is miscommunication, mispronounced words….oh Jenny I do love your mispronunciations! And in typical Tara Sivec way, it is all dealt with in a very funny typical Drew and Jenny manner.
Gitte: I have to say my two favourite scenes were the stalking and the vibrator race. I literally laughed till it became painful, ugly and quite frankly embarrassing. Drew and Jenny’s story told through situational comedy with no frills or dressing!
“I pooped on the police and killed an ambulance. Bring Handcuffs” – Jenny
“Uh, honey. I think we may have gotten the rules of the race a little mixed up.” – Drew
Jenny: The vibrator scene cracked us up didn’t it? It was a classic. Loved it and we definitely had a good laugh about it. For me though the scene that floored me was the tent scene at the concert for reasons that you know GG – because that scene really happened during an Avett Bros concert in Chicago. I can neither confirm nor deny that I was the Australian girl in question. I have to say that I was impressed with how Tara wove that into the story like it was meant to be there.
Gitte: I thought everyone played a fab role yet again and it was like being amongst friends…bloody crazy ones that you wish you had in your life on a daily basis! So yeah I absolutely thought Drew and Jenny’s story was the Dog’s Bollox!!
Jenny: You’re so right Gitte. Every character plays each other off so well and they really are people we’d love to meet and party with aren’t they? I have to say that whilst Seductions & Snacks will always be my favourite in this series this book did give me some good laughs and I really did enjoy it....more

I really enjoyed Deadly Obsession. I thought it was well written and despite me not particularly caring for the celebrity world, I found the way in which this story was jam packed full of sexy romance and thrilling suspense had me hooked right from the start.
I loved that we got to hear the voices of both our heroine and our hero. I developed an immediate connection to both of them as their POV’s were strong and had such emotion.
Our heroine Lauren is an extremely real and relatable character. She is sadly a young widow and has had to work real hard to support her young son. She also has all the typical issues of us real women as well as strength and determination.
Lauren is a very talented yet undiscovered photographer who is itching to get more freelance work. She is so grounded and independent with a real sweet innocence and a heart of gold.
Nic “The Lover” Lamoreaux is one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. And yeah…sigh…he is yummy, despite me finding his nickname way too cheesy though!! Nic is trying to make as many movies as he can in order to make money to protect his secret and his past.
Lauren gets the chance to photograph Nic who she has had a secret crush on since she was at school with him. Lauren is everything Nic secretly wants, and once he discovers her talent, he decides to help her start off her freelance career. Upon meeting at a photography session, this is where their journey begins which is one of secret fantasies, love, lust, jealousy, hate, obsession, dark secrets and violence.
The thrilling suspense in their story comes in the form of a stalker aptly named NicsBitch who seems to know his every move, eerily so and everything gets pretty ugly once Lauren enters Nic’s life. He has to make the decision on whether to forego his heart for her and her son’s safety or try and find this psycho killer stalker.
At times I found the story a little predictable, yet I also found a lot of refreshing twists and directions which combined with the fab characters and the romance was pretty spot on; making it a sexy suspenseful well written read.
Overall, I thought this book was a great read and it definitely had me hooked, I look forward to reading Deadly Vices #2...more

EachSo, if you like a bit of BDSM Kink in your Christmas Stocking of the m/m, f/f, and ménage variety then this collection is definitely one for you. Each is delivered with high emotion and some humour. As with all Anthologies readers will no doubt prefer some over others and that’s me included. The creativity by all of the above Authors to get into the Christmas spirit went above and beyond. At times I had to laugh because who knew the things you could do with wrapping paper, candy canes and Christmas lights! True Christmas Kink; fun and games. Also, despite the shortness of the stories I was amazed by the emotion these Authors were able to make me feel. I have to say that the story ‘Submissive Angel’ by Joey. W. Hill was my overall favourite. I thought this story was absolutely beautiful.

Gitte: So this one came out of left field didn’t it Jenny, I LOVE when that happens. A new4.5 Stars Jointly reviewed for http://totallybookedblog.com/
Gitte: So this one came out of left field didn’t it Jenny, I LOVE when that happens. A new Author; a book I’ve never heard of before and then I go and fall in love! Yeah no doubt, loved this story, loved all the characters, fell in love with this Author and her effortless writing style and I CANNOT wait for the next book in this series! Pure indulgence … like your favourite comfort food!
Jenny: It sure did GG. Going into this book I knew nothing. I just plunged straight into it – I hadn’t even read the synopsis and wow! This book blew me away. I intended to read a few chapters, do a few things around the house then come back to it. I ended up reading it in one sitting! Absolutely LOVED it!! I felt the same as you. Loved the story, the characters and just fell totally in love with Lynda LeeAnne’s writing style. The story was fast paced and never let up and it was such a great ride. I’m definitely a fan!
Gitte: I have to say that reading this story, I had no clue where it was going which was such a refreshing change; the story line was a winner for me. It could have been obvious and predictable but it really wasn’t through most of the story. It also had the right level of humour, passion, drama and angst for me to make this a good read. I was intrigued and really couldn’t put it down so I read it in one sitting and as it’s not a huge book nothing got neglected…much! I will say though that I would have loved for it to have been a bit longer only to get to the depths of the characters more and their background. In this case though wanting to know more is a positive thing in my opinion.
Jenny: I needed a change and this book was IT! As you said, it had it all – I honestly was completely consumed in this book from start to finish and at times read it with a huge smile on my face such was the humour mixed in with angst, drama, emotion with some steamy scenes thrown in for good measure. I found myself really invested in these characters
Gitte: So we start the story off with Lexi and Lan who are very young and in love, love of the intense and forever kind. That is until Lan makes a HUGE mistake. A mistake which at the age they are, is very ‘real life’. This mistake sets off a string of events that are both heart-breaking and emotional yet written with such humour at times that it came across really well. The story continues some years later when consequences of their actions throws them into each other’s lives again.
Lan is absolutely gorgeous despite being an arrogant arse a lot of the time; I completely fell in love with him. He loves Lexi fiercely and protectively and he says what he thinks so you are left in no doubt. His mistake aside, I thought he was pretty amazing and without spoiling anything, what he has on his body….sigh, I melted but not before I managed to get a lick in…I wish Jenny!!! Oh, I have to say my heart broke for him a couple of times in this story.
Jenny: I loved how the story just forged straight in there – no build up here – you were right there from the first chapter and oh my did it plunge straight in. My heart absolutely broke for Lexi and I felt so much for her because of the situation she found herself in at the start of the book. Gitte I loved Landyn (Lan) right off the bat. I know I should have hated him and even messaged you saying “It’s okay that I’m madly in love with that bastard Lan isn’t?” In real life I’d punch him in the face, but in bookland this guy was it for me! You convinced me it was okay to love him and that was good enough for me GG *wink, wink*. I know exactly what you’re talking about and dear god……save me a spot to lick GG………………..hmmm where were we??
Gitte: Now I have to say I really liked Lexi. She came across quite strong and level headed yet vulnerable and I guess a bit naïve at times. She too made a few mistakes that consequently put her in a situation that sparked a lot of drama. I didn’t really agree with some of her decisions but then again I can see why she made them. Lexi also had me in stitches at times and her spirit and boldness was admirable under the circumstances.
Jenny: I adored Lexi. She made me laugh, she made me cry, I felt for her in the situations she found herself in and yes, once or twice I questioned her decisions but all in all she was a great character that I warmed to straight away.
Gitte: I loved the supporting characters in this story so was thrilled to reach the end where I found out that Trish, Lexi’s quirky best mate, who was funny, sweet and cheeky would have her own story. Oh and Adam…who is LUSH!! I don’t want to give anything away about who Adam is, all I’ll say is that there’s a scene with him that really shows he has that alpha male protectiveness thing going…I swooned big time!! His book, I am so sure is going to be FAB!
So yeah what a FAB first book from this Author. Can’t wait to read more….
Jenny: The supporting cast of characters were fantastic. I absolutely adored Layla, she positively stole my heart! Oh my god GG we both loved Adam didn’t we! Bring on HIS book – he was just divine!!!! I swooned over Landyn – he had the whole alpha possessive thing going on and even though he was a dick at times I loved him from the start. There was a point I got to in the story when I had to take a breather and regroup….my stomach was in knots with anticipation! I even messaged you when I got to it and had to be assured I could go on. I know, I’m a drama queen but it really did get to me!
This book has been one of my favourite reads this year and I can’t wait for the next two books in this series! An unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable read!...more
First of let me say that this book is not for everyone. It is dark and intense and can make the reader uncomfortable at times. Also, comparis3.5 stars
First of let me say that this book is not for everyone. It is dark and intense and can make the reader uncomfortable at times. Also, comparisons to Fifty Shades have been made but this book is nothing like Fifty Shades, it’s raw, gritty, dark and disturbing. Some scenes after the half-way point were very graphic and twisted.
If a reader picks this one up purely for the Fifty link, that is not so subtle from the huge sticker on the cover, then this reader may very likely be sorely disappointed or find Eighty Days Yellow too hard-core. I am going to hazard a guess as to this being one of the main reasons why this book has failed to impress going on a lot of negative reviews which is a shame because Eighty Days Yellow is beautifully written.
I thought this story to be very slow to start with, however as it progressed it improved and I was gripped to find out what was going to happen to our heroine.
Our heroine’s name is Summer and we are first introduced to her lying sprawled naked on her boyfriend’s floor listening to Vivaldi blasting from her stereo; lost in her own head.
Summer is an exceptional violinist who lives in a cheap bedsit in London. Although she is hired for classical gigs she is so skint, she also busks in the London Underground. This is where Dominik hears her on his way to work, rather than sees her but for her fiery red hair. He is captivated.
