Firstly, there was the death of her father and then the mystery behind the death of her boyfriend, Peter Marx. One night, while out on a date that quickly turns nasty, Lily shapeshifts for the first time, which sees her flee from the police and from a mysterious person who seems to be following her.
Lily's character really grew on me. At first she seemed a little lost and uncomfortable in her own skin but as the story progressed she matured and grew stronger as a person and for me this is when the story really picked up. It's no secret that I am a fan of strong female protagonists. I loved how Lily embraced her shapeshifting abilities and her chinese heritage. It was so refreshing to read. I loved her in all her forms as well. I enjoyed the interactions between Lily and her brother Seth. Although Lily seems to be the stronger of the two, Seth really comes into his own. I loved his humour the most. Detective sexy or should I say Caldwell Sims, brought sexy back. I loved his protective nature of Lily and the little moments he had with her. The only problem I had was there needed to be more.
First Born is a fast paced action, urban fantasy thriller, that I could not put down. It's a great mix of humour, suspense, mystery and intrigue that keeps you turning the page. The way Zoeller wrote kept the book flowing and really suited the pace of the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good Shifter book but also to anyone who enjoys unique spins on traditional supernatural stories.(less)

Dare You To is the companion novel to Pushing the Limits, however in this story we follow Beth and Ryan. It is an intense and sometimes frustrating story, told in alternating views.
When we met Beth in Pushing the Limits, she is fiercely protective and devoted to her friends and she is extremely guarded with people she doesn't know. From the outside looking in, it appears she is a bitch with an attitude however we had a taste of the life she was living in Pushing the Limits, and it comes as no surprise that her personal life is full of trouble, violence and lacking any sort of real love. Her mother is a drug addict/alcoholic and her mothers boyfriend is violent and likes to use Beth and her mom as punching bags. Beth has felt like she has been let down by just about everyone she knows. She has no sense of family and her mother is the only person she has, even though she is the one the acts like the adult. Isaiah, who we met in Pushing the Limits, is the only stable thing she has right now.
We also meet Ryan Stone who appears to be your resident jock. He is the kinda guy that does not like to come second. He is the shit when it comes to baseball and his friends, who are also his team mates rely heavily on him to get through the game. Ryan, lives and breaths baseball, he comes off as an easy going, smart, confident and sexy as hell guy but behind the facade, Ryan has his own issues he has to contend with. His home life has been thrown into disarray since his brother announced he was gay. Ryan has no problem with his brother being gay. His problem is he feels like his brother left him behind to deal with the fall out with their parents. On top of this he is under pressure from his father to go pro-baseball but Ryan is unsure this is what he wants to do and it's putting a strain on his relationship with his dad.
The one thing I loved about this book is that Beth didn't end up with Isaiah. It would have been to predictable. Not that I don't love him it's just that Beth isn't the girl for him. The girl that only hooks up with you when their wasted isn't someone you would want to spend your life with. And that's what Beth was doing to him in a way. Also I love Ryan. I love everything about him. The baseball, the way he always wears his cap and those kisses. Gahh I want him now now now! The chemistry he has with Beth is electric and I would have to say it was all because of Ryan. He is the type of character that left you wanting more. Beth was frustrating at times and It annoyed me that she kept going back to her moms but I guess that was all part of the mindset that Beth was in.
Katie has done a wonderful job in telling the story. She captures each moment perfectly and makes you feel every moment that each character goes through. This contemporary novel has it all, romance, drama and dares :)
Definitely would recommend if you loved Pushing the Limits but also to any reader who enjoys a moving and heartbreakingly good story.(less)

