He has had some challenges but overall a pretty easy life (his life is so fantastic that he did not realize for years he has a wonky eye and apparently he is considered short). So this book is really for people who like pop culture and somewhat trashy pop culture, not for people wanting something inspirational. He is really funny and really likeable. I have this on ILL, so if you are "in the system" and want to borrow it, lemme know.(less)

I listened to most of this in the car around town. It was a nice break from holiday stress and horrible news. I enjoyed most the stories about her life events growing up, getting married, having a baby etc and less so the stories about "look how weird I am".(less)

Not enough interesting bits. I am glad I listened to the whole things because I really preferred the stuff at the end. I would read an article by Moran but an entire book was a bit much at one time. Thank you to Megan for "lending" it to me. I have all the CDs burned if anyone wants them.(less)

Also I let myself go for the ride intended by the author. I did not try and figure out what was going to happen next. I enjoyed all the red herrings and references to pop culture/sensationalized murder trials. I agree the first 3/4 of the book is strongest and that the plot is convoluted and delicate near the end. But it is still wonderfully constructed and entertaining. This would be my suggestion for a beach read and it was a nice break for me.(less)

It was an audio book so, my standards are lower because I also have to concentrate on driving. This was read by the author and she did a pretty good job. At first it took a little getting used to. Also I would like to not hear the word UNPOSSIBLE ever again. It is not really a word, so I would just not like to hear it. It was in there as teen-speak, it just grated on my nerves. I hope that future Alice will make up better more interesting non-word words. (less)

I listened to the entire thing on audio. I really like books that have different readers. The book is wonderfully crafted and very heartbreaking. It accurately portrays a time in which many of the characters tried to make sense out of things that are borne out of hate. I love the last 2 chapters in which love and hope prevail. (less)

It was like a radio serial and an old friend at the same time. I will miss listening to it in the car. I liked this story much better than I thought I would. I am not sure I would have the patience to read it, so listening to it really made a difference. It was also nice to have different readers for the different parts. I think Kathryn Stockett did a great job at presenting a difficult time in history without making it feel like someone did a lot of research. I guess it helps that the it is a narrative focused on narratives. I think a good alternative title would have been "The Toilet". Har!

Things I liked: -I could relate to parts of her life to the point that she articulated very well things I have always felt. -Things that a can articulate, I appreciated her spin on (like competitive motherhood, working moms, etc) -she used the phrase "suck a bag of dicks".
Things I did not like: -Mumbling after some statements in the style of pharmaceutical commercial' side effects representing her parenthetical thoughts. This was supposed to be funny, but only if you could understand what she was mumbling quickly and quietly...which was never. -I also did not like her apologizing/ explaining her portrayal of Sarah Palin. This is such a female comic thing to do (like Sarah Silversteins book---basically she was a ballsy comic who pulled some punches and now has relegated herself to poop jokes which are funny for less than a minute unless you are 8 years old). Tina has done a lot for women comedians and writers and this kind of takes away from those accomplishments. You are a comedian/ writer. Some people won't like you. It is your job to be funny, they can get over it. I find lots of people unfunny or offensive but I don't need an apology, because it won't matter and it is really not that big of a deal.

My inner Sedaris voice can never compete with his reading. In his latest book the sudio version has a few other readers. Elaine Stritch is delightful. This book is hilarious and disturbing. I heard this was Sedaris' attempt to get into fiction writing. He indeed has a gift for dialogue, although, I am not sure contemporary readers would dig it in a novel form. The dialogue is witty and layer with meaning, it reminds me of Evelyn Waugh or Oscar Wilde. Since all the characters are animals Sedaris can concentrate on dialogue (I heard this in an interview on npr). It is hard to not expect a moral and often there is a final line that sums the story up but it is usually a clever witticism. By using animals Sedaris could take a lot of risks he would not with human characters. It is difficult to see animal behavior so up close and at times grotesquely. It is even more difficult when you realize that we too are animals who have evolved a lot less that we tend to think. I can't wait to see what he does next!(less)

Nothing so dire of course but I think all girls grow up crossing paths with a mean girl and it is interesting how the past not only shapes the future, but also how the future can shape the past. This is author read, she did an ok job but I think I would have preferred a professional, at time her voice was shrill/ nasally/ annoying.(less)

I am not sure I would have read these but it did make for good listening. This was read by the author which is always a bonus! I try to not compare Augusten too much to David Sedaris....BUT on the audio there are times were their voices sound just alike. I also like to think that David Sedaris is darker...but now I am not so sure! I will probably listen to more by him BUT I am not sure I have any interest in actually reading his essays (I am just not that kind of girl...:)(less)

It was suspenseful to the very last minute. The reader on this audio book is also really good. I may even like him more than the actor who portrays Dexter in the Showtime series (Michael C. Hall). I have a feeling the show may not use this plot for the show. I cannot imagine how they would pull it off....(less)
