Charley Davidson is one of the funnier characters I have read recently. She’s sarcastic and has a tendency to end sentences with either something snarky and inappropriate or a funny-in-the-obvious-way quip. This is the first urban fantasy/paranormal romance since the Kate Daniels series that successfully kept me laughing all the way through while also pulling me through the full spectrum of emotions.
The picture I had in my mind of what this book was going to be was actually much different than what it turned out to be. From the synopsis and the bazillion reviews I have read of this book, I knew Charley was a Grim Reaper. However, I found that she isn’t exactly what you would picture for the traditional Grim Reaper. No hood and scythe. She’s not roaming around the underworld chasing down lost souls. It’s nothing like that. Although the book does have some heavy content, the humor keeps the whole thing light. For the most part, anyway.
There are a few darker moments in this book. There are some memories that will bring you up short and make you all teary eyed. Charley’s “talents” haven’t always brought on a welcome reception and there are a couple of memories she recounts that really are a little heartbreaking to witness. It really makes you understand how she became who she is and why she makes the choices she does in life.
First Grave on the Right also has some great supporting cast. Cookie, the woman that works with Charley at her office, is HILARIOUS. Charley’s Uncle is gruff but also a super sweet man who absolutely ADORES Charley. Swopes…..I don’t know how I feel about Swopes yet. I’ll have to get back to you on that one after I read the 2nd book.
And then there’s Reyes. Oh my….. I will try to explain this better than I explained it to a friend of mine. Everyone knows how much I love the character of Jericho Barrons. As far as literary leading men go, he is so the top dog in my eyes. I put Curran Lennart from the Kate Daniels Series and Bones from the Night Huntress series battling it out at #2. Reyes is following super-close behind in 3rd place. Yes. Yes, he really is THAT awesome. But I can’t tell you WHY because that would be giving away a plot twist that I sooooooooooooooooooooo did not see coming. And once that little bomb drops on you, Charley’s life story becomes MUCH deeper and has MUCH more meaning behind it. It’s a good one. You’ll love it.
Being urban fantasy/paranormal romance, there is some sex. As good as the sex scenes were, this book has one of the hottest non-sex scenes I have ever read. Seriously. For people that never even come CLOSE to boning, that scene was filled with an insane amount of tension!!! Amazingly written. Never thought that two people NOT having sex could be so hot.
Overall, I am giving First Grave on the Right 4.5 stars! A highly entertaining read with a good mix of mystery and romance.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go start Second Grave on the Left. Wink wink

Caged could very possibly be one of the best Urban Fantasy novels I have ever read. Coming from me, a die-hard lover of urban fantasy, that’s saying something! I can honestly say with no hesitation that there isn’t a single thing I dislike about this book.
From page one, I instantly fell in love with the main character, Ruby. She’s independent, sassy, sarcastic and (much like myself) she has an uncontrollable (albeit totally justifiable) addiction to fabulous footwear. She’s an artist and an all-American girl wrapped into one. To top it off, Ruby lives in Portsmouth New Hampshire, the state where both the author and I live. I heart Ruby. She’s just fantastic.
This book has a little bit of everything. It is almost non-stop action from beginning to end and the parts that are not action filled are meaningful dialog that helps to build the story (instead of fluff to fill pages). There is drama and intrigue. There are many twists and turns. There is mystery, danger and comedy. There is anger and love. And what story wouldn’t be complete without a few somewhat steamy scenes?? Caged has got them! I don’t think that I could put a label on what type of story this is because the book covers so many different feelings and facets of life.
Amber Lynn Natusch has a major hit with Caged. She has developed an original storyline that will keep you burning through the pages. I started reading this book a little over 24 hours ago and was finished this morning – that’s on top of working my normal day job. She’s got a great cast of characters that will instantly win any audience over. Caged is a complete and total hit in my eyes and I, for one, can not wait for the next in the series to be released!
Overall, this is an amazing book. Very well written. Good characters. Great storyline. Caged gets 5 stars!!!