I haven't really come across novels with the same concept so when I received my review copy (Thank you Cambria!) I jumped at the chance to read it. And I am glad I did. It was a real gem of a book, so lets get into it.
Firstly, the cover is just AMAZEBALLS. It is what you want in a cover. It instantly draws people in but doesn't give away too much of the plot that it makes people curious to read it. Recalled is told in alternating point of views. One view is of the male character, Dex and the other is the female character, Piper. Dex has had to make it on his own for most of his life. He comes from a broken family and lived on the streets. Ever since he was a child he has always said that he was going to hell, then one day a chance encounter and quick decision to save someone he doesn't know has seen his life been taken. However this is not the last we see of Dex. This is where things start to get tricky. Dex is given an ultimatum. Become a death escort, where you can have a new car, house and lots of money or go straight to hell. That doesn't sound so bad right? well there is one slight catch, he has to kill the girl that he saved. This is where we get to know Piper. Piper is a passionate and hard working girl who has a secret of her own, she has visions of the future. She felt a real connection to the stranger that saved her and was driven to honour and thank him some how for saving her life. When Piper has a chance encounter with Dex, she has an instant vision which links him to the stranger that saved her but she wonders how can it be when that person has already died. Piper is instantly intrigued and attracted to him.
I really enjoyed the inner conflict that Dex had when it came to his job and his love for Piper. I really enjoyed reading the scenes where he came up with different ways to try kill Piper and then quickly changed his mind. It really showed he wasn't quite cut out for a death escorts job! One thing I felt was missing is that we needed to know more about how and why Piper has visions. It wasn't quite explained in the book but I don't think it really took anything away from the book. I should also mentioned the secondary characters. I think G.R., Frankie and Hobbs did a great job in keeping the story fun and interesting. They kept the main characters in check most of the time.
It's sad to say that we won't see what happens next for Dex and Piper as each book is stand alone in the series, but good news is we get to meet new people and I am sure it will be just as great as the first.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun and entertaining read with lots of action and romance!(less)

Here is about a girl named Milo Mitchell. Her dad passed away two years ago and ever since than she has sort of felt like she is looking from the outside in. She still hasn't really gotten over the loss and somethings tend to trigger off her emotions. While she is out tracking Deer a freakish storm hits and as she darts one of the Deer she accidentally misses and hits a guy dressed in a tux! When Milo rushes to speak with him she realises that he doesn't remember a thing and whether it is guilt or pure attraction, she sets out to help him.
Milo is such a sweet character. She is not your typical girl. She has issues but she is also passionate, loyal and strong. She is easily relatable. At times she does seem to make irrational decisions but who wouldn't when you want a little adventure in your life. Nick (as Milo has named him) really keeps you guessing. We don't really know what or who he is. He has little memory but some how has a connection with Milo. The plot thickens when we find out that 'Nick' is really Gabe, who has been missing after his family was in a car accident. After it appears that Gabe is the only survivor he leaves Milo to go be with his grandmother.
Things start to get really intense when the Department of Defence show up at Milo's house, investigating the freak storm surge that happened the day Milo found Nick. Milo mentions nothing however the agents just don't get away and then Nick and Milo find themselves on the run.
Now I have to admit that I didn't read the book blurb before I read this book. Sometimes I like to leave it a mystery about what is going happen. I am glad I did, the whole time I sat there guessing 'what' Nick was! I truly was coming up with all sorts of suggestions. The plot starts off slow but James does an incredible job of building the mystery and action as the story progresses. The only slight problem was it did get confusing when the story switched point of views. I wasn't too sure who was narrating at times, however I did enjoy Nick/Gabes PoV so I hope we see more of it in the next instalment.
As usual we are left with a cliffhanger ending which leaves you wanting more! It is a fantastic start to this wonderful series. Make sure you check it out!(less)

