I was super excited to get a free book, so I started reading it as soon as I received it. I could not put it down if I wanted to...I finished reading it at 2:30am. LOL
From the very first line, I was hooked and was being reeled in! The author has an amazing start to this book that would capture anyone. "I knew without a doubt, I was going to die tonight." See??
The author has a great flow to the entire book, she creates an amazing world. The Old Haven is full of poverty, sickness, and devastation. New Haven is the opposite, it is where the palace is, and the arena. The people from Old Haven are rarely let into New Haven. The King has built a wall and segregated his people. I love that there are Knights, Kings, Princesses, Peasants, and it was during a time with swords and arrows. You learn that throughout the book you do not defy the King (Which Echo does on occasion), or you will be sent to the arena where the prisoners fight to the death.
This is a captivating story of a Princess named Echo (Love this name, so original) she learns more about herself in five weeks than she had her whole life. Echo always feels like she is different, she looks different than her family. She has to always listen to what others tell her to wear and do. She is never happy, and always longing to be a fighter like her sisters.
She falls in a forbidden love with a dreamy guy named Ayden (Also love this name). Ayden is considered a Hunter and lives in Old Haven. He works many jobs to provide for his family since his father is a drunk and his mother is sick. He never had a childhood, so at times he does act like one...but who is to deny him of that?
They develop a relationship dependent on each other and finds out that is exactly what they need. Their love story is full of chemistry, laughter, passion, and determination. I like how immediate it was, no questions asked. They are truly happy with each other and will do anything for it. It is time for them to start thinking about themselves, rather than pleasing everyone else all of the time. But they have to fight for their love and happiness. It seems like everything is against them.
I love how the characters develop in this story, Echo especially. She learns that she is the only one that can decide what is good for her, not even the King. This story is amazing in the layers it has, and it still keeps the story running. It is full of betrayal and secrets...and I know the next book will be even better.
The author describes each character in great precision. You are just thinking of ways to get to know them better. Looking for other perspectives, and side stories...maybe in other upcoming books. I could picture each one clearly in my imagination.
At the end of the book, the author throws some sci-fi in it, and leaves you wanting more. I will definitely be reading Deceiving Destiny coming out in December.
I did not realize that this was the authors first novel...it is truly an amazing feat, I feel like this book was so well developed. I cannot wait to see her work to come.
Thank you again for the amazing read! You always know you have read a great book when you dream about it afterwards....more

After the first two books it was good, but then it was just the same stuff over and over again. Skyla professes her love for Gage, then hates him for some stupid reason. Then she goes to Logan and does the same thing. Then makes up with the other one. Then she goes off to Marshall and grinds him, and Ellis falls in the category somehow. She makes out with three different guys on any given day, how are you supposed to look up to that? Her feelings are always all over the place, I am unable to see how she is a heroine. Every time she comes close to finding something out, then she gets ported into a portion of the war or tunnel or something. Skyla acts all tough, when she really is not. She is supposed to win the war? Someone always saves her, and yet she is supposed to be high and mighty? The story did not progress at all, absolutely no plot. The only reason I am reading this is to see which one she chooses, if any! At the rate we are going we will have twenty books with the same thing over and over. Please do us all a favor and end it soon....more

I love Abbi's writing and I have read all of her books. This one is one of my new favorites!
The characters in this book are some of the same characters from her other books. I adore that she can make so many side stories, its great to read about different perspectives and get to know those characters that weren't the main focus in her other books.
Cage, the womanizer and his destructive behavior goes through a magnificent change in this story. He is always sleeping around, and you know from his childhood that you cannot blame him for acting the way he does. Cage is introduced in the book "Because of Low" and you cannot help but feel sorry for him at the end. Low was the only person he ever loved (but couldn't be faithful towards), and she fell in love with Marcus. Cage had to accept this and just be her best friend. Low found her true love, now it is time for Cage.
Cage has finally fallen for a girl named Eva. He is so adorable when he is protecting her and yummy when he is thinking about her in other ways... :) Cage deserves to be happy, his life has been hard enough, now its time for redemption!
