I like Anne Tyler for her characters; they all seem to have a tendency towards exaggerated types versus realistic people, but they are endearing and somehow believable. This book follows one named Macon who is navigating.. bumbling.. through the aftermath of his son's death and his marriage troubles. He learns quite a lot about himself and just in time for the right (in my opinion) ending to the story.(less)

This is not my normal genre but I really did enjoy it and will look out for other books by this author. Paranormal theme but the characters are believable and relatable enough that it doesn't seem silly. I genuinely did find this to be a scary book (and I am a wuss), but it did it's job and in a compelling way. (less)

First of all, after glancing at a common complaint of other reviewers.. yes, the characters do have silly nicknames - Poppy, Biddy, NoNo, etc. I suppose if you find that bothersome, this book will grate on you as those characters are present throughout. It's family dynamic, though. It's evidence of the weird little oddities that define any family, and it fits. No complaint here.(less)

This book could commit a lot of sins but the fact that it's set in Kenya allows it to get away with occasional annoyances (like hello, how many times do we have to reiterate that she's an exotic, black, sleek African princess?). It basically comes down to what appears to be a eager effort on the part of the author to create really compelling, noble, tragic characters, who fall a bit outside the realm of believability as a result. I did think the ending was crap as well.(less)