This book is definitely one of the best books that I have ever read this year maybe in my whole lifetime. Yes, I am seriously making this bold statement and we are only in March. I would even have to say that it trumped The Immortal Rules , which was book 1 in the series.
The Eternity Cure picks up four months after Allison Sekemoto had left Zeke and friends at vampire-free Eden. There wasn't a place for her in Eden so after being forced out she went on the road to search for her sire, Kanin. Allie knows that Kanin is still alive through her dreams she stays connected with him but he his barely hanging on to his sanity as he is tortured at the hands of Sarren. On her journey she comes across Jackal, her vampire blood brother who had cruelly attacked and murdered her friends, however instead of seeking revenge she forms an unlikely alliance with him. With the Red Lung virus gripping the country, can Allie find Kanin in time?
Where do I start....Julie Kagawa hands down has done some of her best work in this book. Everything from the plot, characters and imagery that she created was AMAZEBALLS. I could not fault her one bit. For me, I usually find first books in series hard to beat. It's where we meet and fall in love with new friends, and we build a real connection with the characters. However, The Eternity Cure has given me hope for new series out there. The combination of vampire and dystopian genres is a real winner for me. I mean, what more could you ask for :)
Allie, Allie, Allie...so much has changed since she left Eden. In the first book, she is conflicted with her raw nature and the humanity that still remains. This time we see more of the vampire side of Allie and boy is she a force to be reckon with. She kills to feed and also in self defence but in saying this she's not heartless. She still has a lot of her humanity which stops her from in turning into the monster she could be. Her loyalty to Kanin drives her to find her maker and it is also what makes her join forces with her blood brother, Jackal. The unlikely alliance would drive her mad as he knew just how to push her buttons. However, they both had their own agendas and no matter how frustrating it was for them, they continued on together.
And if things couldn't get anymore confusing for Allie, Zeke comes along. Zeke is the same old person we got to know in The Immortal Rules. However this time he is motivated by love and revenge, love for Allie and revenge against the person who killed his father., Jackal. His concern and protectiveness of Allie was endearing at times. His relationship with Allie was really sweet, you felt the love between them and even though Allie is a vampire she still felt the same feelings any human girl would feel when they were in love.
My two favourite characters were Kanin and Jackal. Kanin was my favourite in the first book although he wasn't in it for most of it. There is just something about Kanin that instantly draws you to him. I so can't wait to learn more about him and I hope Julie will do a novella from Kanin's point of view. Jackal brought the humour to the story. His smart arse comments made me laugh and sometimes you didn't know whether to love him or hate him. I hope his character stays around for a long time.
Overall, this book was nothing but first class action. It has everything you would want in a story, romance, fast paced action and fantastic characters. You seriously won't be able to put the book down. The ending is absolutely pure brilliance and evil at the same time, although I must say it was kinda predictable.
I could not fault this book and It would have to be the best vampire series out at the moment.