A month later he is still thinking of this mystery violinist unable to get her out of his head. After a sad occurrence sees Summer’s violin destroyed and her story published in the news Dominik is now able to find her so he contacts her with an offer and a ‘Play For Me.’ All Summer has to do is accept this offer. This is where their journey begins.
Summer had me on the edge of my seat, shouting at her for her naivety, her ignorance and I have to admit, I was scared for her throughout this book. She just didn’t think of consequences nor believe that she could say no. She thinks heightened sexual and pain related emotions no matter how wrong they are will make her feel alive. Summer’s sexual needs and wants took her to the extreme and it was as if she wanted to find her limit and kept pushing. When she was finally done and she said the much needed “No”, I was in a mess and had just about lost my mind. She is so lonely and self-destructive. There is so much brutal cruelty towards the end that I despaired and thought about throwing in the towel as it clearly looked like Summer wasn’t going to.
So did I enjoy it? Yes I did, despite the issues I had with it, and I loved the ending. I also really liked Dominik, I think he saved the book for me to an extent. He too is pretty screwed up at times but nothing compared to some of the secondary characters who created a complete min f**k. I have to say, as well, that I loved Summer’s internal monologue. I do wish however, their relationship had been explored more and that this frustrating and exhausting fake nonchalance wasn’t so drawn out. Perhaps this is due to this being book #1 in a trilogy? And yes I desperately need to read the next two books which are out so no need to wait.
I would like to add, that in my opinion, this story has been marketed in a way where you inevitably start this story with pre-conceptions and unfortunately this has had an adverse effect on its readers. As I said before, it is beautifully written and it provokes and questions the psychology of its characters. It should not be compared.

J&G: This will be a long review so be prepared – we wanted to review this jointly and both have so much to say about this book, so it was hard for us to condense this review.
Jenny: There are those rare times as a reader when you pick up a book and get the feeling you are about to embark on something special, something profound happens to you the minute you close that book. It’s a unique feeling and there is nothing quite like it for a reader is there Gitte?
Gitte: There really isn’t and yeah it really was a very unique and emotional experience which will stay with me for a long time to come, if not forever. We had no idea what to expect and I have to say it was both scary but very exhilarating too!
Jenny: Gitte and I both went in completely blind on this – no synopsis, we read no reviews, we knew nothing, and what an experience it was for both of us. This book was all about living in the moment, living every day to the fullest and following your heart. Great messages and it really drove them home.
Jenny: Where to start? Firstly, I have to admit I’m almost hesitant to attempt a review of this book because I don’t know if what I say will do this book justice – I’m hoping my words are adequate because this book touched my heart and reached deep into my soul and it will own a place there forever.
Gitte: For sure, this story is definitely in my top 20 this year and considering I just rounded 255 books so far this year, this in it-self speaks volumes! That is how much this book and its characters touched my heart. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this story took a piece of my heart, no doubt!
Such an unexpected journey which elicited every emotion possible in me. It reminded me of what is important in life, it made me “open drawers and embark on a proper clear out”. I stayed up most of the night to finish it, not because I wanted it to end, because I could happily have stayed with these characters, rather because I simply could not put it down.
That night I cried myself to sleep.
“the HEART always wins out over the mind. The heart, although reckless and suicidal and a masochist all on its own, always gets its way.”
Jenny: I have to be honest and say for about the first 20% I thought – hmmm I have no idea where this is going, what it’s about and I wasn’t sure if I was going to actually connect to Camryn. This book was a slow build, but it was needed to have the reader understand and feel what Camryn is feeling - to know how she started and to see her journey and self- realisation at the end all started from the very beginning of this story. At around 30% I was pulled right in. I was at the point of no return. Camryn was working her way into my heart and I was absolutely connected to her, understood her and felt for her. It was here that I became a part of the story. I stopped becoming a reader and started a journey with two characters Andrew Parrish and Camryn Bennett, that was to become one of the most heartbreaking, emotional, funny, joyous, passionate and beautiful journey I taken in quite a while.
Gitte: Yes, I absolutely have to agree with Jenny here. It was a very slow build and I didn’t have an instant connection with Camryn either but I agree with Jenny, in order to fully understand her journey we needed a piece of her history in order to fully understand her. Understand where she was coming from. Camryn, for me, came across brave yet broken, determined yet unsure as to how to free herself from her allocated slot in the world. As she began to shed the burdens of life, the restraints set by society, the weight of her past I felt part of her deliverance.
Jenny: Cam (Camryn) was looking at life from a distance. Cam wasn’t ”living” life, she felt like an outsider, like something was missing – life for Cam is monotonous. She needs to break free from life and do something spontaneous and that’s just what she does. She embarks on a road trip that was to turn her world upside down and open her up to experiences she never thought she would.
As a reader to find a book that allows you to share a story with the characters is something rare. I was on this adventure with Cam, I visited every place she went to and I could almost touch and smell the things around her…..every moment became something I shared with the characters.
Gitte: Camryn Bennet feels her life is becoming a bit like a broken record. Nothing changes, she can walk blindfolded through the days, the weeks and still carry out daily tasks, her feelings on hold…living in numbness almost, from much repeated routines. And yeah spontaneity is a foreign word which one day enters Camryn’s vocabulary when she buys a random bus ticket and takes off from her life in quest to not only to find herself but also escape from herself at the same time. On this journey at no point did I feel like an outsider, rather I was there, on the bus sat on the opposite side of the aisle watching events unfold. I was right there every step of the way breathing and feeling their journey with them.
For me, my heart was gripped the minute Camryn met Andrew. Their story being a beautiful journey of friendship and love. About listening to your heart, being true to yourself in every way that matters and living life to its fullest potential. Live in the moment and make that moment count! Make it a memory.
“I think I’ve been afraid most of my life to be myself.”
Jenny: Cam really came into her own and the story really did taken on a whole new life when Andrew Parrish came onto the story. Andrew Parrish…what a guy I have to say, Andrew is my number one book boyfriend at the moment. Andrew is perfection and this man, without exception, completely and utterly stole my heart. What a fascinating, funny, alpha, beautiful man he was. Yep, gorgeous smile, tattoos and not afraid to stand up for his woman, speaks his mind, has passion (oh boy is he passionate!) lives and loves life and let’s not forget his music tastes…how can you not love a man who is into Bad Co, Kansas, The Stones and Led Zepplin….yes, Andrew ticked ALL the boxes for me. The dual POV was effortless and both voices were so important and HAD to be heard.
Andrew: “I don’t know how I got myself into this, but I do know that as much as my conscience is ripping into my fucking ears, telling me to leave her alone, I can’t. I don’t want to. We’ve already gone too far”
Gitte: The minute Camryn gets on that spontaneous bus ride, her life is altered forever. A random act, changing the course of her life, when she meets Andrew Parish on her journey, making it their journey.
I am in complete agreement with Jenny here on two things. Andrew is indeed the most amazing man, completely eligible for that coveted number one spot of book boyfriends we love (note the absence of fictitious here!!) I absolutely LOVED his POV in their story. I actually preferred it to Camryn’s because I found it to have a slightly more emotional pull on me. Both were necessary, absolutely, how else would we have so utterly connected to these two characters.
Andrew the gorgeous man with the green eyes who is strong and beautiful (yes he really was in its purest of forms and it took absolutely NOTHING away from his manliness, as wow he was ALL MAN!!). Andrew was fun, he was honest to a fault and he inspired and believed in the basic human need for fulfilment, he was passionate and yeah…inspiring. He had a sarcastic dirty mouth yet the biggest and most amazing souls. I fell in love immediately the minute I heard his voice. *sigh* the things he says…how he says them…his mouth…*sigh*
He was flawless in my eyes despite the emotional baggage he carried it did not make him unreachable nor did it make him an arse. At no point in their journey did Andrew falter in my regard of him. He carried his burdens and his emotions with class.
“For the first time in my life, I’ve felt whole, alive, free. You were the missing piece of my soul, the breath in my lungs, the blood in my veins. I think that if past lives are real then we have been lovers in every single one of them. I’ve known you for a short time, but I feel like I’ve known you forever.” ~Andrew
Jenny: As they spend time on the road together Andrew becomes her teacher – showing her how to speak her mind, live in the moment, reach for your dreams and open your heart. Cam is a willing student to Andrew and he is her missing piece. Cam in turn shows Andrew what love is and the two of them learn to break down barriers and drop their guards and the result is something so beautiful and passionate that I can’t think about these two without welling up and smiling all at the same time. They experience so much together and Andrew helps her face her past and move forward. He understands her and draws her out of herself and she starts to confide and share her feeling with him.
Andrew: “Pain is pain, babe”
“Just because one persons’ problem is less traumatic than another’s doesn’t mean they’re required to hurt less”. (How very true!)
Gitte: Yeah ditto to that Jenny and that quote could not be any more true if it tried!
Whatever you want to call it; fate, destiny or kismet Andrew and Camryn were meant to find each other, and this they did at a crucial point in their lives. At a time where each needed the other for different reasons. Each drew out the best in the other; unravelling the layers exposing the truth, the real wants and desires in each other, the hope and also the kick up the arse they both need. A deep friendship from an instant connection from which their journey begins…
“You dwell on the past, you can’t move forward. Spend too much time planning for the future and you just push yourself backwards, or you say stagnant in the same place all your life.”….“Live in the moment.”
