Cook Fear Has a Name is my introduction into the writing world of author Creston Mapes. The storyline presented has many reflections on the choices believers have, especially when confronted with evil. The antagonist is a man named Granger who was raised in a home without the love of Christ, love of family and emotional abuse at home as well as school. Therefore, Granger learns how to survive in life without anyone close to him, except for one woman he wants to be his, Pamela Wagner. Fighting the war within him, Granger acts more out of fear than anything rational. He believes the lies that are told to him. He was bullied to the max by others when he was young. The only one to show true friendship was Pam; she showed honest friendship though never really knowing what horrors awaited him when he would go home to his parents. Her impact on him many years ago drives him to make unwise choices, culminating in breaking and entering. Granger also displays his knowledge of her life over the years, causing Pam to choose to believe or not believe God would protect her. Pamela’s husband Jack is a first rate journalist who loves the Lord, Pam and their two daughters. Pam’s family life is anything but normal though not in same way as Granger’s. Jack is someone who shows her what real faith looks like. Now, with his family being threatened and scared all the time, Jack has to decide what the right decisions are in leading his family through the various trials they are facing. Evan is a pastor at a Methodist church and married to a wonderful woman, raising three wonderful boys. Evan battles depression and tries to lead his flock with unwavering devotion, though the associate pastor has other more sinister plans. Evan decides to leave it all behind, including his family because he believes lies whispered in his ear. On one particular night, he is visited by an elderly lady who used to steer Evan to the path God has for him. Throughout the novel, the characters are wrestling with their fears, faith and lives which aren’t what they thought they would be. Somehow the different characters and situations keep presenting the choice of believing God is in control or not. The fears, if allowed to control a person, would seem to cripple their lives; peace in their souls is nonexistent. I read straight through this novel, seeing what would happen in the story and how the threats to the characters pushing them to the precipice of believing God or not. Though I was aware I was reading a work of fiction, I couldn’t help but see how all of us have choices to make decisions based on His Word, with the true love of others upholding us in some of our darkest hours. The suspense, action, times of romance and emotionally packed scenes just wouldn’t let me put it down! Creston Mapes has a new follower for his novels that are in some ways beyond description. The time period is around 1815, with a look back at various events in historical context that took place before this time to provide information relevant to what was currently happening in their respective journals. Reading the private thoughts of those who lived in the 1800s is so very interesting to me. Through their thoughts, readers get to experience vicariously the life from that time period. The difficulties in traveling whether by sea or by land, the length of time to get anywhere and the waiting between or for any type of communication are just a few of the difficulties seen. The anguish Louisa felt in leaving her two oldest sons behind in American while she, her husband and her youngest son traveled to Russia is so very poignant. Louisa thought they would be gone only a year, two at the most; however, their journey lasted far longer. The desperate longing for the two to be reunited after being apart almost a year with Louisa staying in Russia and John traveling elsewhere pulls at the heartstrings. The dedication of John Quincy to serve his country and putting the needs of his country ahead of his own is practically unheard of in today’s society. This deserves our admiration and respect. Thanks to the author for showing us a side of these political figures I had not seen before. The amount of meticulous research needed to produce such a work must have been monumental. The time required to compile all the journal entries, put them in some semblance of order and deciding what to include and what not to include are just some of the hurdles the author must have faced when taking on this project. Her hard work and attention to detail are obvious. The writing style is somewhat antiquated due to the use of original diary entries and some readers might find the prose difficult to follow. I am a fan of the Victorian age, so I’ve read several books in this style and therefore, I had no trouble following the style. However, the timeline did seem to jump around without letting the reader know so it required some re-reading to discover when things were taking place. I also think the book could have been shortened by about 100 pages. The length of the account may be a bit daunting for some readers. Overall, this is a very good historical account about two people to whom much is ignored today. I learned quite a lot about them and would recommend this book. My rating is 4 stars. Title: Red Dawn Rising (Red Returning #2) Author: Sue Duffy Pages: 287 Year: 2013 Publisher: Kregel Publications Sue Duffy‘s latest book in her trilogy, “...more Title: Red Dawn Rising (Red Returning #2) Author: Sue Duffy Pages: 287 Year: 2013 Publisher: Kregel Publications Sue Duffy‘s latest book in her trilogy, “Red Returning”, is titled Red Dawn Rising. This picks up where the first book, The Sound of Red Returning, left off. The story takes place between basically three venues: New York City, Charleston and Washington, D.C. This a contemporary suspense novel with short, crisp chapters that make for easy reading. In addition to the characters from the first book, who appear again in this storyline, there is the addition of Jordan Winslow, Cass Rodino, her mother and step-father, as well as the emergence of the Architect, who the person in charge of the entire saboteur network intent on destroying U.S. landmarks. In addition, the network is to dispose of Liesl Bower, who thwarted their plans in the first book. The saboteurs have long been in place and know what their assignments are; they are just waiting for the signal from the Architect. Liesl is preparing for her wedding later in the afternoon when she answers the front door. She doesn’t realize she is opening the door to danger on a life-threatening scale. Her only means of escape is Evgeny Kozlov, the man who tried to kill her just a short time ago. Now, he has come to her rescue or has he? Is this just another ploy to get her to trust him so he can finally carry out his mission to kill her? What information does the young couple, Cass and Jordan, have that is a danger to her? Liesl is once again on the run, although this time she is not alone. Who has Cass’s stepfather been meeting secretly with at night, but claiming he was only meeting a weird client after hours in their home? There are many surprises and twists in the plot that keep the reader guessing what will happen next. I liked seeing Liesl’s growing spiritual development and her telling others about God. Now, Cass and her mother are beginning a return to the faith they both abandoned long ago thanks to Liesl. I hope in the third book to see Jordan and Cass speak of their newfound faith and that their budding romance will continue. This book is filled with action, suspense and spy thrilling moments. It was very entertaining and the pages flew through my fingers as I eagerly read each page. I await the final book in the series to see how people and their relationships with each other and with God mature. This is just a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a rainy day! My rating is 4 stars. It is set largely in Charleston, South Carolina, with a few other venues used in the story. The second book in the trilogy, Red Dawn Rising was released about two months ago and will be reviewed here in the next few days. Liesl Bower has had a childhood filled with loss. First, her favorite aunt and one she is very close to dies at the hands of her father when Liesl is 14. Then, she receives word a few years later that her father has died in Mexico. Two years later her mother dies from cancer. Lastly, her mentor and the man who was like a second father to her is shot right before her eyes and declared guilty of treason while she is in college. Liesl now is 37 years old and a very successful, well known pianist. She has played before heads of state, royalty and the famous. However, soon her past is going to emerge as she becomes the target of Russian intelligence forces. Why is she a target? What do they think she knows? Her life is again invaded by the CIA and she encounters an old agent who had interrogated her after her mentor’s murder. Who can Liesl trust now? Readers will see Liesl initially as concerned only with herself and how everything affects her. She has no real regard for how actions affect others. She begins to understand the bigger picture in her life and slowly acknowledges the Creator and His presence in her life. She learns that only He can fill the void and emptiness in her life. Cade O’Brien is unemployed and living with his grandfather, Ian O’Brien, in Florida. Cade is determined to return to his home in Charleston and find a new job. His grandfather returns with him to help him get settled. The relationship between the two men is funny, loving and just a delight to witness. Cade lives in an apartment below Liesl though she has been living in Georgetown for the