And when I hea...moreJust putting it out there that one of my all time favourite movies is The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I know all the words to all songs! And when I heard that Lorraine was writing a story that was inspired by such movies as this and Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Cabaret I practically jumped in my seat. I love my musicals. Just the whole vibe is different to your standard movie. Now a contemporary romance novel where the male protagonist is risky business. In a world where 'mummy porn' has become mainstream, the male protagonists are men who are dominant, in and out of the bed. A drag queen could seem too feminine for a reader to relate. The opening line in the summary lays it bare for the reader... "Come forth with an open mind, for an unconventional tale of love.. ". This is definitely not your typical romance...I mean it is about a girl falling in love with a man who has a dark secret (and no he doesn't have a red room of pain!) but it is also about a journey of self discovery and learning how to love and be loved despite what you look like or who you are.
So a little about the characters. Freda or 'Fred' as she is called by her friends, is an Irish girl who uses her with to compensate for her low self esteem. She is what you would call 'chubby' (nothing wrong with chubby!) but all through high school and through her adult life she has always sort of been invisible. She is not societies typical beauty but there is something about Fred that catches Nicholas a.k.a Vivica Blue's eye. From the moment they met, Fred had made Nicholas laugh. Viv, as he is affectionately called by Fred, has had a rough life. He has highs and way to many lows and when he moves to Dublin he sees it as a chance to clean himself up. Nicholas is the type of guy that can get any girl he wants. He has dark hair, tall and has impeccable style. And a big plus for me is he is from New Zealand.That's right, he is a Kiwi just like me! He's already won in my book! Apart from all the glitz and the glam Nicholas is hiding a secret and it is making him miserable and lonely. There is one line in the novel that sums Nicholas up and how Fred sees the situation she is in:
"He really is a beautiful mess. A beautiful mess that sucks you in and messes you up too. If i fly too close to the sun, I can't exactly expect anything other than to get burned."
I really liked the two main characters. I found them to be real, vulnerable and really relatable. I get the body image issues and I get putting yourself out there to someone that you love and not knowing if they return the same feelings. We have all been through the emotions that we find the characters go through, and this is what sets this story apart from others.WE ALL GET IT! Now as I said Nicholas isn't your typical male protagonist in a contemporary romance however he still has the same sort of dominant characteristics that most male romance novel characters have. So although he may dress in woman's clothing he still has that charm and charisma that instantly draws you in. And because the characters were real, the romance felt real. It wasn't an instant love that you might read in another novel. It felt like two people becoming friends and falling in love once they got to know the good and the bad about each other. Doesn't that sound normal? The friendly banter between the two made it really enjoyable to read. There is a great scene when they are in the hotel and Fred says to Nicholas:
" A one bedroom suite in the fanciest hotel going, business class plane tickets. Need I say more? Better women would be naked and spreading their legs for you as we speak . It's a good thing I'm not materialistic."
This book was so well written from start to finish it was so hard to put down. From the plot, to the characters and the general flow of the story, I would have to say this is my favourite book so far that Cosway has written. Well done for writing a novel that is 'unconventional' ! Although this was a stand alone novel, I didn't feel like there were any questions left unanswered and there was no dramatic ending. It was just right =)
I highly recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read something with a refreshing twist to your classic romance.

Under the Desert Moon by Emma Meade didn't disappoint. It is your classic vampire-teen romance. You have a small country town girl (Erin) and the handsome and charismatic guy who has a secret (James). One of the things that sets this story out is its choice of scenery. I love the idea of stories set in deserts. It has this old \-world feel to it. At first I was like 'how is a vampire going to survive in a desert' but James is sort of like your typical vampire who actually sleeps during the day and doesn't come out in the sun (No he doesn't sparkle or has a magic ring!). The whole time I was reading this book it reminded me of the tv show Roswell.
I really liked Erin. She's a typical teenage girl who is bored of being in a small town. Her aim is to get her and her twin brother Nick out of there as soon as high school is finished. Away of their alcoholic father and the crazy and annoying girls at school. Erin seems down to earth, trusting and naive in some instances. She has a love of photography, which is how she scores a job on set. I would have to say just about every book I read the main female has some sort of skill such as photography, drawing or even blogging...Not that there is anything wrong with that. James is your typical handsome male lead. He has amazing eyes...shocking! Another common theme in YA novels is that the males all have amazing coloured eyes! The attraction between Erin and James is almost instant. Erin tried her best to resist but seriously how can you not be curious about a guy like James. He would have any girl melting just with one look. It did at first bug me at how easy it was for her to look past the fact that James was a vampire but as you kept reading you did see how it did play on her mind a bit. The secondary characters all had their part in the story. The only one that really stood out for me was probably Erin's twin brother Nick. He had this whole protective guy thing happening and also had is own love story playing out.
Overall, this is a fun read. Its short so its definitely a book that you could read in one sitting (well if you read like me) If you are into your vampire reads and after something a bit light and not to heavy on the whole teenage drama than this is your pick.

