As you know, I wasn't overly impressed with Vampire Academy but I have found Frostbite to fill a bit of a void that I felt was lacking in the first book.
Frostbite focuses more on Rose's training as a guardian as well as her relationship with Dimitri. Some of the holes in the first book are filled in here also so it rather tied up some loose ends for me. There has been a Strigoi attack on one of the larger royal families so the Academy dismisses its students to the ski slopes for the Christmas holidays where everyone will be safe. While there, another attack takes place and some of the novice guardian students and royals decide to take matters into their own hands. Will anyone receive their molnija marks before graduation? Can they handle this large task on their own? What powers manifest in these novice students? Guess you'll have to read to find out!! On to Shadow Kissed now!
This book is a part of my "Thankfully Reading Weekend" and also the Christmas Challenge! ...more

If the pack gets involved, it won't be a good outcome for Samuel! While trying to protect Samuel, Mercy ticks off a TV producer and ends up in a heap of trouble herself. In the process, she takes Gabriel down with her (not purposely). Can her mate bond with Adam be enough to save her and Samuel?
In this book, the reader learns more of the bonds of a wolf pack. The ins and outs. How they communicate with the Alpha and the Marrock. The reader also learns more about the Fae and how they operate.

In Shadow Kiss, the reader finds out even more about Rose and Dimitri's lives as guardians. I was glad to see the relationships of the characters develop a little further. I felt like after reading this book that I could "know" the characters now. This one picks up right where Frostbite left off so there is no loss if reading them back to back. One thing that irritated me about this series is the repetition of the different roles (Moroi, Dhampirs, Strogoi, etc). I feel that if someone has bothered to read into the third book that these roles should already be defined. I would have to say the same about the reintroduction of many of the characters. Maybe it's just me but it's one of those things that annoyed me.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The ending did not surprise me and I'm a little excited to see where this story will go in Blood Promise. My daughter is currently reading that one and I'll snag it from her as soon as I can.
I was recommended these books by a student of mine, Mindi.
This book completes my Thankfully Reading Weekend as I cannot fit in another book tonight! :)...more

It was perfect timing on behalf of Stephenie Meyer to write and release this book. It does explain things through a different set of eyes and makes me a little more sympathetic to Bree's plight. I would have now hoped for a better ending for her. She takes it all in stride though and is a very honorable vampire newborn. I sensed a tenderness in her even though she was a very vile creation. Reading this book also helped me to see just how evil Victoria really is and how much more I really don't like Jane.
I am really looking forward to the release of Eclipse and even more so for Breaking Dawn. I just don't want it all to ever end, which inevitably, it must.
I would like to once again thank my students (especially Mindi) for encouraging me to read this series and once again renew my love for reading. Had it not been for the combination, this blog would not be in existence and I would be spending my time doing something totally boring, I'm sure. ...more

Things are going well for her and Damen and they have a great date planned to "finalize" some things. This comes about after all the skipping school and traveling to Summerland as often as possible.
The night of the great date, a new guy, Roman, appears on the scene...and Damen disappears. Where'd he go? He as just going to get the car!
Needless to say, Ever doesn't see him all weekend and school on Monday is definitely not what she expected. Will things ever go back to "normal"?
As a follow-up of Evermore, this book puts more focus on Damen and his life as an immortal.
I look forward to reading Shadowland, the next book in The Immortals series. It is due out Feb. 2010. In the meantime, I'm going to take a bit of a break from the paranormals for awhile......more

It's a little frustrating though because it seems like takes forever to find out what the whole deal with Damen is (don't worry, it's worth the wait).
Ever is a young teen who lost her family in a car accident. She goes to live with her aunt Sabine, who is rarely if ever home. Ever doesn't fit into her new school too well. She does find too people who she enjoys spending her time with though, Haven and Miles.
When I first started reading this book, I thought it was another vampire book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's about different paranormal creatures!!
What I love most about this book is the author's choice of names for the characters...Ever, Damen, Haven, Miles, Sabine (my personal favorite), Drina, Riley. They are so unique and different from most character names that I've been reading about lately. I appreciate the time that alyson noel took to make some really great and creative characters!!...more

This is the fifth book inDestiny's sister Leah is missing. What ever in the world will she do? If anyone learns of her powers, there could be trouble!
This is the fifth book in Melissa Mayhue's Daughters of Glen series. I have not read any of her other books and I didn't feel like I was missing anything by reading this one. Looking back at some other reviews, some of the characters appear in earlier books but never in "main character form".
Destiny needs help finding her sister and this tall, beautiful man falls into her lap, or rather she onto the back of his motorcycle. Her world is a whirlwind of travels and learning more about her rescuer, Jesse. He's a Guardian Fae who knows that the people behind Leah's disappearance are bad news.
This book has some of the most beautiful descriptive scenery. I wish I could find a portal and escape there right now...with Jesse of course! This is a paranormal, highlander romance full of fae and vamps. What could possibly go wrong with these two mystical groups working their own magics in the world?!
Moreover, will Destiny ever see Leah again? Will Jesse break a company policy? Read this great book for a wonderful adventure of mystical love and devotion.
You might want to be aware that there are a couple of "racy" romance scenes (sex included) and the language is fairly strong at times.