past year. Liesl returns, looking for something the Russians and CIA are desperate for and soon Cade and Ian are involved in the search. Cade and Liesl soon develop romantic feelings for one another. Cade has learned about God from his grandfather and trusts Him completely. Will Liesl be able to do the same? The plotline is very interesting, entertaining and the action fast-paced. I found this book exciting and filled with tension and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I thought Liesl at times was selfish and childish, but in the end she was growing spiritually and relationally. I loved the addition of Ian O’Brien to the story for comic relief and spiritual wisdom. The pages will turn quickly in this spy thriller novel, so don’t miss out! My rating is 4 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Cook Focused on a fictional family named Cummings, there is action laced throughout the novel. One day a father with his youngest daughter in tow go out for time together, and then they simply disappear. Kate the wife of Micah and mother of Hawk, Jesse, Kate and Riley Jo finds her faith as well as her life shattered. For Kate and her grandfather Buck who lives with the family, they cling tenaciously in faith to God waiting for him to bring about the ending they all hope is a happy one. The setting for this story takes place in the Ozark’s with the Cummings family owning a lodge which offers many different activities but above all a breath taking view. Five years later a discovery is made that changes the present and future of the Cummings family as well as Kate’s best friend. Jay grew up has been best friends with Kate for as long as he can remember. When he turns 12 years old he inherits a family heirloom that while he sentimentally values there was some other desire he hoped to have fulfilled. While some members of the Cummings family are struggling to take one day at a time with an unknown future due to the discovery Jay now knows he can no longer run away for his past. Jay wonders if when he divulges his past, if he will still be embraced by the Cummings family more concerned that Kate would no longer want his friendship. As the reader turns the pages the suspense thickens, the action begins to heighten the mystery behind the more than just one family’s nightmare. For me it seemed as though characters had to choose whether to live by faith or not too which determined the peace their hearts contained. I loved the mystery within a mystery which expands the action to include more than the reader is shown at first. The characters can be identified with I would think by anyone who has gone through traumatic life experiences, including making each day something to be valued instead of taken for granted. I can’t wait for book 2 of this series to be released to see how the lives of the various players come to certain conclusions. Romances are just beginning to bloom, the holidays in the story are approaching and the future is brighter than it has been in years. I found myself not wanting to take a break from reading because I wanted to see how things were going to turn out in the novel. I think readers will thoroughly enjoy the suspense, mystery, romance and faith filled novel Not by Sight. My rating is 5 stars. Cook I am a big fan of Harry Kraus’ books and this latest one, An Open Heart, doesn’t disappoint! The majority of the book takes place in Africa. The author uses flashback to fill in the main character’s background and history in order to flesh-out his personality. This is a riveting story and definitely will go on my “keeper” bookshelf. Jace Rawlings is a successful heart surgeon in Virginia. However, once he successfully saves the governor of Virginia by operating on him, his life changes. The governor’s young wife develops an attachment to Jace and he begins spending more time with her in the guise of “checking on his patient, the governor”. Jace’s wife, Heather, refuses to put up with this behavior any longer and asks him to move out. Then, Jace has a car accident, ending up in the hospital. He thinks his dead twin sister has spoken him and called him to return to Africa where they both grew up as the children of missionaries. Also, the governor’s wife is killed while phoning 911 to report Jace’s car accident. Her autopsy report has some interesting findings. Is there a plot to frame Jace for her killing? Jace heads to Africa after recovering from his car accident, thinking if he does enough good deeds he will rid himself of the guilt he feels over his sister’s death and the death of others he has experienced in his life. His good deed will be opening a heart surgery facility in African and operating on the poor, who have no way to pay and can’t get surgery elsewhere. After his first heart surgery, his patient wakes up with a message for him from the “other side”. Is this just postoperative paranoia? Jace hasn’t been a believer for a long time. He wants to believe, but just feels empty inside when others talk about their faith. Jace will encounter strange happenings in Africa that can’t be explained by his scientific mind. He also will experience the frustration and fear that is part of African politics. Is there really a supernatural battle being fought? Is there really a target on his back, making him a threat to differing African factions so that they are trying to kill him? Can Jace discover the faith his twin sister so adamantly wished for him to believe in? Will he be able to repair his marriage? The writing is stellar and the plot keeps moving along at a brisk pace. I read this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down. The chapters are brief so as to keep the reader flipping page after page in excitement to see what will be revealed next. This is another outstanding medical suspense story that shouldn’t be missed! I highly recommend it to one and all! You will not regret the time spent reading this novel. It will whet your appetite for more of this author’s fantastic books. My rating is 5 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Title: Abraham Lincoln (Civil War Stories) Heartwarming Stories of Our Most Beloved President Author: Joe Wheeler Pages: 384 Year: 2013 Publisher: Howard ...more Title: Abraham Lincoln (Civil War Stories) Heartwarming Stories of Our Most Beloved President Author: Joe Wheeler Pages: 384 Year: 2013 Publisher: Howard Abraham Lincoln is still one of the most beloved and remembered Presidents in our nation’s short history. Books and movies abound about the man, his Presidency, marriage and children--a list that almost seems endless. Amazingly, one thing our society seems to value, good looks, Abraham Lincoln didn’t possess. What our society hungers for Abraham Lincoln had, a solid character and moral values that weren’t ever placed on the selling block. So, why is it that he is still admired and endears so many followers? What can be said about this President that hasn’t already been said? I was born in Illinois (the “s” is silent), which I am sure began my infatuation with the Civil War era and the President, but it was just a start. Recently, I reviewed the latest movie “Lincoln”. I also watched the movie “Conspirator” that was released prior to the aforementioned. Each time I see a new movie or read a book about this specific time in our nation’s history, I learn something new. Never can one say that a single book or movie can contain any one person’s life for there is too much happening for that to be accomplished. Here we have more to consider when we read about Abraham Lincoln in a way that I haven’t seen presented before. First, the book focuses on stories that have been passed down from each preceding generation by “oral transmission” (pg XVIII). The author has spent his life searching and preserving these stories so many more people may read, enjoy and learn from them. In addition, the author shares his wealth of pictures he has unearthed before they too disappear because of the age of the original or for simply the love of widely sharing them. The stories written in this volume are short enough to read to younger people and include the many stories Abraham Lincoln was known to tell, much to the dismay of some of his colleagues! There are stories, poems and history embedded throughout the pages that cover Abraham Lincoln’s frontier life, Civil War years and why 150 years later he still grabs our hearts. This book will remain on my shelf so that other family members can read it as well as friends. Abraham Lincoln not only stood tall physically, but his heart seems even bigger than I understood from other sources. He made time to talk and be about the community in which he lived. He could sure frustrate those who were assigned to protect him, but his influence, I believe, still goes on decades later. Please grab a copy of this book for your personal library as well as a gift to someone who loves the subject or the man. My rating is 5+ stars. Sam Lewis is the director of TeamWork, a missions-based operation that is rebuilding some homes lost in a recent flood out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. His heart is to be in full-time missions work, but right now he still owns a financial consulting business in Houston that he works at full-time with time off for his mission work. He is close to his family, caring, smart, funny, handsome and completely dedicated to God. He isn’t looking for a relationship, but soon discovers he can’t stop thinking about Lexa. After getting to know her a little better, he realizes during one of their conversations that one thing he wants that will make him happy is to make her happy. What a guy! Lexa Clarke also is in the financial industry, but takes 8 