I felt like a lot of the cliff hangers were just too easy to figure out right away and the book was somewhat predictable. I liked the darkness and depth of some of the characters. The last event in the book, when Anna, Rachel and Tom were all together seemed so predictable and unrealistic. Yes I get that it's fiction and not necessarily meant to be realistic but, meh, I dunno... Just didn't thrill me. Liked the fact that Rachel stops drinking at the end. But that again was fairly predictable. All in all was a decent book and a page turner though. ...more

BUT I REALLY DID ENJOY THE BOOK SO 3.5 IT IS.
BEWARE MY REVIEW IS PRETTY MUCH OVER FLOWING WITH SPOILERS!!!!
This was a super easy and fun read.. I was sucked in from the beginning and finished it in a day. I liked the premise and the experience I had reading it, however I felt that a lot more could have been elaborated on and described more vividly to really paint a picture and put you in another world. I felt like so much of the book was skimmed over and predictable. You know from page one that she's going to win the whole thing and there isn't much conflict within the book to make you second guess it.
I also didn't like the many "pff yeah right' moments I had while reading.. For instance, the very last fight, when Katniss has a couple of wide open opportunities to shoot a freaking arrow into Cato's temple but doesn't because 'oh no she's distracted by a dog/person' and 'oh no what about peeta' UMMMMM OK GIRL: (me yelling at my book) 'If you would just stop wasting your arrows on these dumb dogs and kill Cato right away, the dogs will disappear and the games will be over' (til the rules change but she doesn't know that yet). She was so thoughtful and smart until that point and then totally let me down.
Also, when the 'feast' occurs and Clove just sits on top of Katniss tracing her face with a blade and practically sitting there having a conversation with her, and then Thresh swoops in and just lets Katniss go.. Ok at that point I was so irritated. I wish that whole scene was just more realistic, like Katniss coming close to death and then escaping it because of her speed or arrow skills or some kind of cunning... The way Collins wrote this part was really anti climactic and had me literally rolling my eyes saying 'ughh really?' ..
I also didn't like how freely Katniss was able to just roam around the forest, spearing animals and wandering around. There should have been much more anxiety and looking over her shoulder moments..
Also, it was pretty dumb with the whole intercom thing saying 'the rules have changed' and then 'ops actually no the rules haven't changed, just kidding' and then 'ok ok you win the rules HAVE changed'... It made me feel like Collins was just making up everything as she went along.
But like I said, all in all it was a fun book, a quick escape from reality and a cool premise. I just think the details in the book could have been thought out better and elaborated more, to make the whole thing more real, believable, thrilling, etc... I will be interested in how the movie reflects the book and I probably will read the next two just for the fun of it. I am also kind of interested in seeing what happens when Katniss sees her hunting friend and her family, and then what happens with the whole 'I faked that I loved you but I really do love you but I'm gonna keep pretending that I fake love you and then ignore you when I miss you' deal with Peeta. Thanks for reading my review. Happy Hunger Games :)...more

So much of what they explained was so accurate and there is a lot of useful information worth the read for not only the significant other of, but the ACOA as well. Quick and easy read, however the writing style wasn't my favorite. I got a little burnt out with the "jack and Jill" storytelling as well. Sift through the stories to get to the meat and potatoes of the book- would definitely recommend. ...more