Jenny: Everything in this story just felt so real to me. Even the sex scenes, though very steamy, felt real…..they were handled beautifully and at times erotically, but always with reality. This was real, the story was mesmerizing captivating, raw and gut wrenching, passionate and so very beautiful. The journey these two take both on the road, emotionally and spiritually is like nothing I have ever read before and I warn you to have tissues on hand, you WILL need them. Be prepared to take this book into your heart, it will be one you will never forget.
Gitte: Again, completely agree with you here Jenny. This story actually felt real. Like “the memoirs of….”
How often do we describe a story as taking us on an emotional roller-coaster ride?! I often use this comparison because reading and joining two people on their journey of self-discovery you inevitably, if well written like this one, feel the bumps, take the sharp turns, anticipate the drops after an immense build up, feel the butterflies, feel your tummy drop on that step decline…It’s all there… it really is. It’s emotionally draining, extremely passionate, thrilling, inspirational and oh so exciting!
Jenny: A memoirs. Gitte, that is such a good way of describing this. It really was just like that.
I have to say I highlighted so many beautiful quotes throughout this book but to post them would give too much away, so I’ll leave with this one.
“I wanted to say thank you.” “For what?” ” for making me feel alive.”… “Well, everybody needs help feeling alive again every once in a while.” “No,” she says seriously… “I didn’t say again , Andrew; for making me feel alive for the first time.”...more

So I was quite excited to read Rock The Heart. I had purposely stayed away from the teasers. First off I want to say that “you cannot re-invent the wheel”. There are so many books in this genre out there that yes despite comparisons being inevitable and originality somewhat unreachable, to purely compare would be injustice to this book and its Author.
I love my rock star books, music and its artists are an obsession of mine, so yeah I am a sucker for hot rock star books!
Did Rock the Heart offer me anything new? No not really. However, the male hero did and I have to say that between him and the secondary character Riff (who I loved), the pair of them made this book for me. Noel had such arrogance…but was kind of charming with it. His broken heart; his struggle to become the famous rock star; his vulnerability, his piercings and tattoos, his unwavering love despite everything…yeah he had me!
“This next song goes out to the girl who shredded my heart without hesitation back in high school. It’s called Ball Busting Bitch, and Lanie this one’s for you.” – Noel
The plot…Without spoiling it too much, which is really easy here, I will say I enjoyed the build-up and was really excited as it put a bit of a different spin on things to begin with.
Lanie is our heroine and has just graduated out of College, following her dreams of a career in marketing. Lanie does not take risks, she is actually very straight and narrow, knows what she wants and isn’t about to budge for anything in her way to achieve this dream. She is quite a normal kind of girl. She has her insecurities like everyone else yet she is a breath of fresh air in the sense of her strength and her being unfazed and almost uninterested by the whole rock groupie phenomena. She is a woman who broke her first love’s heart, Noel, when he became a hurdle in the road of her dream due to his own. Yeah I can’t say I completely understand Lanie here but then again I am biased because I really liked Noel!
Their story was quite a ride, a hot frustrating one where some of the plot kind of reminded me of two other books I have read already this year. Despite this there were enough differences to avoid too many comparisons and taken for what it was, the journey was enjoyable, sexy and at no point did I consider leaving it.
So, overall, did I enjoy this story? Yes, however something seemed to be missing which could have made it great, details – issues left – touched on but not explored. The transitions from one chapter to the next felt kind of abrupt at times, that I was left to think huh…what happened next? How did we get from there to here and what happened in the mean-time? Also, at times the editing was below par and spell check had clearly altered words. This may sound harsh, I know, but what I am trying to say is that there was a great story here that came across as just good because of this. I do want to say though that I absolutely LOVE the cover. It completely makes a cover snob like me happy!! ...more
Jenny: Gitte, is it possible to fall in love with a book and its characters from the first few pages, because if it is then that is exactly what happened to me in Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. I fell in love with this book instantly and my feelings didn’t waiver until I read “the end” and even then I’ve spent the past few weeks thinking about this book and how it affected me.
To say I have loved everything this author has written is an understatement. Every word she writes is flawless and every word demands to be read. This story took me completely by surprise. I didn’t know what to expect and what I got was so much more than I could have ever hoped for. This story touched me, moved me, humoured me and devastated me and I loved every minute of it. Hopeless is a darker read than Slammed and Point of Retreat and I was absolutely enthralled with the places this author took me throughout this book.
Gitte: I am speechless Jenny, after I had finished this book I felt faint; every word this Author wrote squeezed my heart tight; made me dizzy and light headed….my eyes hurt as did my head; I just could not put it down! I am in complete awe and utter admiration….Reading Sky and Holder’s story left me breathless, made me cry. This Author captures a reader in a tight hold carries you with words that each takes their rightful place in your heart and doesn’t let you go until the story has been told. Long after, every single word still stays with you. This story just flowed so naturally. The relationship between the characters was inspiring their relationship and story intense.
“The sky is always beautiful. Even when it’s dark or rainy or cloudy, it’s still beautiful to look at….it’ll be there no matter what…and I know it’ll always be beautiful.”
Jenny: I know how immersed you were in this story, you wouldn’t even answer your phone until you finished it. Sky is heading off to High School (and school in general) for the first time after being home schooled by her Mum for her school life. Unfortunately, she is forced to do this on her own as her best friend Six is moving away for six months and leaving Sky to face her first year of school alone. Her introduction to school isn’t a pleasant one with the other students already having a preconceived opinion of who Sky is – they couldn’t be more off the mark where Sky is concerned, but Sky takes it all in her stride and she is lucky enough to make a friend in Breckin. This friendship is just so warm and funny! I just loved these two. They were kindred spirits and I absolutely cracked up at the banter between these two. I have to say GG that I just ADORED Sky. She was strong, independent, yet vulnerable in some ways, funny and when her story starts to develop my heart just ached for her and the sorrow and sadness I felt for her was all encompassing.
Gitte: LOVED Sky; she was an amazing character. She is up front and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. She is honest, genuine, funny, adorable, naïve yet knows more than a person should know. The somewhat sheltered life she has had, for reasons which become clear, has left her with this endearing quality an tangible innocence. Yet at the same time she had a spot on sense of humour and a sarcasm which yeah made me fall in love with her even more!
Jenny: Sky has never “felt” before. She has kissed a few boys, but she has not felt anything with them…nothing. That all changes when she meet Holder. Dean Holder has a troubled past and a reputation and temper that precedes him. Dean Holder……Wow! Be still my beating heart! I LOVED this guy! He stole my heart from the outset. There is an instant attraction between these two but it’s not just an attraction – it’s something deeper, something instant, a connection. They both feel it and the chemistry between these two was palpable. You absolutely felt their connection and you immediately needd to know why Holder especially is so drawn to Sky. Sky is wary of her feelings for Holder but she confides in him. In Holder she sees something, she begins to open up to him and express her feelings of “nothing” -. Holder assures her that with him she will “feel” – “the moment my lips touch yours, it will be your first kiss. Because if you’ve never felt anything when someone’s kissed you, then then no one’s ever really kissed you. Not the way I plan on kissing you” – and how true this was! Not only did Sky feel that first kiss but I swear I did too GG!
Gitte: If anyone could make Sky feel again it had to be Holder. Seriously Jenny, what can I say about Holder. He was pretty damn perfect! I LOVE this guy. He was perfectly imperfect!! And yeah Jenny I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck and arms stand up because I felt it too!
Jenny: I felt exactly the same GG! To watch the relationship between Sky and Holder develop and flourish was something I devoured! These characters entered my heart….they nestled deep down in it and have found a place there forever.
The intimacy these two shared could be felt, with every word, with every touch and with every breath you feel it. This author really does have a way of bringing her characters to life and in this story they are brought to life so realistically that at times I actually found myself clutching my heart. You really do care what happens to these characters.
Gitte: This is where I have to bring the intensity up again. This Author just has this amazing talent that completely draws a reader in. Her words have a hard impact yet they soothe too; making each established word count in a way that it gets absorbed and doesn’t leave, instead burrowing itself into the heart of the reader thereby creating a scene, an atmosphere, a picture, a feeling, a memory a smell even a perception or judgement.
The characters in this story…I loved them. Both of them. Their story… was beyond heartbreaking, amazing, touching, beautiful and emotional even funny at times. Hopeless is without doubt one of the best books I have read this year. What an amazingly talented Author Colleen Hoover is, Sky and Holder will always have a piece of my heart!
Jenny: Couldn’t agree more GG. This is definitely going to be up there as one of my best reads for this year that’s for sure! As each piece of the story was peeled away and their pasts revisited, my heart broke one piece at a time. It initially broke for Sky but in the end it shattered for both of them.
There were twists and turns all through this book and the reveal crushed me. The way it was handled amazed me. The ending satisfied me. It all felt so real, and I felt I was there with them in the moment for every moment. My interest, concern and love for these characters never wavered and I felt every emotion they felt.
There is the perfect blend of light and dark in this book so you don’t feel weighed under with sadness but you do feel sad, you do feel the hopelessness and the hopefulness of Sky and Holder. Just as it becomes too much and you think you won’t recover, the author injects humour and warmth and brings you back from the brink. It was perfectly crafted, wonderfully told and Hopeless forever has a special place in my heart.
J&G: This book is a departure from Slammed and Point of Retreat and we’re so glad this author took the plunge and wrote this story. As readers we love and admire any author who can break the mould and produce a story that surprises us and gives us something different and that’s exactly what happened with Hopeless. Don’t’ got into this thinking it’s a carbon copy of her previous books. It isn’t, and it is for this reason that this books so excited us. Colleen Hoover is one storyteller who we feel could write just about anything and it would be captivating....more
Be still my beating heart because I am being inundated with hot sexy mysterious alpha males this week. Oh yes girls, you are going to want to meet ThiBe still my beating heart because I am being inundated with hot sexy mysterious alpha males this week. Oh yes girls, you are going to want to meet This Man…Mr Jesse Ward!!! Gorgeous!!! New book-boyfriend alert!! A must read for sure!