weeks off to work with Team Work at Sam’s mission. She longs to be closer to God and thinks that by helping others she might be able to accomplish this. At first, she keeps to herself, but gradually allows herself to be drawn out of her protective shell. Her mother died when she was a young girl and her father was very distance. He, too, is now dead and Lexa is alone in the world. However, when she meets Sam, he brings out her sassiness, humor, dedication, and prods her newly awakened faith along the way. Lexa doesn’t think a relationship could ever work between her and Sam as she isn’t a good enough Christian. Sam lets her know she couldn’t be more mistaken in how he views her. Their fledgling relationship certainly comes across several bumps in the road. Can it survive once the 8-week camp is over? Can a man this good be for real? Can a love that happens so quickly and completely be one that lasts? I really liked the two main characters a lot. Their personalities and emotions were portrayed so the reader could really identify with what they were feeling. The interaction and chemistry between Sam and Lexa was palpable and the witty repartee made me smile and laugh out loud sometimes. The chapters are short, which keeps the story moving right along. Again, great dialogue and character development make this a story not to be missed. This is a good summer read for relaxing poolside! My rating is 4 stars. After reading House of Mercy last year, I waited with anticipation for her next thrilling suspense to be published. Here in Afloat, the writer uses various components to weave a tale that includes mystery, murder, suspicion, and supernatural along with themes such as forgiveness with restoration of relationships. The characters learn through tragedy and the constant presence of danger to see themselves as they really are, leaving them to choose whether to embrace a different path or stay the same. Two brothers, Vance and Pete, share the loss of their father and were torn apart from each other because of unforgiveness, blame and grief. One brother, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, seeks solace in alcohol until Zeke shares with him the truth of the only One who is able to carry such a weight. Danielle who has been widowed two years with a little boy, Simeon, believes the lie she grew up…only rely on yourself. Now, can she let go of her selfish nature to do something that would require selflessness? Ranier is to come and see the units that were being built to float on the water engineered by Vance. Tony, the financial backer, is selling these units at an astronomical price. However, Ranier never comes to view the unit; yet, how is it that Danielle, Tony’s executive assistant, along with a few others sees him on the property while others do not? The water that is a muddy color seems to be illuminated with silver moving objects that some people can see while others can’t. Simeon has faith in Ranier. The single cuff link that he gave to Simeon glows when all other power is cut off during a catastrophe. Now, those left on the cove have no outside contact, no electricity and help seems a million miles away. Since the one unit, number 12, is the only one habitable, the mystery that at first is hidden begins to be revealed. Through a series of bad decisions and limited paths to travel to freedom, some people are beginning to turn on others with the hope of decreasing the number of survivors. With time running out, one man’s past becomes crystal clear and a last ditch effort may or may not keep his secret from public view. Plan to spend an afternoon lost in the pages of Afloat for there is so much more beneath the surface than what I have revealed. More characters, adventures, along with a good dose of hope will keep you turning the pages until you’re through. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself exclaiming to a friend that they have got to read this latest work of Erin Healy’s. I eagerly anticipate her next novel and sure hope it is soon! My rating 5+ stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility. Cook There are many interesting people who lived in Biblical times whether one is referring to the Old Testament or the New Testament. Each testament offers to us truth about the One True God who reveals Himself, starting in Genesis. The times those people lived in are vastly different than ours culturally as well as politically, economically and more. There is one thing that is the same: We are a people created to know God relationally through Jesus Christ. Samson and Delilah were people who lived before the time of Christ. Readers can learn about Samson’s true history (nonfictional) beginning in the book of Judges Chapter 13, which is located in the Old Testament. There are several historical books that can be read to understand the times and people that can help readers grasp the history of that period. Ginger Garrett writes a fictional tale of Samson and Delilah that will captivate the reader as it is told from point of view of Samson’s mother, Amara and Delilah. Being told from three different women’s’ points of view is helpful as readers get to understand the possible thoughts and feelings of women in ancient times. In ancient history, women were raised in a patriarchal society. Their lives were to be led and cared for by men. As such, some had good, rich and full lives while others weren’t as fortunate. Some people today use this as a reason to live a life focused on doing without the “restraints” the Bible teaches. This is unfortunate and living life with less instead of more. The novel’s chapters alternate between the women in Samson’s life and his mother, allowing us to understand both sides of the action. We see what happens when a man doesn’t live his life according to what God has said, but we also see the redemption of that life God brings. Samson lived during the time known as the Judges when Israel had no king and they did what “was right in their own eyes”. The novel fictionalizes many of the true events in Samson’s life, which serves to captivate the imagination of the audience. Remember what Ginger Garrett wrote is a wonderful fictional tale you can enjoy and share with others. Then, read the true account of Samson from the Word of God, beginning in Judges Chapter 13. I found the novel reminding me of how short we fall from what God has planned for us, and how He redeems us when it seems like all hope is lost. My rating is 4 stars. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is definitely not a typical mystery. This story involves some mysterious happenings, but has more to do with becoming aware of the unseen battle between good and evil fought 24/7. What role do we play, if any, in this battle? This is a follow-up to the author’s first novel, A Season of Miracles, which I haven’t read, but plan on doing so. The story is told from the point of view of Richard Powell. It begins with him as a 52-year-old professor, who thinks he might be going a little crazy as he can’t get conversations out of his mind. He is an ability to remember conversations verbatim, and he has started reliving conversations from 1976 and can’t stop. His two professor friends advise him to journal his thoughts/conversations as therapy. Via flashback technique, we visit Richard as a teenager in his home state of Alabama. Richard is a 15-year-old genius who tries to hide his intelligence because he just wants to lead a normal life and fit in with all the other kids. He is extremely well-read and on course to graduate high school very early. He is a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. He has four or five very close friends, who are fellow Christians like himself. They have a bond that was formed during a Little League baseball season five years prior in 1971 and their relationship with Rafer, who has since died. They attend church and Boy Scouts together. Just to read about teenage life in 1976, which is when most of the story takes place, is so very enjoyable. There are many funny scenes and comments sprinkled throughout. Things take a more serious vein and talk turns to angels and demons. Are they real? Can a person believe in angels and not demons? What is their role? Can they be seen by humans? Can they harm humans or influence their decisions? The questions and thoughts Richard has are sometime mind-blowing in their depth. What a mind! Richard is in the habit of thinking before he speaks which I admire greatly and wish I could do better myself. This book made me think about what I believe and why I believe what I do. It made me laugh out loud. It took me back to memories of my teenage years. The teenagers portrayed in this story appear so much more sophisticated and intellectual than I remember myself or any other teenager I knew at that time. It was really stunning to hear some of their conversations and their comments or questions were sometimes very thought-provoking and deep. The book has a very entertaining plot with characters that come to life and leap off the pages right into the readers’ thoughts. The writing is excellent! Put on your thinking cap for this one and get ready to use it for sure. My rating is 5 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Title: The Texas Brides Collection (9 Romances from the Old west) Authors: DiAnn Mills, Darlene Mindrup, Kathleen Y’Barbo, Michelle Ule, Darlene Frankl...more Title: The Texas Brides Collection (9 Romances from the Old west) Authors: DiAnn Mills, Darlene Mindrup, Kathleen Y’Barbo, Michelle Ule, Darlene Franklin, Lynette Sowell, Tamela Hancock Murray Pages: 448 Year: 2013 Publisher: Barbour Books Here we have a collection of short stories that are set in Texas during