Eva is a country girl that has suffered a loss of her fiance and best friend. She is still getting over the loss, and she is broken beyond repair. Until the bad boy Cage appears, she feels things she thought she never would have again. At the end everyone finds their closure.
This story is full of honesty, love, and passion. I loved that this book was racier than her other ones! It suited the characters to have it written this way.
I hope in her next book we learn that he will be getting married, or maybe as a side story. ^.^ Thank you Abbi for another wonderful read! ...more
If you have not read the three previous books...you need to (Caged, Haunted, and Framed), and why are you still reading this? LOL!! This book was theIf you have not read the three previous books...you need to (Caged, Haunted, and Framed), and why are you still reading this? LOL!! This book was the best in the series so far. I read it non-stop, and couldn't sleep for hours after I finished. My emotions were all over the place, happy, sad, frightened, lustful, frustrated, mournful, excited, etc. The end will leave you panting and wanting more.
This whole series takes you on a journey through Ruby's eyes (the covers of all of the stories). :) By far, in this book she has grown the most. Ruby used to always run from her problems and not face the consequences, but she learned that solves nothing. Ruby is becoming a heroine without even realizing.
Ruby is in a love square, she has three guys after her (Matty, Sean, and Cooper). In the last book, you learn to love Cooper. Cooper to Ruby is her Grounded, down to earth type of guy, her best friend but more, she cannot live without him. Matty is her normal to her not so normal life. Lastly, Sean is her piece of heaven. In this book she chooses and makes it much simpler. Question is...will she change her mind?
The conflicts in the story are from the previous ones, "The Rev." who is a rouge werewolf that Ruby is somehow connected to. She blacks out and sees when he is killing another. Also Scarlet in the story (her werewolf self) poses a threat, and completely takes over Ruby at the end. Ruby must learn to control her other self, they disagree on everything. Even their taste in men. That will be her hardest task to overcome I believe.
You see a different side of Sean in this story. In the previous books he is always bi-polar and really is never around. But his softer side shows and you learn to like him. Giving Cooper a run for his money. Cooper in this book is not around a lot, giving Sean and Ruby lots of "alone time". At times it gets pretty hot (finally), but what is a great romance novel without hotness? :)
Lots of questions are still in the air that need to be answered. Like...who is Gavin and what does he know? And what was Sean saying about Cooper and her before she blacked out?
I cannot wait for the next book. The author just keeps getting better and better! I am excited to read her other books beside this one that she has coming out! Thanks Amber for the great read and I look forward to the next one, and next one, etc....more
*Spoilers* This book was by far the best in the series. Ruby/Scarlet are becoming stronger and smarter. Scarlet teaches her something pretty important*Spoilers* This book was by far the best in the series. Ruby/Scarlet are becoming stronger and smarter. Scarlet teaches her something pretty important in this book...never give up no matter what. I love the little rants they get into Ruby vs. Scarlet. But they are showing that they are not as different as one should suspect. They are slowly becoming the same person with the same desires and emotions. Sean seems like a total annoyance in this book, always barging in wanting answers and seems like he doesn't respect or trust Ruby. Always double guessing her and interrogating her. All he ever has to tell her is bad news and he is all about business in this book. Sean is just always taking what he wants without any remorse...and I can foresee how Peyta can play a big part in that. Now that Sophie is out of the picture....Now he has time for her...what a ass! In the beginning of the series, I loved Sean...but now I am falling more in love with Cooper. I wish that Ruby would succumb to her feelings towards Cooper, she is in total denial. Yes, she loves Sean, but he is so bipolar, and doesn't know when to fight or just let things play out. Not to mention, her "gravity" both weighing her down and keeping her grounded, very much opposite. She will have to choose soon enough. *Please be Cooper!* I cannot wait for the next book. Hopefully Ruby has more time to focus on who she really wants, and who she will have to hurt in the process. Oh...one last thing, I felt robbed on the sex scene...it was like one sentence long. Hopefully the next time she has sex, it won't be a sentence long. I do hope it is with the same person though...I don't think the heroine of any story should be a girl who sleeps around with everyone....more