This story is set round London and it is written by a FAB-U-LUSH British indie Author who keeps it real by keeping British slang and words, making it true to its roots, right for the story and above all authentic!! For our non-British audience don’t forget Google is our friend for words we may not have in our daily vocabulary!
The writing is spot on and flawless, it had me hooked from page one and I immediately knew I had a gem of a story in my hands. This Man is the first book by Jodi Malpas (first in a trilogy), but you wouldn’t know it. It’s pure class and right up there in my top reads for the year so far.
This Man is not only SEXY; it has a great story. It is hilarious at times, sarcastically funny at others; it has a sweet, intelligent and relatable heroine; Ava and yes our very own mysterious, domineering gorgeously hot Jesse Ward; who actually is slightly crazy too…*sigh*…. Ava is an interior designer who is sent to 'The Mansion' where she has been requested by the owner for a project. She is not happy about it and dreading meeting this pompous and batty ‘Lord of the Manor’. So yeah, she’s not expecting much and just wants it done and dusted. Enter Jesse Ward…batty?…pompous? No not so much; more like cocky, domineering and oh so sexy. The attraction is instant and the build-up is one of the best I have read in a long while.
Jesse and Ava have a powerful chemistry which I felt right from the beginning and the sex factor is off the charts passionate, however this Author got the balance of story and yumminess spot on!
Their relationship is very much like an assault course of obstacles and a fast and crazy ride you kind of want to get off at times but know you wouldn’t possibly want to miss the thrill of. It gave me tingles and yeah I came over all unnecessary…a lot!
Jessie sure knows how to stalk…umm I mean pursue the object of his attention and affection! But then again, he is a man in control, he knows what he wants and when he, in this case surprisingly, finds it he is like a dog with a bone (yeah kind of literally). But oh my…his overwhelming need to protect, to keep safe, to love what he deems his…took my breath away at times. My heart also broke for him…but I am not going to say why, just that vulnerability in a strong man like this makes me all teary!
Don’t get me wrong this guy is a complete arse at times, infuriatingly so…but isn’t that what we love from our fictional (that word should be banned) characters?! There were also a few high 5’s or fist bumps (whatever is cool right now, don’t want to show my age here lol) between Ava and me as their story unfolded because she gave right back at times, good girl!!
It is so easy yet again here to spoil a great story so I didn’t want to give too much away, there’s quite a few twists and revelations, a couple are predictable yet most are not. The whole “how old are you?” became frustrating to the point where even I was shouting it at my kindle, (I may have actually sent a message to the Author asking her that very question…may have done…not confirming that.. (*hanging my head in shame*).
Now, what do we dread more than anything when we hear the word Trilogy….yeah we think cliff-hanger don’t we. So this has one…..but it is not bad…not much. The second book in this trilogy; Beneath This Man is set to be released around or after Christmas, no date set, but I know I for one will be picking that one up the minute it gets released! Cannot wait. ...more
Gitte: Wow Jenny I absolutely loved this book for so many delicious reasons, I could not put it down. It definitely was a new play on the whole Fifty Shades & Bared to You theme, although comparisons are inevitable. I think this is my first book with a Flight Attendant theme and I kind of loved it hahaha. It was refreshing and yeah the whole Mile High club *wink wink*…HOT!
Jenny: I think I might just quote our text message conversations to let people know how we felt about the start of this book……..
Jen: “OMG! I am never going to sleep……4% in and I bloody love this book”
GG: “I’m at 32% and cannot put it down”…..
Jen: “I’m screwed then, it’s gonna be a late one for me – I think we are in book love together”…….
GG: “Yes you really are screwed and yes we are in book love”………
Jen: “Holy crap…..knicker change in seat 2D” I may never be flying the same way again! Okay, moving on!
Gitte: The chemistry between Mr. Cavendish (sigh) and Bianca was fantastic, it not only ran deep on an emotional level it was pretty spectacular and steamy hot too! James Cavendish, *sigh* he is a yummy hot dominant alpha male…oh and let’s not forget a billionaire to boot!! What that man can do…his whole attitude…be still my beating heart!! Bianca is a sweet gorgeous girl who is completely clued up and street wise. She knows what she wants and values everything she is and has. She is a mystery to start with which James slowly unravels as she unravels him in return. The scene with them on the plane right at the beginning, I suppose you could say after their first connection…umm I don’t know about you Jenny but I may have re-read that one more than once whilst sat in the freezer!!
Jenny: I can neither confirm nor deny if I re-read that scene…..oh who am I kidding, you know me too well, of course sure did! And of course the freezer was the only place to read it. Wow, the chemistry was there from the outset! No slow build here – these two had an instant sexual connection. It was steamy. At first we’re introduced to Bianca and her best bud Stephan and I love the relationship between these two. You’re immediately drawn to her as a character because she is so innocent on one level but so worldly on another so she is a very intriguing character from the beginning. Mr Cavendish – well, what about him? Geez….hot, billionaire, alpha, possessive male who knows exactly what he wants and he wants Bianca and the hunt is on!
Gitte: I am adamant not to talk too much about the story because this one is easy to spoil, what I will say is I fell in love with James & Bianca immediately, oh and I absolutely fell in love with Stephan too. These three characters are so well written and my connection to them was almost immediate. I felt the emotions, and as I learnt more of their background they definitely took a piece of my heart. I thought what we learnt of their back story was so well written; we were given just enough to hook us as readers, giving us an insight into their psyche and understanding their subsequent behaviours and actions. Bianca's relationship with James, it was not only LUSH; it was also an extremely emotional connection between two emotionally scarred people who upon finding each other learnt to open up to another albeit slowly. The end result of their traumatic pasts mirrored despite being different.
The friendship between Bianca and Stephan was heart-breaking and yet so amazing. How these two came about finding each other when they were teenagers up till the dynamics of their present day friendship, I melted at the fierce love and protection.
Jenny: I instantly loved the connection and friendship between Bianca and Stephan. They are rock solid and there for each other. They’ve been through so much and they mean everything to one another and I am dying to see their past unravelled more in Mile High. Yes, we have to be mindful not to give anything away for fellow readers because it’s all about peeling the layers away of this story and enjoying the journey. To find out why Bianca is so receptive to James and his lifestyle when everything about her screams that she should be repelled by it.
Gitte: So yeah Jenny, I really enjoyed book 1 in this series. I thought it was really well written; it kept me hooked till the end with great characters and a thrilling story. The balance between the ‘sex factor’ and the story was spot on!
Despite the similarities of some of the storyline to Fifty & Bared to You, I enjoyed it, as it was different enough to stand on its own. No inferior imitation here! I don’t know about you Jenny but I am dying to start on book 2!!
Jenny: I agree Gitte. I loved the writing, loved the characters the storyline had me riveted and it consumed me every step of the way! Like you say, there will be the inevitable comparisons to Fifty & Bared but it is also is definitely not an imitation. There was a good story mixed in with the sex (oh dear god….the SEX!!! HOT!!) and yes! Charge that phone Gitte because we will be burning up the phone lines once we start Mile High *wink, wink* !
Writing: 5 stars for the intense and intelligent writing. Emotions: 5 stars - It brought extremely intense emotions. I have never read anything like thWriting: 5 stars for the intense and intelligent writing. Emotions: 5 stars - It brought extremely intense emotions. I have never read anything like this. Characters: 3 stars - Only the roles of Rapist and Victim feature in this story and we are given nothing on them, which yes served a purpose but left so many questions unanswered! Overall story taking in my feelings of the ending: 3 stars Content: Un-rateable: Extremely graphic depictions of rape, sex, and violence that is not for the faint-hearted and I struggled. This was a very difficult read for me.
Do I subscribe to shock value? Do you?
I couldn’t help thinking about this question, as I read this story, freaking myself out by being unable to put it down as the obscene depravity actually caused me to feel sick to my stomach. Okay I’ll be honest with you, I actually was sick….once. Let’s get it all out there…this entire story is psychologically beyond anything I have ever known or read about rape. It scared me, I cried, it pulled me way past my boundary, my safety….right over the edge into the darkest place I have ever been thrown by a story. I questioned myself, I questioned issues raised in this book making something irrational make sense as in “what is the worst thing that could happen to me...how do I compare, and in relation to what and who?”
The writing is exceptional and intelligent. If this had not been the case I would never have finished it. The brilliance of the writing made me turn every page, much like an endurance test at times as I needed to know how this macabre storyline was going to end. Don’t get me wrong I asked myself continuously why on earth I was still reading and at times I had to stop. However, at no point could I stop thinking about this story whilst reading, which made me pick it right back up. Do I fully understand why? No….no I actually don’t.
As a reader there is no gentle easing into the crux of the storyline. Our female lead wakes up with her rapist right from the get go. In fact she wakes up whilst in the act of being raped. On the whole, your focus is solely and purely on the actions of the rapist and his victim over two days of hell on earth.
It’s a psychological battle of wills between a psychopath and his victim. A victim; who questions with defiance yet with the respect necessary for her situation.
We do not get to know anything about the rapist and his victim other than the fact that he was hired to break her psychologically into nothing. In relation to what they look like, their names or who or what they really are, we remain clueless.
We know them as the rapist/he and the victim/her. It is purely about the actions and the consequent feelings and emotions. The writing here is so cleverly played because it makes the actions super magnified; there is nothing else, we see and feel only that. The emotions intensified because your complete focus is taken up by that. Brutal!
