Lawyer and defender of the underdog, Judy Carrier, finds herself with a plate full of trouble. Her boss wants her to take on defense of a class action suit that she believes is unfair, her beloved aunt is having surgery for breast cancer, her boyfriend is proving to be more self-involved than she can accept, her mother seems to find more and more to criticize about Judy, and her aunt's best friend, Iris Juarez, is found dead from an apparent heart attack.
While getting her aunt prepared for surgery, Judy finds $50,000 unaccounted for amongst Iris's things at her aunt's house. Since Iris is basically a kind, caring, hard working immigrant with no family around, Judy suspects that foul play is involved. With her aunt's illness and desperate plea for Judy to find out the truth about her friend, Judy begins investigating only to find herself in grave danger. Amongst the illegals, there are those too scared to talk, and those who depend on that while carrying out their illegal activities.
Judy is a great character. She manages to get caught up within her law firm's quest for cases that earn money, her own ethical views, and a secret held by her mother and her aunt. The mystery is fast passed and comes right out of today's headlines. I found myself caught between being bothered by the illegals, and being deeply saddened by the individuals that make up this group of people. Though this book is part of a series, I found that it also worked great as a stand alone book too. Now I want to read more about these lady lawyers.

Though Izzy majored in fashion for adults, her pet fashions are cute and practical in the cold Minnesota weather. Unfortunately, the town's environmentally, eccentric, perpetual protester, Sherry, has decided that animals should not wear clothes, and spends the opening day protesting in front of the store. Unfortunate for Sherry, she's found dead behind the store on the same day. Solving the murder sends Izzy throughout the town finding clues to keep her best friend out of the policeman's sight as the number one suspect.
Love all the characters in this book, including a group of personable dogs, a bossy cat, a sneaky guinea pig, and a thieving ferret. The friendship between the three main human characters is different and done really well too. They were best friends through their teen years, then circumstances separated them for a number of years. Solving this murder brought back good and difficult memories that added a lot to the story. The mystery had me stumped, bringing me in as more and more clues were revealed. Definitely looking forward to reading more in this new Pet Boutique Mystery....more

This time around we're learning more about Charlotte Caine. Life as a teen-ager who had just lost her mother was very difficult, so she ate away her pain. Unfortunately, life as an obese teen was even harder. As she helped the town's "super jock", Spencer Gregory, with his homework, she fell for him in a big way, but he just saw a good friend.
Now Spencer has returned to Hope's Crossing from a stent in big league baseball, where he was a super star before he was injured, but he's returning with his own disgrace of public scandal involving drugs and his dead wife. His 12 year old daughter Payton, is non too happy about leaving her friends either.
Once again, Thayne develops serious issues within this love story. "Everybody who went through tough things had to take his own road back. Others could push and guide and help but nobody could chose another's journey for him." Issues of wounded warriors, eating disorders, and self-loathing are developed in extremely interesting ways within this story of community, friendships, hope, and all different forms of love. This series continues to impress me more and more with every book!...more

What happens when two independent people find that sparks fly whenever they're together, and though they both have secrets, they find that they do need each other for life and for love?
Luke, and his brothers, Matt, Mark, and John were know as the "bad boys" of Brazos Bend when they were teen agers. Now, John's murder caused the others to become estranged from their wealthy Dad. They have all become responsible adults, working in different government agencies. For Luke, he's just resigned as a DEA agent after the tragic loss of his partner. He's going off on his large boat for a fishing trip when an unexpected guests shows up asleep in his guest room.
Maggie Kincaid was that "sleeping beauty". She's been living a quiet peaceful life in Brazos Bend, running her business, Home For Now, helping old and infirm people remain in their homes. She has her own notorious and secret past and she's unwittingly gotten herself in deep trouble. She needs Luke's help but he wants no part in more investigations. The problem is that just looking at Maggie is like being drawn to a magnet. Sometimes they stick like magnets, but they also find themselves pushed apart like magnets in reverse polarity. But Maggie's life may just depend upon Luke's help.
This is a roller coaster ride of a romantic mystery. The characters are complicated but so endearing. I soon became very involved with Luke and Maggie, finding myself crying for them one minute and yelling at then another minute. The mystery came with lots of clues but I was guessing until the very satisfying surprise ending. I was left wanting more!! Luckily, Emily March will soon have two books coming out continuing the stories of Matt and Mark....more

Cris De Niro was a high powered head of a major hedge fund until he lost his wife and unborn son in the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11. It was after this event that he bought a group of experts together to create a super counter-terrorism agency.
Their first encounter involves a planned nuke attack over Las Vegas. Iranians, Mexicans and Russians are all involved. Strange gatherings of many people on the Mexican boarder alert the team to possible trouble, but they had to act fast to protect the country and De Niro's remaining family.
I really liked the theme and action of this story. The idea of legal justice and/or moral justice was interesting. Reminds me of some other TV shows and books that follow along this same theme which always conflicts me, but never looses my interest. I listened to the audio which added a lot to the emotions evoked with this story. ...more

Her new assignment sounds exciting because she's going to attend a literary conference of food writers. She's excited and a little apprehensive because her mom's coming from New Jersey to attend with her. But when the popular controversial guest speaker winds up dead in a decorative pool, her mom's "help" causes it's own problems, and once again, Hayley gets caught up in a stew of deadly suspects.
Chapter headings of quotes authors have used about food are fascinating. The characters continue to grow more interesting as we learn more and more about them in this second Key West Food Critic mystery. The inner workings of cookbook authors adds another dimension to this story with clues that send the reader in many directions. Might as well make one of the tasty recipes included in the book, like the Hot Fudge Pie, because the food descriptions will send you seeking something equally luscious to snack upon while you read this foodie mystery. ...more

Last year, in book one, "Copper Star" Timothy Wilde, solved murders in a book that gave much of the history of the Irish immigrants and the conflicts between the Catholics and the Protestants. It's a good idea to read that book first ( THE GODS Of GATHAM) because many characters are carried through into this book. This book continues with murders associated with run away slaves and free blacks in the north. Once again, chapters are headed by quotes about this topic from authors of those times.
Timothy's spunk, bravery, and creative determination to do what is right by law and by moral justice, gets him into trouble with everyone, including his brother Val, who is big in the Democratic Party and continues to be a scoundrel in every sense of the word. The mistress of the brothel from the first book plays a big role in the atrocities of this book. And there are a couple of children who will tug at you heart with their lives and courage.
This historical mystery is very well documented and extremely well written. The story kept me involved with many twists and turns that I was drawn into as Timothy figured out his fast paced world. I listed to this on Audible and found the narration added much to the feeling and emotions evoked in this story....more