the mid-1800s. Some of the stories have the uniqueness of Texas Rangers added to the spice of romance. Serena’s Strength by DiAnn Mills weaves the story of a girl coming into womanhood. She is a daughter of a ranger, who wants more for his daughter than marriage to a ranger. When Serena finds herself falling in love with Chet, what will it take to change her father’s heart so he will let her go to discover what God has in store for her? The Reluctant Fugitive by Darlene Mindrup is a new author to me. The story includes characteristics of frontier danger, romance and bank robbery. April has been a dressmaker since her parents passing. Her brother, Ted, has not been around in a while and when he shows up, she finds herself entangled in a dangerous situation. On top of that, the Ranger who comes to track the robbers and April is the best and begins to battle his heart as to April’s innocence. There is a mystery involved here plus whether the past will determine the path of faith in the lives of the main characters. Saving Grace shows how much love a woman has for her ranger husband and the children they had together. Suddenly, finding herself a widow with a third child on the way, the business her husband had started may not survive because the boat captains don’t want to interact with a woman. Then, right after a time of prayer, a ranger rides into her yard, but he has no idea what is to come and neither does Grace. Kathleen Y’Barbo writes a wonderful story that shows the way God answers prayer may not exactly be the way we expect. An Inconvenient Gamble by Michelle Ule follows a man named Charles Moss, who, after the Civil War, travels the state of Texas surveying with a former colonel. A young widow, Jenny, is caring for her mother-in-law and two remaining brothers on what was once a thriving horse farm. With surprising twists and turns in the story, the reader will love the way the author ends this story by showing the hope that can come from leaving behind reminders of the past. Angel in Disguise tells the tale about a poor young woman named Rosie, who loves the Lord. Rosie has a criminal record that causes some women in society not to trust her. Owen is a Ranger who is longing to return to duty, but can’t until the doctor releases him. Written by Darlene Franklin this story of hope, forgiveness and truth is very enjoyable. It also gives readers a message to contemplate. Rueben’s Atonement by Lynette Sowell explores the theme of believing in the grace of God and His complete forgiveness versus trying to work for one’s own atonement. Here is a story of brothers who made a choice that changed the lives of many folks in the town of Raider’s Crossing. A young lady is heartbroken and wants to believe in a future filled with family fun. Will Rueben learn to receive God’s grace as he seeks forgiveness? Will the brothers come together to work the family land as their Pa had hoped and find forgiveness in the Lord as their Ma prayed they would? DiAnn Mills second story in the book is titled, The Peacemaker. This tells of how a young widow learns to take over her husband’s ranch after his death. It also is about Colt, who is released from prison and bent on seeking revenge on the man who put him there. When he rides to his destination ready for carrying out revenge, he ends up finding way more than he ever bargained for including a future he thought would never be fulfilled. Outlaw Sherriff written by Kathleen Y’Barbo shares an entertaining western romance about an outlaw who the Lord saved and an adventuresome woman named Lydia. Both Caleb and Lydia arrive in town with different hopes and vastly differing pasts. So, how do these two people discover what the Lord has in mind and what His will is for both of them? To conclude this collection is story written by Tamela Hancock Murray titled, A Gamble on Love. Left with a saloon girl for longer than expected, Benjamin has retained a lot of his virtues. Pearl is leaving the saloon to go and take care of ma on the ranch where she grew up. Now they have realized feelings for each other never before recognized and not spoken of plus Pearl’s ma is quite a character. What happens here is sure to be a surprise! These stories are very enjoyable and entertaining when sitting outside with a soft drink, some shade with some time on readers’ hands. They each are faith-filled as well as unique in some ways, but there is something else that ties them together. To know what that is you need to read the book. Don’t feel you have to read the book in one sitting. I enjoyed pulling out the novel and reading a whole story or just a couple chapters at night to ease the mind before bed. Each story reminded me of different aspects of God’s character and His ways being something of a mystery to mankind. I hope you enjoy reading each story and finding the tie that binds them all together. My rating is 5 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Mara has been taking care of herself, her sick mother and her crippled brother since she was eight years old. She cooks, cleans, plants a vegetable garden and tends it, gets water, raises goats, weaves wool into thread to barter for food and much more. She is now of marriageable age, but knows no one in the village will want to marry such a poor girl with a lame brother and scandalous mother to take care of as well. Her mother, Nava, has been married five times and currently “entertains” a pagan from a nearby town some evenings. Mara lives in fear that the people of Sychar will find out about her mother’s visitor and stop their charitable donations to her family so they will starve to death or exile them from the village. Mara has lived with persecution because of her mother’s deeds all her life, but most of the people have still tried to help out she and her brother when they could. What will happen when they find out about her mother’s latest goings on? Will she be forced to marry a shepherd old enough to be her grandfather in order to provide food for her brother and mother? Nava is still beautiful at age 30. She, however, does nothing to take care of her children. She sleeps most of the day and when she is awake just sits and stares at the wall. She has been like this since the birth of her lame son, Asher. She begins to think her children would be better off without her. One day when they are visiting her sister, she forces herself off of her pallet and walks to the city well. She is almost to the point of throwing herself into the well, which would make it ceremonially unclean and force the villagers to walk quite a distance for water and in her mind, is just revenge for how they have treated her and her children. Just as she is poised over the lip of the well, a man asks her for a drink of water. She is surprised and astonished enough at this man talking to a Samaritan woman that she complies with his request. Soon they have a conversation that will change her life. Shem arrives in town as a spoiled, rich, young man to stay with his maternal grandfather until the trouble he created in Caesarea blows over. His grandfather thinks he is there to learn about the olive farming business so his grandfather will have a male heir to take over when he dies. Shem only plans to be there a few months, but says nothing about this to his grandfather. Shem has always had a tender spot for the underdog and jumps in without thinking to defend the downtrodden. He rescues Mara from some village youths and thus begins their friendship. Will it develop into something more? When the most difficult decision of his life has to be made, can Shem release his vengeance and give his whole heart and soul to Jesus? Can Mara, who has come to believe fully Jesus is who he claims to be, do what is best for everyone with the choice she must make? This is just a wonderful story of self-sacrifice, total surrender to God, journeys taken and lives forever changed. The depths of the character development are compelling. I found it fascinating to think about the different aspects of this story, the historical accuracy and events as well as “what might have been”. I would recommend reading this very entertaining story, and I’m looking forward to the author’s next book, Siloam. My rating is 4 stars. The novel, That Certain Summer, takes a more relaxed story that is built on the lives of four adults, two of whom are sisters. There are some aspects of the novel that are mystery-like because they reveal something about the characters’ past or present life. A major health issue brings Val back to the hometown she left ages ago to help Karen through the summer care for their widowed mother. Val’s reasons for her return are to handle a situation that has been dogging her steps for the past 18 years. David is a physical therapist who moves to Washington to take a new position because he felt the Lord led him and his daughter there. Scott’s life is irrevocably changed in one night, and now he has to find a new reason to live, to hope that all days will not be as dark as the present days. Margret is the mother of Val and Karen. Her stroke has done nothing to change her demeaning attitude or tongue. However, as she recovers, she is about to give a peek about why she is that way when her daughters least expect it. This easy to read novel explores issues we all wrestle with at different times in our lives, whether they be questions of faith, wrestling with doubts or concern for the future. Other parts show how real people might respond to living through divorce, infidelity, and learning not to compare oneself to standards we aren’t meant to. Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts God offers to us, and it definitely isn’t something we usually seek out. One aspect of the novel talks about self-forgiveness, which isn’t a thought or teaching I agree with as I don’t see that in the Bible. There isn’t anything good in and of ourselves. Genesis tells us that our hearts are inclined to do wickedness continually. We are to believe in God’s forgiveness for He alone is the source. Redemption of lost relationships as portrayed in the novel can be real if God is doing the redeeming. Sometimes relationships cannot be redeemed as if to picking up where it was before, though forgiveness towards others can happen. I read the book in a short amount of time and enjoyed it a lot. There is hope in this novel and the way the consequences of behavior can be dealt with in loving and secure relationships. I liked, too, how one person didn’t seem to embrace the faith that was lived out before him for years even when facing serious health issues. How true that we cannot decide for others, but we can choose how we will respond to their choices whether we agree with them or not. My rating is 4 stars. Roy Pages: 176 Year: 2009 Publisher: Inanna Publications and Education Inc. This novel is a collection of 15 short stories written by Zoe Roy, who was born in China and lived under the Red Terror of Chairman Mao. These stories no doubt are written from some of her life experiences, but also endowed with her fictional storytelling ability. I won’t try to write about each story as that would be too lengthy for this forum, so I’ll try to summarize the main themes put forth. Women’s experiences from childhood through adulthood are the focus of the short stories. Using the technique of flashback, some characters relive a simple life on a peasant farm or some a lost love or some the struggle of wondering about Mao’s ideology. We see how the young were indoctrinated and psychologically manipulated into Mao’s regime and the struggle of some to adopt his ideologies as they were forced to give up family, friends, and the only way of life they had ever known. There is also a strange story included about the use of pesticides. I don’t understand why this very weird story was included in the collection. The ideology of feminism is also portrayed in some of the stories as well as the abuse of women and their reactions to it. There is some man-bashing that goes on in some stories that I didn’t appreciate. Also, there were two stories that questionably could be interpreted as two females in a relationship that could be more than friendship in one story and the subject of incest is touched upon in another. Immorality via affairs also occurs in more than one of the stories. I didn’t enjoy these stories with these particular undercurrents. While I enjoyed learning about women’s experiences in China during this time period and their subsequent adjustments to freedom, I found the conclusions too many of the stories to just stop without any real resolutions or wrapping things up. At the end of some of the stories, I was left scratching my head, thinking “Huh, that’s it?” I found some of the characters in certain stories stiff and not true to life; however, there were some characters that seemed to provide genuine emotions that I could relate to. Most of the stories are disjointed and the change from flashback to the present is not a smooth transition. I would have enjoyed more historical information and less feminist propaganda. My rating is 2 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility. Zoe Roy has written a very poignant novel with The Long March Home. Set during the Cultural Revolution in China for the most part, this story is very realistic and thought-provoking. “It was so easy during this time to be misunderstood, and then accused,” thinks one of the main characters, Meihua. The author herself lived under the late Mao Zedong’s rule and therefore has a lot of experience with this subject matter. Meihua Wei is a half-American, half-Chinese, art teacher who has been living in China for over 15 years. She is married to a Chinese man, and their children have been born in China. Due to her heritage, she has always been viewed as suspicious, but during the Red Terror this has never been truer. She is falsely accused, publically humiliated and condemned, then sent to prison for “reformation” with a sentence of 13 years. She did absolutely nothing wrong and was a loyal Communist; yet, because of her parentage that was enough to convict her. Also, denouncing teachers, doctors and other learned professions was another way to implement Mao’s Cultural Revolution. She leaves her two youngest children in the care of her servant as her husband lives and works in a labor camp. He sends money, but he can’t live with his family and take care of them. The family’s loyal servant, Yao, raises these two children as her own without pay. The fear and terror the author evokes as these poor people live their lives, having to watch their every action and word is stunning. They never know who might be watching and waiting to denounce them. Yezi has grown up while her mother has been imprisoned and is a delightful girl. She is smart, brave and curious. Her mother gets released early from prison and shortly thereafter they receive a letter from Meihua’s American mother, wanting to re-establish contact. She has been searching for them for several years. Eventually, Mao dies and the new leader begins to open up relations between nations. Meihua’s mother is able to finally meet Yezi. Yezi wants to explore her heritage and soon a search is underway for Meihua’s father, whom she has never met. How will they ever find him? Within this story, there is a revolution within a revolution as “…the people, who put me behind bars, are using the Cultural Revolution to disrupt Mao’s authority and destroy China.” This is voiced by a prisoner celled with Meihua. Also, the story of family ties, survival, sacrifice for others and love are depicted. I found this book to be very interesting, informative and well-written. My rating is 4 stars. Before you read The Judgment Stone, please read its predecessor The 13th Tribe because the story is more enjoyable if you understand the previous events and more. You could still enjoy this novel as there are intermittent references to the original, but so much will be missed by bypassing The 13th Tribe. As soon as you open the book, the action takes off as if it never ended; there is another attack at the monastery. However, there is more going on in the spiritual realm that is now being seen by some of the characters. Jagger has built a panic room for Beth and Tyler to run to when there is trouble erupting so that he can focus on combating those who seek to destroy. Spiritual warfare is told about in the Bible and now a recently discovered artifact may help others see the unseen simply by touching it. Jagger is still wrestling with his faith, his immortality and the many questions and doubts he battles. Now there is a group bent on causing deeper pain than the Tribe, and Owen and Jag are chasing them. Beth and Tyler are at the monastery preparing for a funeral of three monks killed in a previous attack, but they are not alone. On top of that, one group has possession of The Judgment Stone and plans on using it for evil purposes. Jag has a splinter that fell off the pain stone that helps him see into the spiritual realm and there is someone he attempts to speak to as he has questions. On top of that, when touching the stone, blue vertical lights are seen everywhere with some brighter than others. Where do these lights come from? Where do the lights end? Flying over many continents in hopes of stopping the carnage and the group responsible for it, Own and Jag need help beyond human capability. Beth and Tyler need protection, assurance and hope. Where do they turn to get what each of them needs? There is also the burning bush, Mount Sinai, a tattoo that identifies one of the groups, the spiritual realm being seen with spiritual sight and man seeing beyond just the horizontal realm of the physical world. Add these components together and you’re reading a high-wired suspense-filled thriller! There is so much in this novel that reminds me of praying, choosing to believe or not, and a love that is sacrificial and lived out daily. I hope the author plans on more books in this series as the action, adventure, archeological sites and biblical references keep the mind of the reader active. However, beware there are mysteries you may not see until the author reveals them, adding more intrigue with heart pumping suspense. My rating is 5 stars! A page turner with quite an adrenaline rush! I bought this last year because the title caught my attention, though I had no idea what the novel was about. By the front cover, I thought maybe it would be something akin to science fiction or like a Frank Peretti novel. What I didn’t expect was a tale that has so many elements of different genres I wonder how the cataloging personnel ever settled on Christian suspense. Trust me; it has suspense along with mysteries, archeology, history, science, military, Old Testament plus love. I am not sure exactly what to share as I don’t want to spoil the reader’s excitement by giving away too much about a story that has so many twists and turns. There is an ex-military man who is working security for a monastery after an accident forever changed his life. Jagger’s physical life isn’t the only change that occurs, but his spiritual life also. His wife, Beth, loves him, understands him well and prays for him while waiting for healing to come. Tyler, their son, brings smiles and joy to Jagger’s life in ways he can’t ever explain, but never wants to live without. Now, a group of people known as the 13th Tribe have