The strength and the hope right at the core of our victim is staggering…she puts up a fight with her words; her cunning, her personality is her ultimate strength. The back and forth; the battle of wills, to put it mildly and for want of a more accurate expression, between the rapist and the victim blew my mind!
The rapist is arrogant, egotistical and has no boundaries. He believes himself to be flawless, a rape artist. A mastermind in breaking and stripping his victim of her rational thought through physical pain extending into the core of her being. Destroying her hope and her self-preservation; driving her into a shadow and extreme soul destruction.
The ending was anticlimactic. The possible ending being what I kept on reading to know. I was left un-satisfied. A small victory sure, but I needed…no craved more. I needed more than one of my many questions answered. I did not feel satisfied; rather I felt cheated.
One word will haunt me for a long time to come: Checkmate
To me; this song; these lyrics paints an emotional picture of this story…I had it playing in my head as I was reading:
Jenny: Well, we said we needed a book to “wow” us didn’t we Gitte and boy did we stumble upon a beauty!
Gitte: We really did Jenny. Just wow indeed!! Jenny: I have to say upfront though that the Prologue sort of confused me and I was wondering if I was going to get into this book but a few pages later and this book hooked us didn’t it?
Gitte: Yeah I was a bit confused in the Prologue as well. I felt like I had missed something, I wasn’t sure what was going on, then suddenly the story grabbed me and it did not let go. Even after having finished, it still has my heart beating real fast and I still get the shivers and a tear in my eye when I think of it.
Jenny: I thought this book was so beautifully and intelligently written - at times it was like reading a journalism piece from Rolling Stone Magazine and I found prose descriptive but not annoying. This author certainly had a way with words. The first thing I felt was an affinity with was the music and how it introduced us to Lily and Tristan. That's what pulled me in immediately. I loved how the author wove The Clash – (London Calling, White Riot….lord save me!) with Tristan’s band Devised, at the start of the book at the Brit Awards. It made you feel like you were there and was pure genius! How Lily felt about the music, how she felt watching these bands, it really spoke to me. I could feel her connection to the music and she experienced everything I feel when I watch a live band so it wasn't hard for me to connect to her and the story straight away.
Gitte: The music is what got to me. I love when it’s music I have a connection to as well as in this case London and the people in the business! I heard it, I saw it; I experienced it. When a story is told as brilliantly and as vividly as this one with such apparent knowledge and intelligence I felt it and got the immediate connection with Lily and Tristan. I love live music…if I don’t go to at least 5 concerts a year as well as local gigs I feel lost, the feeling of it is like a drug. The way the Author described Lily’s reactions to the music, how much and what music means to her…I felt it, because this is me, this is how I feel!
Jenny: We first pick up the story of Lily meeting Tristan for the first time. All nerves and insecurities in coming face to face with her idol….not only in Tristan but Mick Jones from The Clash, backstage after a concert to ask them a few questions for her music blog. Have I mentioned how much I loved the meshing of reality and fiction here? haha
Gitte: The first meeting, yeah you just know something special happened there. We felt what it meant and did to Lily when she met Tristan for the first time. Yet Tristan’s words...I don’t know…I just felt at the time reading it that this random episode was going to mean something to him too.
Jenny: Now Gitte, Lily isn't our usual type of heroine is she? We can't say much because we wouldn't want to give anything away but a few things she did surprise me about her and you know what? I sort of found it quite refreshing. What about you?
Gitte: I think we have gotten used to a certain type of heroine Jenny, hence the shock factor at some of Lily’s actions. However, I have to say what a fantastic and refreshing change Lily made. I have to say she intrigued me from the start!
Jenny: Fast forward five years later, with Lily more established as a music journalist, more independent and about to meet Tristan, who is now a big deal in the music world, to conduct an interview. Lily is quite intense, has put up huge barriers, she comes across as a bit of a loner, gets overwrought, has flaws, insecurities, and has had years of wandering and “not feeling”. Seeing Tristan again ignites something in her that she can't explain, even to herself. Her reaction to him and his music is extreme. He affects her in a way no one ever has.
Lily: “I’ve just met the love of my life and lost him all in the space of an hour”
Gitte: Aww Lily, you fell not just literally, you also fell in lust and love at the same time all those years ago. Our Lily, who I still haven’t figured out, must has been through something in her past I am sure, resulting in her being so emotionally closed off. She certainly is intense and seems like such a lost soul who has problems identifying her feelings for what they are or even letting herself feel them. She has convinced herself that love is not important; emotions are not important. They bring pain…and not the pain she will willingly admit to wanting. Perfection, anxiety, hurt and numbness….
“How do people deal with desire?”
Jenny: Tristan…..what can I say about Triz??? We can’t stop talking about him can we? All Dark eyes, dark hair, beautiful, talented, deep, and over 6ft of brooding alpha, dominant, rock god who just oozes sexuality…..hmmm think it's safe to say we bloody loved him! *wink, wink* Tristan was such a puzzle. Just who was Tristan? From the first time I met him I wanted to know him, know his secrets, know more about him, I wanted to know what made Tristan tick. Oh yes, this guy had me wanting more!!!
“I let my glance drop down his body, oh my there was a lot of him. What the hell was I going to do with all that? He was made for sex, I'd never been this enticed by a man's body before.”
“He was animal and beautiful, and I felt like I was looking at a work of art. His beauty was so modern, but there was a whisper of something ancient in his proportions” Wow Gitte, I love this author’s writing.
Gitte: Yes…sigh…Tristan. I absolutely LOVE this guy! Hahaha Jenny, that quote is highlighted after I read it more than twice, yeah not going to lie. This Author’s words are mesmerizing at times…a lot of the time! Tristan had me right from the start with his words when he and Lily met for the first time. I immediately thought wow…who is this guy! Yes, he is not only a gorgeous Rock Star…he is intense, each word he speaks has meaning; a meaning hidden within a meaning. I was completely drawn to him, I wanted to know everything I could possible know and I wanted more too; this man is one hot enigma with a painful past!
Jenny: The sexual chemistry between these two? Seriously, it was tangible! Tristan and Lily are such passionate, complex and complicated people and getting to know them and experience the intensity between them just had me spellbound. Yes, these two had me hooked! There was just something so deep and so intense about them, I had to know more!! And this author unwrapped them so slowly and wonderfully that it was killing me (in a good way!) and I was so immersed in their story I just wanted to race to the end to see how it all unfolded.
Lily: “My body felt like someone had held it in their hands. ……….. satisfied and thoroughly fucked” Tristan: “And you make me come insanely hard”
Gitte: Yeah the Author sure knew just how much to give away reeling us in then having us grasp at scraps here and there to satisfy our need to both know and understand. I think it’s safe to say both Lily and Tristan are emotionally messed up. Though; I’d say Lily more so than Tristan. There is no simplicity here. The connection between Tristan and Lily is intense, it is intricate and heavy and you can literally see it and feel it as a reader. What the other means to them differs to begin with. I think they each see what they want to; what they think they need and want. Confusing as it may be to Lily as she is more emotionally closed off from the world except the music. Tristan embodies music which is where he has an advantage on her.
Jenny: What about the sex scenes??? OMG we burnt up our phones discussing these! They were intense, hot, descriptive and ummm yeah…hot!! This author can certainly write a sex scene. Ummm did you delete those text by the way? You delete yours and I’ll delete mine. Deal?
Gitte: Oh for all that is HOT…the sex scenes. Shivers, tingles, heavy breathing and a racing heart…yeah that would be me, I am not talking about Lily and Tristan here hahahaha. Possession, Obsession and control….
“I knew you’d be like this he whispered” …..sigh……
Jenny: I absolutely loved this book and felt bereft when I got to the last page – I wanted…..no, needed more. I will say the only thing I didn’t like was Tristan’s nickname for Lily…..that was kind of a ewwww moment for me, but I moved on from it. Thankfully the next book will be out around December….roll on Access Restricted I say because I NEED more Tristan. Hello new book boyfriend – we’ll have to share him though Gitte because we can’t fall out over a fictional character ;)
Gitte: You know that moment you hit 85% on your kindle and you think noooo please keep going don’t stop; I am NOT ready to end this journey, I need more…I still don’t understand everything!! Lily and Tristan have me spellbound…I cannot let them go…I have so many unanswered questions and even though this story does not have a cliff-hanger as such, it leaves you almost grieving that it has ended. I need more Tristan and intriguingly enough I definitely need more Lily! I cannot wait for Access Restricted to land on my kindle! Oh and Jenny…I think Tristan is more than man enough for the both of us!! ...more
I love Laura Kaye’s stories, they have hot romance, they have humour and a spectrum of emotions for real every day issues. She sucks you right into heI love Laura Kaye’s stories, they have hot romance, they have humour and a spectrum of emotions for real every day issues. She sucks you right into her story from the start and spits you out with a satisfied heartfelt and emotional sigh when you’ve turned the last page.
One Night with a Hero was a great sequel to Her Forbidden Hero, was it predictable…yeah kind of, did this influence my enjoyment? Nope not at all! Laura writes sexy indulgence with just the right amount of emotional angst that makes this reminiscent of a glass of your favourite wine accompanied by a handmade exquisite chocolate truffle. You know the kind I mean I am sure.
We have Brady; Brady is just lush! A very sexy, gorgeous, tall, built and very alpha Special Forces soldier, but he comes with huge emotional barriers.
Brady had a pretty messed up childhood. He grew up with his sister under their abusive father’s hand after their Mum died. As a consequence he does not believe in love, marriage or commitment. Rather he is the king of one night stands…he believes in lust!
