Short stories about people having a machine telling them the method in which they die? Interesting. That those revelations are vague and not specific, even more interesting.. However, that build up in my mind was about the best thing from the book. There were a few stories that stood out to me, but most of them kind of just fell flat to me. The story would craft the set up and build up to some reveal only to have it end with no pay off or this is what happens. I almost wanted to stop reading at certain points but made myself finish since I had invested the time already. I'm not sure if I will end up reading the next book, but part of me wants to so that I find out if any of the stories are better than the ones in this book.
If I was an author that submitted my story to the book and it didn't make the cut and a story that was simply one line "HIV from infected Death Machine Needle." made it in, I'd be pretty upset. Still, there were a few stand out stories, Almond was interesting with its journal entries telling a story from the perspective of a scientist testing the machine to Starvation which made me feel a bit anxious for the subject of the story. Most of them, sadly, just did not work for me and the writing was difficult at times.(less)

I really enjoyed the first book and can't believe that the book is marketed towards young adults. Sure, it isn't overly gory or brutal, but it still does revolve around a game where children kill each other. I'm even more wondering how the movie is going to fair.
Overall the book was very good. The writing and the story were engaging, I found myself caring about what happened to a number of the characters. Sure, the ending was a given, but there was enough of a twist to it to make it a little surprising. The undercurrent of anti-war and anti-government as controlling oppressor was subtle and did not detract from the story at all. (less)