begun to arrange devastation that would make a nuclear explosion look like child’s play. Some tend to have much longer lives than others, but to find out which characters that might be you have to read the book. What would you do if someone you loved could out live you by a long time? Would you distance yourself from them or live the rest of your time, enjoying life with them? Encased in this story is action that takes them across the globe on a journey to initiate their destruction with a couple of people trying very hard to thwart their plans. The looks from the Tribes faces seem surreal; their bodies heal quickly unless mortally wounded in one way only. Trying hard to earn God’s favor and no longer be separated from Him is why they do what they do, but they cannot grasp grace. When Owen begins to share things with Jag, the man has to make a choice to help Owen or not. What is it that turns the decision one way or the other for Jag? Who is this Owen character? You will not want to pass up this fascinating novel and its sequel, The Judgment Stone, which I will share in an upcoming review. Either way, the chapters are short and the heart thumping adventure is beyond description! Never have I read something of this nature that includes so many different woven together to keep the reader glued till the very last word, and what a word it is! It has an ending I never saw coming, and I can’t wait to dive into the sequel! My rating for this is 5 stars. Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility. Dionne Moore Pages: 240 Year: 2013 Publisher: Abingdon Press Being a Civil War enthusiast for me means learning about the time, reading stories in that time frame, both fiction as well as nonfiction. There are many theories about different parts of that era. The amount of life lost is something that still staggers my heart and mind. When I read about this timeframe, I see past the battles; I see quilts made that held messages of a variety I had never known. Here is a fictional story about a crippled young woman from the North who believes she is to be a nurse, but when faced with the atrocities she can’t bring herself to think of facing them every day. Beth goes to live with her grandmother, Greta, to learn how to help the hurting, but Greta wants her to see a bigger picture. Joe, along with his brother, Ben, has joined the war after facing the death of family members. One night, after Joe has been shot, Ben is leading him to a place to be cared for when suddenly Ben is killed. The next time Joe wakes up, he sees Beth’s face and there begins the journey that ends up changing both of their lives forever. I can tell you there is so much more to the wonderful story woven together to place before the reader. Beth needs hope for her future after being hurt in the past. Joe needs hope when he has more questions than answers and his love for a northern woman is a mystery. The other characters need hope for everyday life and freedom. A Heartbeat Away is a faith-filled romance, action and adventure tale. In the story, you will see that hope is born and burned into the heart through faith in God as well as through adversity. Enjoy this fictional work as soon as you can, then share the message of hope with someone else. My rating is 4 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. I spent a Sunday afternoon just reading the book from cover to cover and I enjoyed the time doing so. For one thing, reading it all at once helped me to follow the story all the way through. As I read, I was reminded of other novels I had read with the theme of end times as well as some of the movies I have seen. There were parts in the story that were hard to read, not because it was gross just imagining if it were to happen as written. The point of view is first person by the lead male character named Brian who works for the FBI and is married with a third child being born as the story begins. In time, Brian receives a promotion to become part of the secret service detail, a position that places him in a position to hear and see the inner workings of the American government. Brian, at first, is quite excited about the promotion, plus the birth of his son until he begins to discern what is happening in the spiritual world. Of course, there is more to the novel than these few sentences can encompass. I hope you too will take advantage of an afternoon to read the book. You may or may not agree with Rapture theology; however, the story is quite captivating and intriguing no matter your belief. Sometimes when we read what a writer produces we can use that to communicate our thoughts to others as well as the author. I wrote Cliff while I was reading with questions about the novel’s content. He responded right away and was thankful to hear from me. Should you read Times of Trouble, please take time to converse with the author via FaceBook or Twitter as he loves to hear peoples’ feedback whether they are questions, comments or suggestions. The above mentioned body is discovered in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The action starts in chapter one and continues all the way to the last page. This book is just a blast to read! It is very entertaining and will easily grab the reader’s attention from beginning to end. Grayson Hawkes has now been in charge of Disney World for 18 months. His job as a pastor at Celebration Community Church has been taken over by one of his close friends and staff members; however, he still preaches at one service every Sunday. The three members of his church staff are also now employed in some capacity at Disney World. He has agreed to a journalist and her crew following him around for a few days and interviewing him to give the world an inside look at his life and Disney. This is something he almost immediately regrets. The lead reporter, Kate, pushes her way into Hawk’s current mystery of spare animatronic robots showing up on various rides throughout the Disney Theme Parks. Hawk finds Kate attractive and interesting. He got burned by a woman during his last adventure that eventually gave him the key to the kingdom, so he is reluctant to trust Kate at first. Can he trust her not to share this mystery with the world? If made public knowledge, it would make it impossible to solve the current mystery. Who is putting these robots on the rides and how are they doing it? Can they solve the mystery before “the bad guys” hurt someone? Will they succeed in getting Hawk’s key to the kingdom? Who is behind this? I admire very much Jeff’s dedication to authenticity and extreme detail in everything Disney. I’ve visited Disney World several times and not noticed many of the things he points out while his main character is searching for clues. I can’t wait to search these things out on my next trip! Jeff is a fabulous storyteller! This is a fun, exciting and entertaining book, as well as series. I hope Jeff continues this series because as the author writes from a Walt Disney quote (though Disney is referring to his parks), “It will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” My rating is 5 stars. Cook Years ago I taught from the book of Esther in the Old Testament, learning that hope shines brightest against the blackest backdrop. All of us can relate to the various experiences that life brings through our journey this side of heaven. Where do you go or to Whom do you go when you need hope, encouragement, maybe even words to do what is right when inside of you there is overwhelming fear? Esther was born over five centuries before Christ Jesus was born in the manager in Bethlehem. At a time when women weren’t cherished or loved, they were to do as they were told. Esther lost her parents and would have been lost herself if it were not for her cousin Mordecai who adopted her, raising her in the knowledge of God. Xerxes was king of an empire that was vast, cruel and dominated all nations, except for Greece. Once Vashti was in exile, Xerxes needed a new queen to be beside him. All virgins were to be rounded up in his kingdom for one night with the king in the hopes that one would be chosen as queen, taking Vashti’s place. If not, they were relegated to the harem to live out the rest of their lives never to return home or have a normal life. How could God use a pagan king and an orphaned Jewish girl to bring about the saving of His chosen people, the Jews? When you read the book of Esther, you will see the plans laid by one man to eradicate the Jews. Read it and you will see a Jewish man who was faithful to God and saved the life of a king when he uncovers a plot to harm the king. In a twist of irony, the one who longs for the throne actually has to elevate the very man he despises. To learn the names of who these men were, read the Bible and find out, plus learn how Purim became a celebration that is still a feast today! Read Chosen: The Lost Diaries of Queen Esther and find a jewel of a heart that learns to shine from within the halls of the palace. Told in first person point of view, we get a unique perspective as to how Esther felt living in a time that few would want to or with a man who knew no boundaries and took what he wanted. See how God works in Esther and the tale Ginger Garrett weaves of those who desire to murder the king in order to take over the kingdom. Ginger writes with the unique knowledge of history, women and kings. It will not only captivate you, but propel you to read the Bible. Esther is a reflection of one who submitted to God and trusted Him to work all things together for good; it is an inspiring story. I know you will not only enjoy the tale you will learn about the times, events and how God worked through a woman who trusted in Him with all her heart. My