Linda Sue Park is the author of this book. She grew up just outside of Chicago and has written 10 books. She is 52 years old, currently married with 2 kids. This book’s genre (in my opinion) would have to be action / adventure. This book is action / adventure because there is one part in the book where the whole town is almost shot. (Which is action). There is another part in this book when this boy named Salva, almost dies of starvation and dehydration, but his uncle pushes him a few more miles. (Which is adventure). Nya summary: A girl named Nya lives in Sudan and everyday she has to go to a well that about 5 hours away just to survive. But in surprise they might be able to build a well right next to them. Salva’s summary: Salva is a 12-year-old boy who goes to school on Sudan. But one day gunshots blow in his town so he has to go somewhere besides home. Will salva survive? You’ll have to read more to find out. This story takes place in Sudan. Sudan is a country in central Africa. It boards Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, and a little bit of Libya. Sudan is one of the poorer countries in Africa. The story also takes place in Ethiopia. Ethiopia boarders Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Southern Sudan, Etriea. The Gilo River happens to be in Ethiopia. Well if the story did not take place in Africa Nya and salva probably would not be starving of water. Also there probably would not be any war so the setting is a big effect on the story. The desert of Sudan was described as a very dry place (considering there was not a lot water). The reason I say it’s dry is because if it was a moist place then I would think that there would be a lot more water. The main characters in this book are Salva and Nya. The supporting characters in this book are Uncle Juer and Nya’s little brother Ariik. There were not many supporting characters in this book. The reason I say that Salva and Nya are the main characters, is because that they are in every single chapter. The reason why I say that Uncle Juer is a supporting character, is because he helps Salva get through life. Salva’s uncle is one of the many reasons he still might be alive. The reason I say that Nya’s little brother is a supporting character is because Nya has to take him with her while she walks to go and get the water which is a real pain in the butt. But Nya still loves him. Salva Character trait: Salva is a strong loving person who keeps himself going through a very tough time even though it means losing his life. Nya Character traits: Nya is a girl who’s job is to go get water for her and her family everyday, and she also happens to be a hard-working fun-loving person. Salva’s uncle’s character traits: he is a man who loves his family very much and is the person in a group who would motivate everyone. Ariik (Nya’s little brother) ‘s character traits. Ariik may only be 5 but he still does his best not to disappoint anybody. One of Salva’s strength’s is little by little. I know that if he has to travel a far distance without water he will keep himself going little by little. For example, if you were on a hike and you lost your water bottle on the way up, and the only way back down is to keep going he would say to himself, “just go to that little rock over there.” Or “Just go to that tree. That’s how he would push himself. Nya’s strength is walking. She can walk 5 hours with no water and she can walk 5 hours with 35 lbs on her head. So that’s just strength in general.
There are 2 protagonists in this story. Uncle Juer and Nya. The reason I say uncle Juer is because he is the reason that Salva Dutt Ariik is still alive. He pushed him through the desert so he would not get hurt and or possibly die. The reason Nya is a hero in this story is because she is the one who brings the water to her family everyday. So she’s a huge help to her family. I would say that the antagonist in this sorry would be the Sudan soldiers. I say that because they basically did genocide on them so of course anyone who would do that would be hated. So basically uncle Juer is a big part of why the plot got solved. This story begins in Sudan in 1985 in a town. A boy named salva goes to school in Sudan. But one day they all heard gunshots so they had to run somewhere but not home. The rising action of this story is when Salva finds uncle Juer and they continue to walk to Ethiopia. The climax of this story is when uncle Juer gets killed. This is the climax because this meant that salva not only lost someone he loved, but he also lost a big help on his journey. I would say that the falling action is when Sava get taken to the refugee camp and when Nya see’s that the well is good and going. There are 2 resolutions in this book. 1. Is when Salva gets taken away from the refugee camp and get taken to America to meet his new family and see his new home. The second resolution is when Salva and Nya meet. The Moral of this story is obviously never give up. The reason I say that is because this 13 year old boy walked from Sudan to Ethiopia, crossed the Gilo river, and walked past a huge desert… with barely any water. So if you think that a 20 minute walk to the pharmacy is tiring, than stop complaining. Salva has no other human characteristics that you and he’s actually dehydrated so be quiet. I think the lesson that the characters learned was that anything is possible. You can build a well between two tree’s and survive, you can cross a river that has war going on in it. And that’s part the reason salva went back to Sudan. Because he wanted to prove that to other people that anything is possible. The part of this book that I enjoyed the most was probably when… he got to America and he’s experiencing a new life. But that’s just me because I like that kind of stuff. And everything that’s regular to us is new to them so that’s entertaining. Another part I liked was when at the beginning when they were at school an then they heard the gun shots and they were told that they could not go home. So basically it was really quick and fast so he really could think. So that was a cool part. The parts that hooked me in this book were probably when Salva got separated from his family. This hooked me because it immeadiatly made my mind have so many questions about what was going to happen. It also gave me feelings for Salva which is important too. Another part that hooked me was when he had to cross the Gilo river. This hooked me because people were dying ( I like that) and he was one of the only people who made it across so it gave me even more respect for him. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and surviving books because almost every chapter that happens. I would also recommend this book to people who don’t believe in “based on story’s” because this is the perfect book for that. I would also only recommend this book to people 9 and older ...more