Brady has recently moved into town as he has real anger management issues and is under instructions to get his head straight. These issues all stem from his childhood and Brady struggles to get a handle on his emotions.
Then we have Joss; Joss is wild and an absolutely beautiful woman inside out. Joss has such a big heart but a real sucky track record with men and their commitment issues.
As someone who yes has had pink hair, have piercings and tattoos I loved this character, it was real nice to have this heroine who was that bit different to the typical!! Joss comes across as confident yet has an endearing vulnerability. She has a quick wit and is pretty clued up.
Joss and Brady meet by accident. He sees her sat in the park reading, looking desolate. The immediate chemistry between Brady and Joss is intense and hot and that night after an extremely passionate one night stand is where their journey begins…the plan was never to see each other again! Yeah like that was ever going to happen hahaha…
So I loved this story it was a quick sexy romantic read with well-developed characters and not once did it feel rushed or lacking. I can definitely recommend this series. ...more

WhenSpecial Forces , Mercenaries and Veterans by Aleksandr Voinov and Marquesate
(This review encompasses all the books in the Special Forces series.)
When I first sat down to try and write how I felt after reading this series, no words came. I knew I had just read something amazing. I often say that if a book makes me experience extreme emotions I know I have read the best there is. Well until I read book one in this series I never knew that I was capable of a book to affect me as much as this one did; as the whole series did. I knew I had read something genius something I will probably never experience again. I hold my hand up honestly and say that this series goes beyond everything I have ever read in my 37 years of life and I hesitate to say that I doubt I will ever feel as strongly about a story and 2 characters like I do now.
This series has affected me like no other and it has changed me forever. As I write this I actually feel the emotions as strongly about this story as I felt when reading it weeks ago. So believe me when I say, I don't think I am going to be able to write any kind of adequate or eloquent review that does this book any justice, it’s the honest truth.
My fan girl love affair with the brilliant Mr. Voinov continues no matter how much this genius of a man tries to test me, my sanity and my feelings.
This series is the EPIC 25 year journey of Vadim Krasnorada and Dan McFadyen; two enemies who meet in the line of duty during war in Afghanistan. Their lives crossing paths spanning years. Their story consumed me to the point life ceased to exist. I could not let them go.
To quote and use the words of Mr. Voinov:
"They eat you up, swallow you whole, digest and churn you around until their loneliness spits you back out again."
Their story messed with my head and my heart like no other before; it is brutal & tender, ugly & beautiful, painful & hopeful.
I had intense feelings of despair, hatred, happiness, at times I felt sick to my stomach and forgot to breathe, other times I laughed in relief. My emotions were all over the place. I was so confused with how I felt. I have never cried through a whole book before. But at times I was sat reading with silent tears that just didn’t stop.
Dan & Vadim’s journey is filled with revenge and torture; the aggression and lust between two powerful men turning into so much more on a journey that I both hated and loved.
Such perseverance, beauty and compassion I fell in love, no matter how irrational that felt to me at times, with both Dan and Vadim. My heart felt like it was going to burst with how much I loved these characters; still does when I think of them.
No two men’s love has surely ever been tested as much as Dan & Vadim’s. They have had just about everything anyone could imagine thrown at them. The logic said they shouldn’t have been together in the first place so to battle like they did through the ugliness of war, the two sides of conflict, the near death, the obscure obstacles, I was turned inside out….they captured me completely and their hold on me will never let up.
Their journey is not pretty, it is raw, ugly and kicks you where it hurts and oh does it hurt, but it is a genius work of beautiful basic human emotional art. I was stripped of all superficial emotions right down to the raw and the pure, layer by layer as I moved through their story. I was slowly seduced by the awe-inspiring words that had me absorbed in the story to the point of being an emotional nervous wreck.
I could sit here and write and write about how amazing Special Forces is, but finding the right words is proving too difficult and I would be here forever, it needs to be experienced. After “living” 25 years with Dan & Vadim where I went through: War, Rape, Torture, Killing, Lies & Deception along with the ultimate strength of Love and the true meaning of Home, I was exhausted, overwhelmed but I was oh so satisfied at the end. I felt like I had been in a nasty fall and was picked up and lovingly put back together.
I actually feel honoured to have been allowed on this journey written by Mr. Voinov and Marquesate. A journey that will stay with me forever. Vadim and Dan changed my life and they took a huge part of my heart, that will always be theirs.
“You’re my home. I will find you.”
“I will... find you. If it’s the last thing I’ll do, I’ll come back. Nothing will stop me.”
“If I touched you, that’d be it.” Dan shook his head, “Damn, how the fuck am I going to make you understand?” Pleading, almost. “You are everything, don’t you get it? You are the Afghan mountains, the damned red dust, the endless sky. You were my home, and more often than not, also my reason. You are unlike all the others, unlike anyone I shag, because when I touch you, it’s not just a touch, it’s eleven years of heaven and hell.”
“You made me human. I stand by that. You made me into somebody I would have wanted to become, if I'd ever thought about what I wanted to be that wasn't about a record or power or a rank or some...delusion I was chasing. If all that was gone and stripped away, the man I am, I am because of what you did, what you made me feel all those years.”
Now, for those of you who feel strong enough to go on this journey you are able to download it free, yes I am shaking my head as I type free, from Aleks website:
I really like Marie Coulson’s writing style, it’s easy to read and I thought it was a good first novel from an Author with loads of potential2.5 Stars
I really like Marie Coulson’s writing style, it’s easy to read and I thought it was a good first novel from an Author with loads of potential. The premise of the story and the quality of the writing had me hooked from the start and I loved the dilemma of two very different, almost night and day, male leads as the love interests of our heroine.
I have to applaud the Author and her writing on the intensity of my feelings for the characters in this story. I have never liked yet detested characters so much and so on and off throughout a book before. At the beginning, I liked them all and I enjoyed the connections, the flirting, the banter and the yummy scenes. Then the ride went crazy and the angst was turned onto G-Force levels that left me dizzy and unable to keep up.
So in this story we have our heroine, Layla.
Layla is a few months away from her 20th birthday and is leaving the home she shares with her divorced Dad to go to College. Here she meets Amy her roomie and Oliver across the hall. Layla immediately finds a job at a local coffee shop where she meets the elusive slightly older Jared.
So what did I think about Layla? To begin with I really liked her. She was sweet, outgoing and an independent hard-working girl.
As the story continued however, I have to be completely honest here and admit that she started to drive me crazy. As she herself proclaimed, she thought she was a very mature, honest and like-able woman. Yes I got that too in the beginning, however as the story unfolded and she became the object of Jared and Oliver’s desires and love she turned into a stroppy and selfish teenager. Granted, she is 19 when the story begins, yet nearly 20 but she acted very immature for that age. I know it was a long time ago for me, however, I do remember being 19. So here’s where I am thinking it was a personality thing not an age thing. She was unforgiving and insensitive; threw over the top tantrums and was quite the hypocritical and dishonest little madam. How Jared didn't get whiplash I don’t know. Then she’d go do something nice and I’d think oh maybe she is not so bad…yeah no! She just didn't redeem herself to me at all. Even when her friends Mel and Amy had news about themselves or their life, Layla managed to turn it back to herself, her troubles or dilemmas. I feel awful here because I really liked her to begin with and I tried so hard to keep liking her, I wanted to like her, but the final nail in that one was the way she played both Ollie and Jared. It just didn't sit well with me at all. Considering the fact that she herself was the culprit of what she accused them off…yeah no!
Now, I don’t think I have ever read a book before where I switched from one team to the next, so this was a first for me. I must have switched about 3 times through this book as our main guys Jared and Oliver characters developed. I’d think I had them figured out, then they would go and do or say something which made me think hang on…that is not in line with your characterization and I’d turn to the other, I guess I was confused. I think unfortunately this made me dis-connect with them slightly and in the end I actually wouldn't even know what team I was on though I lean towards team Ollie! I’ll get back to you on this one once I read the sequel! I have to say though that overall I thought both Jared and Ollie were delicious and yeah I wouldn't say no to either of them but only once I’d given them a kick up the arse!!
Okay so we have Ollie. I have to say I loved him. He was the bad boy, tattooed and pierced rocker with a huge heart. This huge heart had me really feeling for him in certain scenes and I wanted to give him a bit of a kick up the arse in regards to his leniency of Layla! I thought the Author actually wrote him really well but he deserved so much better! He was a great character.
Now Jared, I loved him from the start. He was a romantic, gorgeous, hot and funny guy. So protective and he loves fiercely. I completely started off on 100% Team Jared, that was until he became a bit too mushy and did something which after the short amount of time and an extremely bumpy ride just didn't make any sense. At times he sounded a bit like a woman…the prose he uses to write Layla was not in keeping with his character in my opinion. However, I really felt for the guy because no matter what he did it just wasn't right.
To sum up, despite my personal feelings about the heroine which was an integral part to how I felt about this story, I have to say that it was very well written. There was just too much angst and so many misunderstandings which in the end I put down to Layla’s immaturity.. Now, the ending, I thought was really well-written, it completely caught my attention – which one would she go to…....more
Gitte: This right here is pure classic Kele Moon yummy indulgence with emotion and is one of the many reasons why I love this Author! It’sReviewed on:
Gitte: This right here is pure classic Kele Moon yummy indulgence with emotion and is one of the many reasons why I love this Author! It’s a story about finding love and the emotional turmoil involved in a rocky journey that will make you melt, *sigh*, squirm in your seat and shed a tear. A story about finding that love in the last place you would look, then losing it because of differences and consequently having to fight to get it back.