rating is 5+ stars. Before I read either novel, I knew nothing about how much dogs have been used and are a part of the military. Ronie Kendig writes a very active and engaging thriller that follows Talon and his handler, Aspen, through various adventures. Aspen’s twin brother has disappeared and declared MIA. Since it seems no one is going to try to find out what happened, she takes it upon herself to do so. Even more intriguing is a man known as Cardinal who is asked to take Aspen with her dog to another country and Cardinal is fighting this assignment. Most know the man only by the name Cardinal. Now, he has come forth claiming to have been with Austin in Africa two years prior on a mission. On A Breed Apart Ranch in Texas, Talon has been recovering from wounds and his trauma from a former mission. Aspen feels like her twin brother is alive, though no one believes her. Talon has grown close to Aspen as his new handler. Please read Trinity before reading Talon to fully appreciate the depth of the story Ronnie has written as well as the continuing of the characters from Trinity: Military War Dog. There is action, adventure, romance and bringing to the present the past of a couple characters lives in order for them to find peace. Do they acknowledge God? You have to read this intriguing and engaging fast-paced novel. The chapters are short, making it easy to enjoy the story in short snippets of time, plus occasional use of flashback helps the reader understand the broader horizon of the story. The tale will take you from the United States of America to Russia to Africa with each place having a unique place in the lives of the characters in this novel. A third novel is already in the works titled, Beowulf: Explosives Detection Dog. In the back part of the novel, the author shares an introduction to a real handler and his dog plus an organization known in short as RMWDAO. The letters stand for Retired Military War Dog Assistance Organization, which was founded in 2011. The organization can be located on FaceBook and www.rmwdoa.org to read about these amazing animals and the handlers. My rating is 5 stars. She is under so much stress trying to learn her family’s oil business after her father’s death three months ago that she is having recurrent panic attacks. To deal with these attacks she tries breathing techniques, Sudoku puzzles and calling on God to come to her. She soon notices that she feels very calm being near Bo Porter, her father’s horse farm manager. She has a light bulb moment and realizes God is working through His Spirit, using Bo to calm her. But Meg is his boss so how can she keep her anxiety at bay through being with him and have him not get the wrong idea that she is interested in him, even though she really is smitten with him? Bo has only known Meg for a short period of time, a matter of hours actually, and he chooses to be her ally and protector because he sees through the chic businesswoman to the vulnerable woman beneath. He knows they can only have a professional relationship, right? His head listens, but his heart is having trouble processing that. Besides, in six months, Meg is closing the horse farm on the advice of her financial managers and he will be out of a job and out of her life. There is a very funny scene when Meg and Bo volunteer to babysit an 18-month-old for an afternoon and evening. I laughed out loud at this one! Some bargaining goes on that day and Meg agrees to two riding lessons with Bo. Her father tried to teach her when she was a little girl and the first lesson she fell off the horse. She hasn’t liked horses since. Will she keep her end of the bargain and go through with the riding lessons? The more time they spend together the more they care for one another. Will either of them be willing to cross the employer/employee boundary? Does Bo really care for her or is he manipulating her in order to change her mind about closing the horse farm? There are other facets to the story, so I’ll let the reader find out what else happens. This is an easy, relaxing read that flows well. The pages turn quickly and the chapters are not too long. This will be a great summer romance to read while sitting by the pool. It was neat to see someone with such a sensitive and tender heart who had been used so treacherously in the past, trust in God and overcome her some of her biggest fears. God truly wants us to trust Him in all things. My rating is 4 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Both siblings must marry someone of wealth to save the family they are leaving behind. Their father has invested unwisely and lost all his money. In a last ditch effort to avoid selling his home and letting everyone know they are destitute, he sends his two oldest children, Kate 27 years old and Christopher 24 years old, to live with their uncle, a baron in England. The Great Exhibition of 1851 is being assembled as they arrive, but their uncle fears for their safety and advises them not to attend. Christopher is disappointed as he is very interested in the Industrial Revolution. He is a railroad lawyer and figures if he can’t marry for money, maybe he can marry for love and work to support himself and his bride. Once on English soil, the siblings soon fall in love with people completely below their social station in society’s eyes. Kate is “on the shelf”, and with no dowry can’t be picky if any aristocratic gentleman offers for her hand in marriage. Her uncle hosts a month-long house party, inviting eligible men for her to choose from and eligible ladies for Christopher to do the same. Kate immediately finds herself the focus of a 40-year-old bachelor, who is a viscount. Is he an answer to her prayer? He is kind and attentive, but he doesn’t love her and she doesn’t love him. Respect and admiration are enough to base a marriage on, right? Kate’s heart belongs to the garden architect, Andrew Lawton. He loves her, but will that be enough? He can’t provide for Kate in the manner she is accustomed to and his future employment is in question. The reader sees Kate learn, after much heartache, the value of praying to God and listening for His answer. She had been praying, telling God what she wanted to happen and getting no answers from God. I can sure relate to having done that before! This served as a reminder to me to pray for God’s will to be done, not mine. I would have liked a little more action and little less gardening to take place in the story. I did like the dual love stories of the brother and sister taking place at the same time. The pages turn quickly and this makes for a pleasant way to spend an afternoon or two. My rating is 3 stars. He has been inducted into the S.O.D., aka sons of darkness, due to his success tempting and deceiving humans. The account is told from the first person point of view of Crumblewit. Each chapter is dated for the reader’s benefit as Crumblewit doesn’t keep track of time. Readers are treated to events from Crumblewit’s past via flashbacks. These events are like a training manual for the new demon just arriving in Hell. God is given the title of “unmentionable one” or “the enemy” and never referred to by name. The story is filled with sarcasm and irony, but underlying the various funny comments, characters and situations there is truth to be found. One of Crumblewit’s favorite techniques to deceive humans is the mnemonics used to convince them that the Bible is Old-fashioned, Illogical and Laughable—OIL. How true is this today? I know people who say they are Christians that hold to this viewpoint and are being led astray. Another very effective strategy demons use is to get Christians involved in “busyness” to keep them too busy to pray, read their Bibles, etc… Again, I see this happen frequently among church members. Crumblewit is a member of the SSS 666 research team and one of the areas they dedicate their time to explore is “religion”. During their research, they discover the many ways Christians can be turned from their faith by becoming absorbed in peripheral matters such as minor doctrinal issues, differing philosophies or how people dress. This is an ongoing struggle as well with many churches. I’m not criticizing as I am far from perfect; I’m just trying to point out some truths the author brought to my attention. Maybe these truths or others from the book will make readers stop and think about their own walk with the Lord. There is a hilarious argument between a liberal theologian and an atheist whose souls are trapped down below. There are many other funny characters included in the tale that are used to provide more fodder for Crumblewit’s humor. The characterizations and comments about those in the media are spot on. This book is definitely worth reading. I enjoyed the humorous aspect as well as the historical accounts of how Satan and his demons have constantly been at war with God and how various battles of this war have shown up on earth, affecting the human race. The battles are still going on every day; however, I’m thankful God has won the war! This story really made me think and give a few out loud comments agreeing with the author’s take on the devil’s schemes. I had a smile on my face while reading many portions of the story and some laugh out loud moments. My only negative comment is the type was too small, but other than that, the book is surely a keeper. My rating is 5 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Here is a mystery that spans years and involves three families more entwined than they know that are about to be unraveled when a fourth party enters the scene. Lucas is the town doctor. He is not usually called to be a coroner at a crime scene, but tonight when he receives the call, many