There's tension about her boss, there's tension about her coworkers ... this sort of thing would be grueling to live through, but makes for a gripping story.
Around the middle of the book there is a big reveal about what is going on, which did kind of kill the spell for me. I must be more into figuring out what's going on than making sure justice gets served. The book carried on with the actual mechanics of how the thing was happening, which did maintain my interest. And more nail-biting inter-personal tension! I think maybe I was expecting it to be more of a mystery than a thriller, and in retrospect, given that it's a thriller, the pacing isn't so odd.
I found this to be a very inventive book, and I am now curious about what else the author has written! ...more

There are effectively two protagonists in The Dead Key, and I enjoyed the juxtaposition of these two working women whose stories are twenty years apart. Pulley does an admirable job narrating in two distinct voices.
I did have a bit of trouble keeping some of the male secondary characters straight in my head. All of the bankers sounded alike to me, and by the time of the plot's climax, I was pretty confused about who was who.
The circumstances of the story create lots of interesting ethical dilemmas, and they are presently richly and in a believable manner.
After scanning other reviews, I see that a lot of people aren't fans of Iris. I think she's a very believable character. She's far from a saint, and she does some extremely stupid things, but her decisions are believable; they make sense in her context. I was more curious about Beatrice's story because it is mysterious and the sense of danger looms larger, but I found myself relating to Iris. Iris is certainly not a heroic figure, and that is totally fine with me. I generally find that antiheroes make for better stories, actually. ...more

I slowed down once I encountered the why of the desecration, which struck me as weird and unsupported by the rest of the story so far. It just didn't seem to fit.
Alright, the twist at the end was kind of cool, but didn't make up for the other 100 pages that for me, didn't work.
At any rate, first 300 pages, yay! Last 100 pages, nay!

I enjoyed the rich cast of wonderfully flawed characters - no paragons of personality in this book. All of the characters appear to be a believable mix of noble and ignoble, which I think is a marker of books I enjoy. Hey - none of us are angels or demons, but we may behave like one or the other from time to time. ;)
I personally did not enjoy the cryptography aspects of the book so much, but people who are into that sort of thing might really like it. The same goes for the book-geek and film-geek info - I breezed right through that without comprehending much of it. (I did read this for fun, not education. But as a bonus I do now know what secretary hand is, and I'm curious about Polish films. And Chinatown. I've never seen it, and one of the books' main characters would probably write me off as subhuman because of it. :P)
The last quarter of the book was a whirlwind. Given information from an unreliable narrator and motivations that didn't quite add up, my mind was racing to figure out what was going on before it was all revealed. I managed to figure some of it out, but not all of it....more