Jenny: I love nothing more than when I hear Kele Moon has a new book coming out because I've yet to read something of hers that I don't like. Kele’s books are like my reading equivalent of a security blanket lol. Yes Gitte, this story definitely had all the above! It had angst, drama, emotion and was sizzling…so yes! I enjoyed this story immensely.
Gitte: I don’t know about you Jenny, but I got sucked into this story immediately. Kele Moon sure has a way of pulling us in and messing with our emotions, falling in love with her characters then throwing a spanner in the works, bringing us to tears right?! The emotions are so intense throughout this story, it’s written so well, so vividly that I could not put it down. Oh and Jenny did you not think that starting this book with a broken heart was genius, page one and I felt sad already lol?! Though I do have to say that even though I knew the breakup is coming it didn’t affect the journey and it still made me cry when it did happen because Kele Moon made these characters come to life.
Jenny: I'm right there with you girlfriend! I was sucked into this story straight away - no easing my way, just bam! I was there! Kele definitely had me immediately and yes, it definitely had something to do with starting the book from the end - and agree that even though you knew the breakup was coming it in no way interrupted the journey you had getting there.
Gitte: So this book is about Alex and Matt, two guys from families that are as different as night and day. Alex is a local boy to the island of Mirabella who has to work hard to earn every single much needed penny and Matt is a rich boy who spends his summers on the island with his wealthy family. Their story begins with their heartbreak after splitting up years ago and we get thrown back into their past to watch their story unfold from day one when we see them fall in love. These two gorgeous guys somehow against all odds fall deeply in love, but circumstances and meddlers leave them so vulnerable to the fear of the future causing that horrible 6 year separation they went through….
Jenny: Alex and Matt…..can I let out a dreamy sigh here Gitte?
Gitte: You sure can, and I’m right there with you!!!
Jenny: This was a simple yet no less emotional read and one that I devoured from start to finish. The chemistry between Alex and Matt…..wow!!! It was hot! They're opposites. They were young and in love and let outside influences seep into their relationship. Can they move forward and give themselves a second chance at love and happiness? Oh I loved taking this leap with these boys!
Gitte: Oh Jenny I thought their story was so sweet, funny, heart breaking and umm yeah HOT!! Hahaha….
Jenny: It sure was, we loved these guys didn't we GG!
Gitte: We sure did! My favourite moment was the “fishing scene” …. My heart melted!! The scene was so real and really touched me, and Matt's love for Alex was so intense and inspiring….*sigh*
“You’re better than the beach on a spring day, Matty.”
Jenny: Oh le sigh………………………
Gitte: Right so we have Alex who is a gorgeous cocky, sweet and a very laid back guy. He saunters through life living day to day, hand to mouth.
“Alex was 100% team cock and Matt was certainly his kind of conquest.”
OMG Jenny I snorted my coffee at this line hahaha.
Jenny: Ha! Are we book soul mates or what!! I had that line highlighted so we'll have to share it - I loved the fishing scene as well.
Gitte: Alex hides his sexuality behind his friendship with Holly, his best friend. These two are so close that people think they are having a relationship. Alex lets people believe this as he finds it easier to pretend than being subjected to judgement and to prevent his brother finding out.
Jenny: I loved Holly - she had no filter and I found her a great character and a good counter balance for Alex. Haha I think only he could tolerate her!
Gitte: Matt is honest, bold says what he thinks. He comes from a rich family and is the heir to a business empire. He starts working for a year in the local diner where Alex works because of a bet. Matt is definitely not sure what team he bats for! Matt is adorable, I loved him!! He has the biggest heart and is so gorgeous!! Seriously I wanted to pick him out my kindle and squeeze him tight!! He is treated so badly by him Mum and then…the heartbreak….I was SOBBING Jenny!!!
“All he knew was he felt alive and sexual in a way he’d never been before this moment. No girl had stared at him like Alex did, predatory and hungry. Just the look in Alex’s whiskey-colored gaze running over him hotly, the flames dancing in their depths like a physical manifestation of the blaze that had risen up between them had Matt willing to go along with anything he asked.” - Matt
Jenny: I loved Matt as well. He definitely had a heart the size of Australia that's for sure! I really connected with him and the treatment he received just let me heartbroken. Trust me…you weren't sobbing alone!
Gitte: So yeah I loved this story for so many reasons Jenny, but mostly because of Matty, I’m not going to lie! My only issue is that I wanted more….more of what happened after you know what was resolved…it ended too quickly for me…not enough afters!
Oh and Jenny…funniest quote in this book:
“My mother has been calling all fucking day.” Matt groaned in annoyance.
“I finally gave in and just spent the last twenty minutes listening to her bitch about how much I suck.”
“She was bitching about that?” Alex pulled back with a mock look of shock.
“Your sucking is one of my favorite things.”
Jenny: What a way to end a review! Ha! On that note, there is nothing more I can add, that is definitely a highlighted quote for me as well. Love it and loved this book!
Gitte: So Jenny I thought this was a fab debut novel by Ella Frank. The story line didn’t immediately grab me the reasons for which I will come back to in a minute; more like it slowly grew on me, then suddenly it had me all warm and fuzzy…much like an unripe peach left out in the hot sun..*wink wink*
Jenny: Haha Gitte! Love it! Great way to describe how this story unfolded! It did take a little while for me as well and I’m guessing the same reasons as you but then…….. it had the peaches, and then it definitely brought the cream…*wink, wink* indeed
Gitte: Hahaha yeah sure did! I thought Exquisite was written really well, it came across real and was an authentic portrayal of human emotions. The story flowed really well and the changes in point of view between Lena and Mason were effortless and not once was I confused as to who was speaking and it definitely made this story so much more emotional having both voices. It also made me fully connect with Mason!
Jenny: Have to agree with you there. I thought it was really well written and I connected with Mason immediately. I’m a fan of dual pov’s so I really did love hearing from Mason and thought his voice added so much to the flow of the story. Then there was this one scene… …I think you know the one I’m talking about……..go on, try and read my mind!
Gitte: Let me guess…….it has to be the shower scene! OMG Jenny how HOT was that shower scene….the visuals wow…That…is….all…!!!
Jenny: That was beyond hot! We do love a good shower scene don’t we Gitte and this one was up with the best of them. Wow! In fact there were quite a few sizzling moments in this gem of a book!
Gitte: Overall, to me this was a really refreshing romance because our hero and heroine didn’t immediately fall into bed with each other with instant attraction instead they almost kind of “hated” each other on sight. Mason found Lena to be bad-tempered and harsh and she thought he was an infuriating Casanova. But despite that, the attraction was there.
Jenny: Yes, Lena definitely had a preconceived notion of whom and what Mason was and she was a cranky piece of work but somehow they “clicked”. The sexual tension was palpable that’s for sure.
Gitte: The banter between them was great, the drama was fab and once we got to the sexy time…umm yeah NICE ONE!! Though Jenny; I have to say what the effing hell was the hair/cock thing all about? I just did not get or understand that one…I re-read it a few times and nope don’t get it and I kind of want to shout eeewwww!!! What was that?
Jenny: Oh yeah, the sexy times were very sexy indeed, but OMG! Haha! Gitte – when you rang me saying “have you got to the cock/hair thing yet”? I thought you were joking - ummm no you weren’t and that part had me perplexed to say the least.
Gitte: Right, so we have Mason….our Hero. I loved him! He is a celebrity chef, owner of Exquisite, with a Casanova reputation. He is funny, gorgeous, vulnerable, loving and has an endearing cockiness about him. He was one of the most personable male hero’s I have met in a while, because he was almost attainable if that makes sense? Mason is still looking for “The One”…
“My dad once told me that one day I’d meet someone who drives me so crazy I want to strangle her and yet never would because I can’t bear for her to be gone. Well, that’s when I’ll know I’ve met a woman worth keeping.”
So our serial dating bachelor Mason is not only a cocky hottie, he has such a huge heart for his family and friends. He melted my heart so many times I lost count…..so our serial dater met Dr. Lena O’Donnell.
Jenny: I can’t add much else to that GG. I loved Mason Langley!!! He was confident, hot, successful, warm, tender, handsome, funny and smart, with an amazing body and had a great ass (what?? He did!) And yes, he had room in his heart for everyone. Really, what’s not to love? I did enjoy him standing up to Lena.
“So suck it up princess. Easy, relaxed Mason is gone” ……….(go Mason!)
Gitte: Our heroine Lena is a Paediatric Doctor who has still not come to terms with a tragedy from her past. Since then she has functioned in life, but you couldn’t say she has been ‘living’ it. She has had no real romance or fun. She is an intelligent, lovely girl with a big heart which sadly is covered in armour so thick that she lets nothing in and nothing out in return.
Now Jenny, I think this is where I had a few problems with the story grabbing me at first. I have to be honest here; I didn’t like Lena much to begin with. I understood why she cut herself off, guilt and the pain of bereavement affects us all in different ways. I got that this girl had a heart of gold and the way she was with her friend, her patients made her come across as a funny, loving and a spirited girl at heart. Therefore, to me, her almost icy personality that surfaced at times did not make sense to me and almost put me off her completely. It was downright rude, not a reaction to a situation. I don’t know how to explain it really Jenny but I just didn’t get the intense hot/cold thing she had going at first. Did she redeem herself to me…absolutely!! Her strength and her love and determination won me over.
Jenny: Yep, I know Lena was also the reason I had a hard time connecting with this book at first. I did feel sorry for her because of the guilt she was carrying around and the blame she put on herself for her past but she just seemed to be downright mean at times. Her personality swings were like watching ping pong. I kept telling Mason (via my Kindle) to run for the hills – she just seemed awful to him.. She definitely did redeem herself and I really warmed to her but have to say that had it not been for Mason being such a great character, she could have stopped me in my tracks at the start of this story because I really wasn’t connecting with her at all, but Ella Frank turned that around she became warmer and more relatable, even sexy and sensual.