It's his blood that allows for the Collectors to come for many years afterward.
Gina is a young girl who can't understand why her mom cuts her all the time. I thought Nikki was a little neurotic myself and she's not the kind of mom I would want!!
What made this book so interesting is that it's a "Christian vampire" novel. Seems a little oxymoronic! Eric Wilson does a great job of depicting the scenes between Romania and the United States. I loved the rich history described in the book.
These are not your "normal" vampires. I love their method of feeding! It's a bit unique, but not one that I would want to be subject to!
One of my hangups with this book is that I think I got a little to caught up in the symbolism. I am also not a fan of books or movies that switch back and forth from present day to the future, back to the past, and so on. I have a hard time keeping it all straight!!
Character-wise, I HATED Nikki...she's purely evil. I had hoped she'd get her pay back before the book was over. My favorite character is Cal. He's just so mysterious and I hope to see him again in Haunt of the Jackals.
I would give this book an overall 4.5 stars. I will be starting the sequel as soon as I whittle down a few other books for tours this month.

The first creatures to seek me were the insects; my parents cleaned the bassinet free of dead ants the morning after they brought me home from the hospital. My first word was “dead.”
At age four, when I stepped out of bed and popped a giant toad like a water balloon, I never again turned any lights off.
For all of my sixth year, I slept sitting up thinking I’d spot the dying coming toward me.
There were times when it felt like my insides were full of broken glass, times when the souls of the animals passing through me felt too big, too much. I’d open my eyes in the morning and peer into the glassy gaze of a mouse on my pillow. Death never became my comfortable companion.
With a book opening like that, how can this NOT be a good book to read?!?!? I was captivated from those opening lines and finished the book in record time. If you would like to read more of Meridian, please click here and you can read the prologue and first three chapters. I'm warning you though, be prepared to go and get it as soon as you do!
Meridian is a young girl with a very eccentric life. Things die around her. All. The. Time. It doesn't happen to anyone else though and she's concerned. The day of her 16th birthday changed her life forever. Her parents warn her to come straight home from school. What will happen if she doesn't? Should she even take the chance and find out? Why won't her parents give her more information? She already senses she's a freak and out of the norm and now her parents are "wigging her out".
Meridian finds herself on a bus to go see her Aunt. She's always enjoyed spending time with her and felt a special kinship with her. They are more alike than Meridian would have ever cared to guess. Then, there's Tens, her aunt's caretaker. Meridian seems to take a liking to him fairly quickly but he isn't so eager to return the sentiment.
This book is full of the adventures of our young Meridian and her half angel life. Along the way she meets some interesting folks who help to shape her into the young lady she becomes.
Don't just take my word for it though!! Other bloggers have a few things to say too, including interviews with our featured author, Amber Kizer. Check them out!

My students kept telling me that I would love the book...especially Edwart's character. It didn't take me long to see why they thought that! I found out that Edwart was a man after my own heart...a germaphobe!! The only difference between Edwart and I is that I despise Purell. The stuff doesn't work people!!! My students test it every year in lab and prove that it doesn't work so save your money!
Ahem...so I need to get back on topic...
I loved this book for the first 100 pages. After that, it just got stupid in my opinion. I mean, why ruin the end of the book? They could have just stopped at page 100 and been done with it but they had to pervert the story to the point of boredom. There were many great scenes and lines (most in my opinion revolved around Edwart and the Purell)but my overall impression is that this book was just ok.

I wonder how much my perception of this book was altered by the announcement that it was being made into a movie that Miley Cyrus would star in?!?! I really think that may have tainted my thoughts on this book as I was reading it.
I have to give it to LisA McMann, this book is an original paranormal. I've not read anything like it before. The whole 'getting into someone's dream' is something that my husband has had an interest in. So far, he's been successful at changing the outcome of the dream one time (that he's told me). Cabel seemed like a real dirt bag until you find out what he really is. I wasn't feeling him for the longest time!
I'm sure the younger set will enjoy this more than I did. I will be reading Gone next though...just to see what does happen! ...more

All I caI was given this book by a student of mine, Mindi, to read. She knows that I love a good paranormal novel and thought I might enjoy this one. All I can say is that this book is "just alright". I wasn't dying to pick it up after I had to put it down to take care of the kids or whatever I had to do. I found the storyline between Lissa and Rose to be a little boring, and worse than that, the storyline between Rose and Dmitri. I thought with a name like Dmitri that I would experience a little more action in this book than was provided. I am trying REALLY hard not to compare this to other paranormal books that I have read. It just didn't have the substance that others do that I have really enjoyed.
If this were to be made into a movie, I would hope that Angelica Houston could play Queen Tatiana. I just see her in that role for some reason!!
I am starting Frostbite now with the hopes that the series gets a little better!...more
