In the battle scene, almost every chapter is a change in perspective, and the change is right before something interesting is about to happen, not after, as a result, I almost stopped reading on several occasions. My other major complaint is that certain things were described in great detail, what could often have been said in several paragraphs was stretched into entire pages, additionally, the detail often seemed to repeat itself and was generally repetitive. This description did not just extend to landscape or appearances, it applied to thoughts, someone would often think something that should have been said, then not say it and effectively make the entire thought unnecessary. These thoughts also described everything that went through Kip's head, which were what any normal person would think, so there was no real point in even writing it out. Despite these gripes, I am still looking forward to reading the next book in the series and to reading other works by Weeks.(less)

When I read the first book in the series I thought it was a great start to a new series, a little slow to start, but by the end there was good and constant story movement. When I got to the second book I was disappointed by the lack of story progression at first, but once it got past the whole Jardir back-story thing the book seemed to pick back up and progress with meaning. After I was done with it I was disappointed to see in the excerpt that the next book would have the back story of Inavera, which, no doubt would prattle on for 300 pages and make only one or two connections with the rest of the series. Unfortunately I was not wrong, there was almost no benefit to having it in the book and if it was completely cut out the story would have read the same with no confusion at all.
The long and short of it is that I am tired learning the backstory of every single major and minor character every time a new book comes out. It would make a lot more sense for Brett to make a collection of vinettes with this background information instead of clogging up his books with them.
Another thing that bothered me was that the story barely moved throughout the book, a lot of time was spent going over pointless details that added nothing to the story only filled space in the book. The beginning of the book was a few chapters of Renna and Arlen getting to the Hollow, the rest was back-story. After that there was a bunch of hearing court proceedings from the Krassians. By the time Leesha and company got back to the Hollow the story was over half over and the book had not progressed even the smallest bit.
The final thing that got to me was that the characters in the book have started to develop more and more ridiculous abilities, from flight to teleportation, telekinesis, instant healing, magic spells, etc. . This is not just one character gaining some powers, there are several gaining all of these at a whim, no explanation, one second a character is on the ground, the nex they are flying around shooting fire and lightning. It seems every time Brett is bored or wants to make a fight super special he just adds super powers to it
All of this being said the action in the last 250 pages of the book was enough to make me want to continue on with the series. Near the end of the book there was a considerable amount actual conflict, both between the krassians and the corelings. The interactions between the Krassians and the main part of the hollow were fun as well. I just hope that Brett stops using background information to fill the stories and uses actual content instead(less)
