It's probably very interesting, but not something I want to spend time reading.(less)

Things like "Jane, who was dressed in a yellow shirt with blue jeans and black Keds, with her strawberry blonde hair pulled up in a ponytail, turned to her friend Lucy, who was wearing an orange sweater and long, flowery skirt...." Okay... How about something interesting? The plot was too unbelievable and at times anachronistic. How would people from 1994 know that you can find patent records online? In what kind of economy can you live off of the income generated by a handful of 60 year old coins? The dialogue was forced, and the plot advanced without any conflict, at least until I stopped reading. I found the characters generally uninteresting and uninspired. I can only hope the author keeps trying, and eventually hones the fine art of writing.(less)

The jokes were not funny, the author was trying WAY TOO HARD to be funny, and I just cringed continuously as I was reading. (less)

First, the writing style. I feel like Braunstein is going for something lyrical and light, but he just sounds like he smoked way too much pot, and came up with a lot of stuff that sounded profound and witty while he was completely stoned. On reading it sober, it comes off as insipid and filled with bad puns.
Second, what the hell is this guy trying to say? First he says that we need to find our own guidelines for nutrition. Then he says we need to eat raw fruititarian and fast all the time. I feel like if this guy could photosynthesize, he probably would. You know what? I like to eat food. Hell, I even cook it. I don't feel like that fills my body with crap, quite on the contrary, it keeps me happy and healthy.
Third, why so much OMFG Death Fat narrative? Carnivores aren't necessarily fat, vegans aren't necessarily the epitome of health, and fatness isn't always unhealthy or sinful. I can also do without the ableist assumptions that going vegan is miraculously going to free you of all ailments. And it is a simply terrible idea to encourage people to fast when many women die each year of anorexia.
With a title like Radical Vegetarianism, I was expecting something more along the lines of Making a Killing or The Food Revolution -- something to get me riled up and happy to be a vegan. But no, this book just made me want to claw my eyes out instead of read it.(less)

The movies were equally boring and I could only barely make it through the first one. I never understood how people raved about Tolkien, because he seemed to lack the ability to write a plot.(less)

I expect fiction to be light and fluffy at times, but this is just awful. The conversations between characters are cliche at best, and the internal dialogue and narrative were bland.(less)

I was 150 pages in and Nixon still wasn't president yet. This book is really boring and hard to follow, not to mention there are like 10,000 names brought up in every chapter and it's so hard to remember who's who.(less)

I've been putting it aside for over a month now and dread picking it back up.
The best part was the introduction which gave a great overview of the strike and the backlash that occurred as a result. The book itself, however, was a very in depth blow-by-blow that I was not terribly interested in reading. I am more interested in the overall impact of the event, why it happened, what happened, and what was the result, as opposed to reading about every single march that the students embarked upon, etc.
It's definitely a great book if you want to know about all of the nitty gritty details. Otherwise I'd skip it.(less)