Once I got my hands on this book I couldn't wait to get started! I just fell in love with the fantasy world that L.H Cosway created in A Strange Fire, book one in the Florence Vaine Trilogy. When we first met Flo she was shy, had low self esteem but she was also kind, caring and very unique. Flo is an empath who can not only see emotions but manipulate the negative emotions away.
A Vision of Green starts off where A Strange Fire ended. Now that Diana and her nasty crew of witches have been destroyed, things can start to go back to 'normal' in Chesterport. The relationship between Frank and Flo has started to heat up and Flo is unsure if she is willing to take the next step with Frank even though she feels like Frank and her are definitely soul mates. Also back in town is Flo's drug and alcohol addicted abusive father. Flo appears to be conflicted with her emotions. She feels no love for her father but she still doesn't want any harm to come to him. With Flo's new found confidence she thinks that she is able to stand up to her father but she learns quickly that some things never change. On top of all this, Flo is feeling a strange pull towards the haunted forest and has seen mysterious creatures lurking in the trees.
WOW, ok lets catch our breath!
If you thought there was a lot of drama in the first novel you will be excited to see that there is more of it in book two! One of the highlights of this book is the way that the story flows. Cosway has brought the forest alive with her wonderful story telling. We get a bit of urban fantasy, paranormal and mythology all in one. The way that the characters have developed cemented this story as one of my favs for 2012. It felt like catching up with old friends again. I loved how Alex is so snarky, how Josh starts to come out of his shell (well kind of!) and how Caroline looks after Flo as well as holds her own against Alex. Most of all I loved the chemistry and the sexiness that is Flo and Frank. Who would have thought Frank could be so naughty. Though I guess he is a teenage boy! Frank knows what he wants and he will do anything to get it. Flo and Frank just seem to balance each other. They both know what turns the other one on and they both know when the other one is going through a hard time. A touch from Flo can do wonders for Frank and the same goes for Flo. It's the type of relationship that we all crave and all dream about.

On top of all the love in this story there were also some heartbreaking moments. Firstly when Flo tells Frank she wants some space and no longer wants to be in a relationship. Now Frank seem to take this pretty well but I felt myself deflate slightly when this happened *sigh*. Secondly, when Franks foster dad John is attacked and killed by some seriously crazy ass demon creature and we see Frank freak out and his demon literally comes out of him to fight. This is one side of Frank we don't really get to see and it's scary. And the most shocking moment in the book is when Flo's dad finally loses it and beats Flo after an altercation at Flo's school. It is a very confronting moment in the book and I would have to say more scary than any of the demons that feature in the book. I was so hoping Frank or Sam busts in at that very moment and lays the smack down on her dad but sadly that didn't happen.

Now we also meet some nasty creatures that would scare the beejeebers out of anyone. A whole bunch of mythical creatures are waiting just to pounce on the innocent people of Chesterport and amongst them is Green George who sort of governs them all. Now Green George is probably the only character where I felt sort of lacked something. For me he just wasn't menacing enough however I believe he has the potential to be very very scary. Its always the silent types that you have to look out for. We do however learn some interesting information from Green George, about where Flo gets her empath abilities from so hopefully we will get to see more of Green George and we get to explore his dark side more in book 3.
I could go on and on about this book but then I would be up way past my bed time. Lets just say this book is all about love, heartbreak, and about growing and finding yourself. If you haven't read the first book A Strange Fire, I suggest you do so right now and while you are at it grab yourself a copy of A Vision of Green.

