The magic here is fascinating, and it earned itself an extra star just because of the dragon, but it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining to read as I'd hoped.
Vanya as the narrator was frustrating, because he's been raised by King and kept innocent of so much in their world. So every character knew more than he did, about everything, and even the little he did know he didn't always choose to share with the reader.
So being trapped in his head while basically all he does is nap and bitch about wanting to go after King and tell us how hot Nash is had me feeling more disconnected from the fascinating world than I wanted to be.
And having everyone be fine with him making out with and then waking up in bed with one of the snake shifters completely lessened my interest in the growing romance.

Dean is cursed to only be able to tell the truth. He and Sam have both been trying to hide how they feel about each other, and Dean has to get creative to try to not reveal himself.
Favorite Quote: "Some people say Karma's a bitch, but I prefer to think of it as... discerning."
"So if you do want me, I swear I'm yours for the taking."
"Pie is fleeting, Sammy. You are forever."

I love how everything progressed just enough to keep me excited to read the next one, but not frustrated that nothing happened in this installment. Caleb and John are adorable how they dance around what they both want, but worry the other one doesn't. Possibly my favorite thing about this book is (view spoiler)[that John finally stands up and actually ASKS for what he wants instead of just continuing to angst over what Caleb might be thinking. (hide spoiler)]
But then another possible favorite is getting to know Gray better, and seeing how being in Caleb's head is changing his understanding of the world and his place in it.
But then there's also the fantastically well-described plantation and the insanely awesome scenes that happen there.
So much to love here! I'm actually really glad I waited to read this because now I can go right on to #3 without having to wait!
Favorite Quotes: "You are distracting us from the hunt with your foolishness."
Gray was ignoring him very loudly.
But there is only ever now.
"Oh, and Mr. Jansen? You obviously have a problem with authority. I suggest you get the fuck over it."
"Why do you wish this? To forget?" Caleb rolled on his side. Because sometimes remembering the good things hurts.
Occasionally bitching about it, yes, but complaining was just part of his personality.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>(less)

Ron and Hermione are sublimating their sexual frustration into other hobbies: Ron into suspecting Draco of every nefarious plot imaginable, and Hermione into learning as much as she can about psychoanalysis.
Harry likes to read the horoscopes every day just for entertainment. Hermione tries to use this to analyze him. And when the horoscopes keep getting more and more specific, Harry gets more and more confused.
Sweet and silly.
Favorite Quotes: Ron made a gasping sound, not inconsistent with having opened his mouth and inhaled some of his robe.
"I am perfectly comfortable with my sexuality," Harry said between gritted teeth. Unless you think of my sexuality as sitting right next to me and touching me inappropriately.(less)

It makes sense if it were started pre-HBP and finished post-DH.
Dumbledore's portrait decides that it would be entertaining to declare a first-names-only day at Hogwarts. Professors are given permission to take points away from any students attempting to call anyone by their last name.
Speculation as to Dumbledore's motivation only lasts until the next day. Anyone who called someone they had a crush on by their first name is now physically unable to go back to using their last name. Students like Seamus (who Pansy can't call Finnigan anymore) take advantage of the spell to requite their crushes. Students like Draco (who Harry can't call Malfoy anymore) take different advantage of the spell...

And I love the relationship the boys develop together here, how they help strengthen each other and make each other better. Lovely.
Favorite Quote: because while he would have been all right with dying, he wanted to live.
"How can you be content to live in the world without making a difference? Without changing it?"
"If you would just go ahead and declare that you're evil and start laughing on top of buildings already, then they might treat you better."
But he was done keeping secrets from Draco or hoping that they would understand each other by some kind of mental sharing when they'd done no talking.
"I'm just trying to think what would happen if the boys we were at Hogwarts could somehow travel forwards in time and see this," Harry said shaking his head. "How the little you would squint."
"Sometimes I wish that you weren't present at so many of the important moments in my life," Draco mumbled. "If you hadn't seen me lower my wand that time, you'd probably believe I can kill people."(less)

I agree that Yarulf certainly switched loyalties quickly for having been raised and trained as the heir to the throne. But I'm enough of a fluff lover that I actually enjoyed how angst-free that made the story.

I'm not generally a fan of historicals, but the addition of the magic and the tattoos gave me enough hope that this wouldn't be traditional to give it a try.
And it was fantastic! Honestly, there was just so much here to love that it's hard to decide what my favorite thing about it was: -the banter between Lucien and Stephen -Lucien's "fuck 'em" attitude toward the stuffy British attitudes -the way Stephen describes magic, and the way it works in this world -Stephen being this tiny little crazy-powerful person -the FANTASTIC creepiness of Piper and the atmosphere and curses and hauntings that happen there -the TATTOOS!
This was one of those rare books that had me reading more slowly so I could savor it. Seriously witty, I laughed so much, and ended up re-reading so many passages. And everything was so vividly described and fantastically atmospheric, I was delightfully terrified.
So much fun to read, I'm so glad there are more books in the series already out!
Favorite Quotes: He had always found hope harder to deal with than despair. Desapir didn't get disappointed.
"You're wonderful. And your hands are wonderful. Merrick, you should try this, they're like... lots of little bubbles. Champagne! Hands like champagne!"
"This is the drawing room. It probably wouldn't be so bad without the paneling, or the chairs, and if it was in a different house."
"You're Lord Fortunegate. Your ancestor was Lord Fortunegate." "That's how it works."
Crane was not so much a brave man as an obstinate one.
so hopefully it'll all come down to the usual ingredients of a haunting: imagination and indigestion.
"What sort of supplies? I'm not sure we have holy water. Or eye of newt." "I had in mind salt and iron filings, and I'd appreciate it if you could avoid the Macbeth jokes." "That comes up a lot, does it?" "Now and then."
and knocked on the door in a restrained, calm, steady fashion for about five minutes without stopping
"You know, I'm used to people being taller than me, and I really don't find it as intimidating as you may imagine, so you may as well step back."
"The next bloke takes a swing at my lord, I'm going to break both his arms," said Merrick. "And that'll give him trouble when he tries to pick his teeth up. That's all. Nice talking to you ma'am."
"Well, what was that, then?" Crane shrugged. "You seemed tense."
and the elbows were worn, as always happened to his jackets because he always ended up propping himself on his elbows, occasionally in pools of various liquids.
Crane stretched his lips in the shape of a smile.
He swore fluently, inventively and with spectacular obscenity in Shanghainese until he ran out of epithets, switched to English, and started at the beginning again. "You're feeling more yourself, then."
"Isn't there some other way for you to get power?" "Like what?" "Magic wands. Magic rings. The Holy Grail." "You have that here?" "If I do, someone probably carved a magpie on it."
"You're very ... calm." "Well, I've been in a condemned cell before," Crane pointed out. "The novelty wears off."
"It took me years to get those done," said Crane, more or less at random. "I'll want it back."(less)

It was super short, and there were things that I wished were explained better (which coach found Toby in the locker room, for example. Because unless the college is significantly smaller than I can even imagine, I have a hard time believing that the swimming coach would have Griffin's phone number, or that the basketball coach would recognize a member of the swim team who's had his nose broken) but I completely enjoyed how both the friendship and the chemistry between them was portrayed. Especially in such a short story.
And the fact that the girlfriend wasn't a harpy is a definite bonus!(less)