Lena: “I think I just came from just looking at you”
Gitte: Oh Jenny how amazing was Mason in helping her deal…he is so determined to knock down that armour of hers, and show her what love and life is all about! LOVE HIM!!! Oh Lena did her best to scare Mason off and push him away but our Mason is nothing but persistent and ummm thorough!!!
Jenny: Gitte, how many times did we say “I love Mason Langley” (GG: quite a few actually!) when we were discussing this book? Mason was a persistent man and he saw something in Lena that she didn’t even see in herself. How he got her to face her problems and was there for her – oh that man melted my heart. When he was dealing with his demons? Oh Mason I wanted to hug you and make it all go away.
Gitte: So yeah, this story got to me, slow start then suddenly I was hooked and I have to say I loved all the supporting characters too. It was an emotional journey of love, strength, pain and fighting for the one you love by saving them and showing them how to love and live life again.
Jenny: Having just returned from Chicago this was a trip down memory lane for me and I loved relating to the places mentioned in the book It really was a good story and had everything you could want in a story….some wonderful characters, a story of fate, hope, love, loss, sorrow and finding that one person, your other half you can make all that pain go away. Yes Gitte, I did love this one. ...more
Jenny: Wow! I don’t know what to say about this book GG. I do know one thing though– I could NOT put it down. I read it in one sitting and even forgot to eat. True story.
Gitte: Yep, me too Jenny! I woke up at 6am and read without a break till I finished it at 11am. I brought the kids into bed with me and gave them my husband’s IPad and told them to play nice. Now they know they are not allowed to touch it so they didn’t argue and they played nice for 5 hours…This book was crazy addictive.
Jenny: Ha! Glad I wasn’t the only one then! I am going to describe this book as Sons of Anarchy on crack and Deuce, our hero (can you call him that?) as a mix of Jax Teller on porn and Tack from Kristen Ashley’s Motorcycle Man. “looked hot as hell in a tight white tee, his leather cut and ratty, low-slung jeans…leather motorcycle boots” this guy has piercing blue eyes..built like....well, you get my drift…he was all tattooed bad boy and yes dammit, I had the hots for him something fierce. What about you Gitte, what did you think of Deuce?
Gitte: Firstly, good question Jenny…“was Deuce a hero”? I’m not sure….Did I fancy him? Hell yeah absolutely, he was hot, wild, dangerous, gorgeous and a tattooed biker. Was he a bastard? Absolutely yes! I hated him and I fell for him.
The Prologue: Mark Twain said “the two most important days in your life is the day you were born and the day you find out why” I don’t remember the day I was born but I remember the day I found out why. His name was Deuce. He was my “why”. And this is our story. It is not a pretty one. Some parts of it are downright ugly. But it’s ours.”
Jenny: Well, ugly it certainly was, and at times it was downright disturbing, but damn if it wasn’t also so very addictive. I should have really hated this story – some of the characters were awful, the situations were disturbing and yet I found it compelling and I was absolutely hooked. This story grabs you and hits you upside the head with a baseball bat and I think I texted “WTF?” about 20 times to Gitte throughout.
Gitte: Hahaha yeah you did and I was right there thinking “WTF” with you. They have this ride in Legoland that is a large circle made up of attached train carriages. It goes round and round with a speed that quickly builds from slow to super-fast whilst bouncing you up and down at the same time. This book felt like that ride and had similar effects on me. It is not a picturesque ride, it is very disturbing. This ride is not peaceful it rattles you. This ride throws you around in multiple directions but the thrill of it makes you want it to last longer and makes you want to go again…and again. It is addictive.
Jenny: The story is set in the world of Motorcycle Gangs. The Silver Demon’s and The Hell’s Horsemen are the two main clubs and the story is centred about the bikies who belong to these Clubs. Now I have to say if you’re a bit touchy about the overuse of swearing in your books then this one isn’t for you….f**k is used in pretty much every sentence. Bear in mind that it is set against the world of bikies so you would expect that.
Gitte: Ah yes…the Motorcycle Gangs. I have to say that I do love my biker books so the setting of this story had me intrigued and salivating.
“Back of a bike is comin’ for ya and soon too cuz baby the way you’re looking at me is tellin’ me you want it. And you want it bad”
Jenny: Eva Fox, whose father “Preacher” is the VP of the Silver Demon’s MC is in Riker prison. Eva is only 5 and visiting her father there when she meets Deuce who is 23. Yes…..that’s right, there is an 18 year age gap between our H & H. I do have to say….even though the age gap is regularly referred to, and it is a big gap, it isn’t an issue or weird. She is the VP’s daughter and as such she is fawned over and protected by the boys in the club. She is the most prized possession and Eva is strictly “off limits” to the men, although Preacher does have an idea of someone for her that could benefit the club.
Gitte: Yeah, so the age gap I thought was dealt with sensitively in the beginning Jenny. There was no weirdness for me as it started out all sweet and innocent…well as much as it can with a meeting in a prison, but you know what I mean. Now I loved the heroine Eva. I really did, she grew up with us as readers, and at no point was she annoying or whiny. She started out an innocent but pretty clued up little girl whose surroundings did their best to mess her up and drag her down. Her life running parallel with Deuce’s, whose life is crime and abuse ridden with ‘effed up relationships too.
Jenny: Deuce – (or Douche as I referred to him at times!) is VP of The Hell’s Horsemen MC and Deuce sure did test me at times – he did some pretty shitty things throughout the book! Deuce is immediately taken with this gorgeous little girl and sees everything right in the world through this child’s eyes. He has led a life of crime, death and abuse by his father and Eva gives him a glimpse of something so pure and so innocent it takes his breath away.
Eva and Deuce’s paths cross at regular intervals throughout the years…..the first time when Eva is 12 Deuce: “You’re a good kid darlin’, a good sweet kid. Promise me you’ll always stay that way, yeah? No matter what sort of f***ed up shit happens to you. Don’t let life turn you sour”
Gitte: The crossing of Eva and Deuce’s paths is what had me hooked…I was frantically reading so I could find out what happened next time they met up. It is why I could not put this book down. I needed to know if Eva was going to change, what was going to happen to her. If Deuce was okay and whether they would stand the test of time and the difference in their ages, as well as stand up to and fight the world they lived in.
Jenny: This story is raw, gritty and at times very disturbing. It is full of flawed characters; some insanely damaged who possess some very questionable, if no morals where violence is a way of life. They function, at best, in this imperfect world they live in where they live by their own code and put a big eff you to the world outside the compound walls.
Gitte: This whole book is flawed and disturbing with ‘effed up morals. It has violence, rape, adultery and enough swearing to last you a life time….but I loved it. It was a rare and refreshing change. I loved the ugly.
Jenny: Eva and Deuce don’t know any other life. They were born into this life. This life is normal for them…the partying, the killing, the crime, the whoring, the drugs, drink and violence…..it’s pretty much all they know. Deuce has his code. He is set in his ways, yet he loves Eva – but is her love enough to change this man? Eva is in love with Deuce. She has always carried a torch for him since she was a child, can she accept Deuce the way he is and can she overcome her adversities?
Gitte: I agree Jenny and I have to give kudos to the Author here for not romanticising this world which many do; it was gritty, raw, ugly and pretty damn nasty at times. It felt real.
Jenny: Yes GG it did feel real which is also why it was so disturbing. These two have an invisible rope that pulls them back to one another – they are in love but live in such a f***ed up world that connecting in the first place and keeping that connection when everything around them is going to crap is hard to sustain.
Gitte: Yeah and this made my heart ache for them Jenny because they really were meant to be, no doubt about it, they were soul mates, of the messed up variety!
“I stole you a long time ago. Round the time you fuckin’ stole me.”
Jenny: One thing the author did that I thought was a great idea, was to let you know at the end of each section when Eva and Deuce would reconnect. This definitely added to the drama of the story and increased the angst and anticipation you were already feeling. I can’t begin to explain what these two go through to be together………
Gitte: I think they pretty much lived the life of many, not just their own. What a crazy and heart breaking journey they had. They shouldered more burdens and responsibility of an average person that it is a wonder they came out of it alive and fighting at times. They both need a really good psychologist!
Jenny: One thing I did notice was this book, at times, did have a” feel” of a Kristen Ashley book. The alpha male was very similar in speech etc but other than that it is a very different book. Another point I have to make is the amount of typos/grammar and errors in the book. Being Beta/Proof readers, we can get past this but I know this could be an issue for some readers, though I believe the author may be addressing this.
Gitte: Yep, as a beta reader and proof reader I was stunned at the huge amount of errors in this book which ranged from typos to grammatical errors. I have to say that this Author has an amazing story here; it is addictive and grips you. However, the amount of errors in this book will put people of I am sure. I saw the story first and foremost which is why I gave it 4 stars, however the 2 stars are for how badly edited this book is. I am also going to take a wild guess here and say I think this Author is a Kristen Ashley fan because this book is VERY reminiscent of a KA book. However, there is no comparison and this book should be taken as is.
Jenny: I have to say this book was an angsty roller-coaster ride, with a love story that was as ugly as it was beautiful. This was a book I could not put down – for good or bad, I could not stop reading it. This book will not be for everyone. You are either going to love it or loathe it. I loved it because it gripped me and never let me go.
Gitte: Yeah I agree Jenny, this is a love story set in ugly circumstances and it is definitely a “marmite book”, for sure. You’ll either love it or hate it!...more
