I love the words he chooses to say something. I first read The Pit and the Pendulum when I was in eighth grade and I remember hating Poe because he used so many words to say something simple and it really frustrated me, but now I think its beautiful. He can turn something mundane into something poetic.
I also especially enjoyed Hop-Frog and The Murders in Rue Morgue.(less)

It went by so fast, and not because I was storming through it. Because it felt like there wasnt really that much to it. There were lots of great characters, including Cas and Anna, and the story was interesting, but it didnt really grab me. It felt a little rushed, and Anna and Cas' relationship didnt have enough time to develop. I loved Anna and I was always looking forward to scenes with her. I loved how Cas was spending all his free time there, talking to her in the middle of the night when he cant sleep. It was really sweet. I was looking forward to their relationship becoming more complicated and maybe a little intense. But it didnt. They focused on the task at hand and didnt really talk about them, which was a little disappointing, but that could just be my personal preference. Not enough angst. :P But it was really good. Different from anything I have read before. Kinda gory. But I look forward to more of Anna and Cas.(less)

This book is extremely unique and I cannot think of anything to compare it to, or a certain audience to recommend it to. I am not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing.
Its about Jenny, obviously, who cant touch anyone without giving them a plague and killing them. Eventually she meets Seth, a boy who has a healing touch, the opposite of Jenny, so they can touch each other. Eventually they realize that there is another like them at their school. Ashleigh, whose touch causes great desire. This is where things get weird. Anyone who touches her wants her bad. She can also channel her power into others, to make them want each other instead of her. She uses this ability to manipulate everyone she knows, even to make rivals or enemies sleep with someone and ruin their life. Ashleigh is a psychotic bitch and she is super creepy. And she has manipulated most of the town and they are all freaky. The only normal people are Seth, Jenny, and her dad. It all made me rather uncomfortable. Its beyond weird, and pretty gross and monstrous at the end. And on top of that there is a lot of explicit sexual content which is really weird for a YA. There was even a scene of a three-some of sexual favours, which was super gross.
The pros are that I really felt for Seth and Jenny. They fought hard to be together. They really didnt deserve all that Ashleigh put them through. Even if Jenny did go kinda psycho herself in the end. I think Ashleigh's ultimate goal was to rule the world (yeah, she's that crazy), so she saw Seth and Jenny's power as a threat. And I also really liked the ending. We finally found out what Jenny, Seth, and Ashleigh are. They arent a mutation, or a government experiment. They are something else more unique than usual for these stories about kids with powers. It was a nice twist, and it was great that Jenny and Seth got to find out in the end. I am not sure if I would recommend this or not. I have no idea what kind of people would enjoy it and who wouldnt. I am sure there are those that would. It isnt necessarily bad. It was well written with some good characters. It was just so absolutely out-there, bizarre, and a monstrous nightmare at times. I dont plan on reading the next one in the series.(less)

Its still YA but I wouldnt recommend it for those too young, or those with week stomachs.
Eden is a supernatural being called Blessed. They have extremely dark impulses. Extremely dark. She has grown up to the sounds of screams coming from the basement of her family home her whole life. Now that she is starting to get the urges too she is fighting them, because unlike the rest of her family, she has a conscience because she is only half Blessed. Her best friend Noah knows what she is although Eden doesnt know that he knows. She thinks that if he knew he would hate her and leave. But he is trying to save her from it.
Its a very dark world that Samantha Young created, and it is fascinating. Eden's struggle is intense and you cant help sympathizing for her. She went through so much that she didnt deserve. But she was so strong. And I cant help sympathizing for Noah either. Poor guy was so torn. How do you come to terms with having feelings for someone like Eden? She has so much darkness in her. But Noah was amazing. He never gave up on her and he could always see the good in her, even when she was trying to eat him. I cant wait to see if a relationship develops between them. He must have strong feelings for her in order to overcome that. A romance was not explored in this book but I definitely see it happening.
I am also excited to learn more about their world and their history. They seem to have a lot of mythology behind them and I cant wait to learn more about where they came from. This ended a bit abruptly so I will be reading the second, Blood Past, right away. I highly recommend this for paranormal fans who love dark new worlds and a little mythology.(less)