lives are going to be forever changed. In Blackhawk, Iowa, Meg and Jess have literally grown up together. Dylan moves to town, but never feels like he is accepted. Years later a body is found in the floor of a barn, swinging over it is a man who has hung himself. No note is left. His only daughter returns from California in hopes of clearing her father’s name and by default her own, but it isn’t as easy as Angela first thought it to be. On top of that, Lucas and his wife bear their own grief, wondering if their marriage will be able to overcome and receive renewed hope. With riveting characters and mysteries in the mix, this novel was very interesting to read and the ending had more to it besides the conclusion. There are a few swear words in the book, which I don’t see as either distracting the reader or adding anything to the story. The chapters flip back and forth between Lucas and Meg and following the tale isn’t hard at all. Lucas is the present character in the town; Meg is from the past, but as the climax begins to build there seems to be some thread that wraps the two together. The identity of the body found under the floor of the barn is a stunning discovery in the small town and learning how many people go missing every year is even more so. With very few clues to go on, learning the identity seems to be foremost in a few minds. One theme in the story is learning to forgive someone who is gone for actions done in the past that are devastating in order to go forward unimpeded without shame by family members, maybe even strangers. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I began reading Sleeping in Eden, but it sure was a memorable read. I saw how characters’ decisions that seemed innocent at first had long-reaching consequences. The chapters are short and the story moves at a pretty quick pace, so there wasn’t a moment of slowness in the pages. The four or five swear words stood out to me because they didn’t seem to add anything to help the reader understand the emotions of the characters. I believe that the story is one of hope, compassion, closure and learning to acknowledge there can be new days ahead. My rating is 4 stars. What is she going to do? How are she and her two sisters going to survive? The year is 1908 and the place is Des Moines, Iowa. Hannah’s parents have recently died and only left their daughters a small amount of money. The money has run out and the girls have no way to tend the family farm or pay the second mortgage their father took out on the property. The bank forecloses and sends Lincoln Cole to give the girls the news. His law firm represents the bank. He dislikes this particular task he has been assigned, one of throwing orphans out in the streets. He’s just doing his job, right? Hannah hopes to never lay eyes on Lincoln Cole again. Hannah, as the oldest in the family, hopes to get a job with the telephone company as a telephone operator or Hello Girl as they are called. She can then support herself and her two younger sisters. Her dreams of returning to law school will have to be put on hold for now. However, the Hello Girls are subject to stringent rules and Hannah has never been one to follow rules to the “T”. My goodness, she has to raise her hand in order to blow her nose or scratch her neck! Can she survive being caged up all day? Lincoln is upset he was assigned the job of throwing the Gregory sisters out of their home. He arrives to help them move to the city and soon inserts himself whenever possible into their lives, especially Hannah’s life. He is smitten with her; he loves her spontaneity and independent spirit. Can she forgive him? Lincoln soon is in love with her and discovers she feels the same about him. However, some try to discourage Lincoln from his relationship with Hannah as she has no social standing and no money. She can’t help his political aspirations. Lincoln begins to ask God to show him what career path he should take. He is a successful lawyer and had thought to follow in his father’s footsteps. Is Hannah the one for him? One of the things I liked in this story was Hannah’s younger sister, Tessa. She is 14 going on 40! She is smart, funny and has mature insight into some of her sisters’ problems. Hannah and her other sister Charlotte don’t always appreciate Tessa’s candid speech, which sometimes leads to more hilarious comments from Tessa. The sisters have promised to support each other in achieving their dreams, and it was touching to read about this familial dedication. I also liked Hannah’s spontaneity. There is a funny scene involving a row boat, a lake and…well, you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens. The love Lincoln shows to Hannah in the things he does to make her happy is inspiring. The love that blossoms between the two is evidenced by their kindness and self-sacrifice for one another. All-in-all this is a charming romance that is ideal to pass the time with on a rainy day. My rating is 4 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book. Her husband of 16 years died three months ago, leaving their family in extreme financial debt. He had been in charge of the family finances, so Mia had no idea things were so bad. Now she is faced with returning to the work force full-time and teaching a course at the local college to pay bills. What other secrets was her husband keeping? Her son is facing peer pressure as a freshman in a new school and her young daughter begins having night terrors. In addition, she loses her best friend when she is shot while they are talking on the phone. Mia is grateful for her job, but wonders if her boss remembers how to be a caring human and not just concerned with his re-election campaign. Mia is chosen to prosecute her best friend’s case in addition to another case of a teenage suicide due to bullying. Her boss doesn’t want her to pursue the bullying case, but Mia is adamant that it is the right thing to do as a child has been killed. She is teamed with Charlie Carlson a homicide detective for both cases. In the past, Charlie caused Mia to lose a case and she has never forgotten or forgiven him. As they investigate both cases, Mia and Charlie both learn that things are not as they appear. People that should be trustworthy aren’t. Will Mia and Charlie realize this before something terrible happens? Mia also wonders at the radical change in her father. As a child, before her parents divorced, she remembers him yelling a lot, being impatient a lot and being gone a lot. Now, he goes to church and is even thinking of going on a mission trip! Can people truly change? Mia desperately wants this change to be permanent, but is waiting for a reversion to his old self. Will she again be disappointed by someone pretending to be someone they are not? Mia tries to teach her son right from wrong in the choices she makes and the decisions she enacts in her family and professional life. Isn’t that what all parents strive for? Her son’s football coach is another example of a young man trying to teach teenagers that their word is worth more than just the paper they signed. He isn’t just interested in winning a football game at any cost, but in teaching these boys how to become men. This is just a great story full of suspense, angst, emotions; it is real life. Although a fictional account, I could readily relate to some of Mia’s problems and emotions. Great descriptive words and a well-thought out plot made me feel I was there in the story. I hope there will be many more Mia Quinn mysteries to enjoy. You will not be disappointed with this book as you fly through the pages to the exciting conclusion. My rating is 5 stars. They arrive in Bloomfield, Illinois at Myron’s creepy house that is situation right next to a cemetery. There is a cantankerous old caretaker named Jason who has prepared the house for their arrival. They both hope to be in town for about a week. Lynn is unsure what her welcome will be after leaving her hometown 35 years ago to marry at the young age of 18. Rachel is unsure what to do with the rest of her life as she has just graduated from Bible college. Once settled in the house, Jason informs them of a mystery Myron was working on up until his death. He had asked Jason to tell his sister about the mystery so she could try to solve it. Rachel is enthusiastic about solving the mystery, but Lynn doesn’t want to stay around to do so. She is anxious to get back to her home as she doesn’t like change. They soon discover Myron’s journals and read them, but discover no new information to help them in their search. A man’s reputation has been sullied for several decades as people thought him a liar and a thief. Myron believed in his innocence and soon Rachel and Lynn do too. How can they prove it? What happened to the money? Rachel along the way is pursued by two handsome young men, one an accountant and one a youth pastor. Rachel receives timely reminders from her mother to make sure a relationship with either man is God’s will and not hers. Lynn receives reminders from her daughter to pray before making decisions. They work together to clean Myron’s house, take care of each other and encourage each other. Lynn is also reminded that peer pressure can only be effective if she allows it to be. Is it God’s will for Lynn to move back to Bloomfield? This novel was slow-moving and had very little action. I did like the mother and daughter relationship dynamic and their guidance of one another to put God above all else. It also was a pleasure to read about a young man thoroughly devoted to God. I thought the mystery subject matter weak and the resolution of it not credible. My rating is 3 stars. Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book.
