It didn't happen for me and if the future series installments are like this one? I'll be skipping them.
There are some romantic comedy series that I love - like the earlier installments of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. There are highjinks and funny lines, but it's never so much that it's annoying. And I'm still hot for the hero/hereos...Just the complete opposite for me with Seduction and Snacks. It felt like nearly every other line was a joke or comedy bit - it was too excessive for me. And no - it's not because the humor was crude; it was just too much (quantity). It was excessive to the point of distraction. So much so, I didn't care about the love scenes or interactions with the h/h. I even had to ask myself at one point, "Wait - did they have sex yet?" - because I forgot. Because I wasn't at all invested in the couple.
You'll either love this book...or really not enjoy it.
The Audiobook: The narrator's voice for the heroine's internal thoughts vs. the hero's internal thoughts was too similar! I like first person POV just fine, but it was sometimes hard to tell who was speaking. I read similar review comments from folks that read the paperback...I imagine it was 10 times harder with the audiobook. ...more
The New Year means catching up on reviews I’ve been meaning to write forever.
I was supposed to love this book. My closest IRL New Adult fangirlfriendThe New Year means catching up on reviews I’ve been meaning to write forever.
I was supposed to love this book. My closest IRL New Adult fangirlfriends LOVED Real. I even made one of them a custom ‘Real’ mug for Christmas - that’s how hard she’s been raving…But it didn’t work for me… And it’s all Brook’s fault.
Remy – the sexy, volatile underground fighter with anger issues? He mostly worked for me. But let me get back to Brook.
She made a very thoughtful career choice in becoming a physical therapist after suffering a potential Olympic career-ending injury. She wants to help others overcome their injuries or prevent them all together as her practiced trade….Great on paper, right? Very admirable, yes? But she’s JUST incredibly boring. For me, there no was spunk. More than once during Real, I found myself longing for Abby Abernathy, from Jamie McGuire’s Beautiful Disaster – an NA I read multiple times last year. You spend this entire book in Brook’s POV, and it just wasn’t a place I cared to be. Heroines don’t need to do crazy, wild things to keep my interest, but I needed…something…from her…and I just wasn’t getting it.
Equally troubling, I felt like Brook spent most of this book begging for Remy to have sex with her. It dragged on and on and on…night after night of kissing and cuddling. Remy didn’t want to take that step with Brook until she “fully knew him” or “knew what she was getting into”…or bla bla bla….Honestly, my memory’s cloudy on his exact wording, but bottom line? Remy wasn’t putting out and Brook came off as moany and pathetic. Here’s one example: “Why haven’t you touched me? Why don’t you fucking take me? Am I too fat? Too plain? Do you just delight in fucking torturing me senseless or are you just damn mean?” ….I finally texted a Real fangirlfriend and I told her the book was killing me and testing my patience. I thought, whatever’s holding Remy back, it can’t possibly be that bad…nothing can justify dragging it out like this. Well, I did eventually find out Remy’s secret - And NO – I don’t think it justified all those nights of just kissing & cuddling.
Oh my God…and how could I almost forget? Overfucking, as in overuse of the word “fuck” in places where I don’t think it belongs. “…he fucks my ear with slow…” Ear fucking. About 3 separate instances. “‘Brook Dumas.’ He just fucked my name right in front of me.” Name fucking. These uses just didn’t work for me – I personally found them distracting.
Despite my issues with Brook in Real, I will eventually finish this series if only to get to Remy (Book 3) and read his POV. Now that I know his secret, I think it’ll be interesting to be in his head. But I'm definitely in no rush. ...more