I didn't really know what to expect from this book. As usual I was a bit hesitant reading a book that didn't have a vampire or angel in sight but after reading such good reviews about it, I just had to pick up a book and read it. I thought it was going to be some sort of medieval adventure story but to my surprise there was a paranormal element to the story. At the time I read the novel I wasn't aware that there were a bunch of novellas that lead up to the full length novel. The novellas followed Celaena Sardothien, who is the most feared assassin in Ardalan.
Throne of Glass picks up with Celaena locked away in Endovier Salt Mines. While locked away she is paid a visit by the Prince of Ardalan, Dorian who has a proposal for her. Dorian has chosen Celaena to be her champion and fight in a competition to become the Kings champion. If she wins she will gain her freedom which out weighs all her doubts about facing the King as well as the other assassins.
Even though I didn't read the novellas I felt I didn't have too. Sarah J. Maas has done an amazing job of drawing the reader into her magical world. I loved how the plot kept developing the more you read. It was so easy for me to imagine this perfectly visual world and for me this is a huge plus as I am not so big on the visual part of books, I just want to get straight into the romance and action. Maas has also given us some amazing and strong characters. Each of the characters brought something to the plate and had amazing moments throughout the book. Celaena is a strong female character that I admire. She's tough, smart, tenacious, beautiful, vulnerable and she is resilient. I love her attitude! She know she's got the goods and she aint afraid to say it. Each relationship she has in the novel is great to read. The developing relationship with Dorian is exciting and forbidden. He is definitely not what I thought he would be like. He is quite surprising. The romance in the book heats up when a love triangle develops. Not only does Dorian fall in love with Celaena but the Captain of the Royal guard, Chaol Westfall, who is Celaena's trainer, also develops feelings for Celaena. Chaol is tough on Celaena, you could say he was showing her some tough love (and not in that way!). He needed Celaena to be focused and keep her eye on the competition. She sees the way Dorian looks at her and knows this relationship won't go down well with the King. He is protective of Celaena but also afraid of her (especially in the beginning). However behind all the bravado he really sees Celaena for who she is. For me, my favourite is Dorian. He is swoon worthy! for some reason I imagined Chaol to be a lot older than Celaena. I knew that he was only suppose to be young but I always imagined someone older.
This has to be one epic fantasy novel and I can so see this book being made into a movie (imagine the costumes). Maas mentioned on her blog that the story of Cinderella influenced her ideas behind the novel. So instead of Cinderella going to the ball to find her prince, what we get is a Cinderella-badass-assasin going to the ball to kill the prince. This alone should make you want to read this!
Maas has so much to work with for the next novel which is due to be released in 2013. This is one book which I will eagerly be awaiting.(less)

It is a unique mix of Angel verse Demons with romance thrown into it. It's very hard in this day and age to find something so unique when YA paranormal is such a popular genre.
Higgins sets her story in a wonderful and captivating world. She builds her characters from angel mythology. In the world we have guardian angels as well Dukes who are demons who control different types of Sin. And this is where Anna Whitt comes into the story. Anna is a first for her kind, she is part angel and part demon. She is Nephlim, the result of a forbidden relationship between her mother who was a guardian Angel and her father, Belial, the Duke of Addiction.
Anna as a character is just plain nice. She is sweetness all rolled into one. Anna is your typical female protagonist. She is odd, doesn't have many friends and she is full of high morals. However underlying all this is a darkness which she can't quite explain until she meets the charming Kaidan Rowe (pronounce 'Ky-dan'). Kaidan is your typical bad boy. He is also nephlim, his father is the Duke of Lust so his job is to pursue young innocent woman and get them to have sex with him. Kaidan is so "HOTT" it's hard not to fall in love with him. He is every girls dream. He is a drummer in a band, mega rich, drives nice cars and he's English!!! YUM! Kaidan has been doing his dads dirty work for quite some time now so when he meets Anna he is instantly attracted to her. Even though he doesn't normally "do neph" he can't help but be drawn to her. And the same goes for Anna. She's driven to find out more about herself but she can't quite help but be intrigued with Kaidan. The chemistry between them is unreal. It's what really made this book for me. The romance so forbidden in both eyes yet they can't quite keep their hands of each other. It's a real tug of war with their feelings through out the whole book.
The rest of the characters are phenomenal. They are an odd mix of characters that really work. We have Patti, the overprotective adoptive mother of Anna, Belial, Anna's Duke dad that you just don't want to mess with. Not to mention her loveable friend Jay. We also meet some other nephlim including Kopano who takes an interest in Anna.
I read somewhere about this book being described as 'seductively sweet' and this is exactly how I feel about it. It's a great debut for Wendy Higgins and it certainly has got me all excited for the next instalment. My only warning is that this book is dangerously addictive.(less)
