I have enjoyed Hilari Bell's novels in the past; she always has interesting characters that tend to develop and grow as you get deeper into the book. Her latest book, Trickster's Girl, also has intriguing characters that draw the reader deeper and make you want to read the book in one sitting.
Although this book is set in the year 2098, it is not a dystopian novel--not yet anyway. 15 year old Kelsa is barely moving through life; her father just died of cancer and she can't imagine her world without him.
Then she meets a mysterious boy called Raven and her whole world is turned upside down again when she witnesses Raven shape-changing from a boy to a raven, from a boy into a fish and other amazing magical tricks that she doesn't quite believe are real.
Raven needs Kelsa to be the conduit to heal the powerful ley lines that humankind has almost ruined by this point. An incomprehensible, unstoppable tree plague that began in the Amazon rainforests is slowly creeping northward and is killing all the trees.
Will Kelsa believe Raven's story and take on this enormous task? And how can one lone teenager heal the planet? Read Trickster's Girl to find out.
Hilari Bell will be releasing the final book in this duet, Traitor's Son April 2012.

It appears that her cousin Charlotte, is the destined one. From the earliest age, Charlotte has received extensive training in all the aspects to blend into the past including fencing, historical fashion, and detailed historical facts and important people of different time periods. All of this training is rather secretive and leaves Charlotte little time for a normal life.
Gwyneth feels relief that she is not part of this whole mysterious business. She spends her time with her best friend watching movies, texting, and dreaming of all the handsome boys she might want as a boyfriend--in other words, a rather normal life for a teenager.
Gwyneth does have a rather peculiar ability--she can see and communicate with ghosts.
As you might imagine, it turns out that Gwyneth has the time-traveling gene and finds herself woefully unprepared for her experiences. But, she has an unwilling partner in her travels. Gideon, a nineteen old young man who is scornful of the lack of experience that Gwyneth has. Gideon feels that Gwyneth is only a burden, someone to tolerate.
However, Gwyneth has some surprises for Gideon and lots of adventures are in the future for the both of them.
A clever, humorous, tale of two young people who are trying to complete a mission that Gideon wholly believes in and Gwyneth is skeptical of. The fireworks between the two of them are not to be missed!
Although all three of the books have been released in Europe, the publisher (Henry Holt) is slowly releasing them in the US. Book Two, Sapphire Blue will not be released until Spring 2012. That is pretty sneaky, when everyone will be waiting for the next book.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a fun read!