Since I hadn’t read the series, they were also super cool enough to send me a copy of Eyes to See.
I will admit, right out of the gate I was excited to read Eyes to See because I think that this book has a seriously bad ass cover. In my reading experience, no book full of bad writing has a cover THAT bad ass. So I got started!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!
I went into Eyes to See not really sure what to expect. The best I can come up with for what type of book Eyes to See is would be….take urban fantasy, mix with a some classic suspense/thriller, combine with a serious dose of the supernatural/paranormal and then add just a pinch of humor and a dash of testosterone. That’s Eyes to See. As funny as this may sound, fans of the show Supernatural would TOTALLY dig this book. Also, I don’t know many guys that read urban fantasy. The genre as a whole tends to be more aimed at females. However, I strongly feel that Jeremiah Hunt would appeal to a lot of guys and I highly recommend it for men as well as women.
Jeremiah is a fun character. He’s been stricken by grief over the disappearance of his daughter and then his wife giving up hope and turns to an act borne of pure desperation. It has left him cold and cynical and jaded but still soft enough that he experiences fear. He’s not so hardened that he will go into any situation, guns a blazin’. Take all that darkness and picture it with a nice sarcastic sense of humor. Ah!! My kind of character to follow. I fell in love with this guy right away. He’s not your typical urban fantasy hero with the bulging muscles and perfect hair but he’s feels very real.
This book takes you on a wild ride, introducing you to Hunt and the rest of the supporting cast. We learn a LOT about Hunt and how he got to where he is now, who he used to be, why he does what he does. We also meet some great characters, not just Hunt.
Oh! And the Big Bad of this book – oooooh, he’s a CRUEL bastard. I love it!
A note in regards to the series as a whole – it is a good thing that I read Eyes to See before I picked up King of the Dead (Jeremiah Hunt #2). This series is most certainly NOT a series you can read as standalone novels. However, after reading Eyes to See, I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to miss out on this book anyway!
I am giving Eyes to See 5 stars! A fantastic start to a really promising series! I will definitely be following this series to the end!
TWO SIDE NOTES: Stay tuned for my review of King of the Dead (Jeremiah Hunt #2)!! Also!!! We will be interviewing the author, Joseph Nassise VERY soon on PureTextuality.com so keep an eye out for that as well!!!

I am fortunate enough to have the honor of being great friends with the author and she allowed me to read Bad Blood when it was still being called “Untitled Vampire Novel”. And I loved it. Right out of the gate.
Well, as time has passed and Ginny moved into the world of publishing, she became very serious about getting this book published. A brain storming session birthed the idea of Bad Blood and it fit so perfectly, there was no hesitation.
About two weeks ago, the fully edited version of Bad Blood hit my desk. Not really. It hit my email inbox but whatevs. The already fantastic novel had been buffed and polished to a shine! I reread it and here are my thoughts.
Tori is Ginny is Tori is Ginny and on and on and on into infinity. Ginny Lurcock is a rarity in the writing world. She possesses this unbelievable talent to write hard emotional situations but also never takes herself too seriously. The result is a sense of humor that, regardless of what she writes, you can’t miss! As I read through Bad Blood, it was obvious that Ginny’s sense of humor was poured into this character. She’s witty and charming and awkward all balled into one. As a teenager, life is rapidly changing as it is. Add a cutesy wootsy male best friend and a hot boy in town throwing some attention her way and things start to get a little wonky. Aaaaaaand queue the uncontrollable laughter….
Solving the big mystery that surrounds this new man in her life and barely being able to keep her hormones in check has Tori getting all mixed up and flustered left and right. You follow her as she learns things not only about the people surrounding her but also about herself.
Tori isn’t the only great character in this book either. She’ll make you *gigglesnort* (ßa Ginny Lurcock phrase I happen to love) but she’s not the only one. This book has a wonderfully entertaining cast all around! Tori’s habit of expelling verbal vomit when she gets nervous is just HILARIOUS. My other favorite character is this book is Quinn, hands down. I don’t want to say too much about Quinn because I don’t want to blow a rather large plot point.
Then there’s the big mystery of the book. It’s well written and not at all predictable. And it keeps you guessing right up until the end.
And I LOVE the ending!!! This was actually reworked from the first time I read it and the new version rocks. It’s left WIDE OPEN for the series to continue and I, for one, can’t wait to see where this story goes.
Overall, I am giving Bad Blood (Bad Blood #1) a solid 5 stars! This is a must read that will keep you laughing, even in the midst of the most intense moments you could imagine!(less)

Ah yes! Amber Lynn Natusch is an evil bitch. Plain and simple.
Now, before all of you out there in the Caged fandom come at me, let me also state that I told her this to her FACE. Ok, that’s a lie. But I did tell her in an instant message with tears streaming down my cheeks.
Scarred was a painful book to read. There is an event at the end of that book that will rip your heart out, stomp on it with football cleats and doesn’t even have the decency to put it back for you. It is PAINFUL. I think part of me even held a little resentment toward ALN for making me go through that awful experience with characters I love.
Ugh!! And then what happens AFTER the horrible event!!! That’s just as bad.
Well, once Scarred was behind me, I thought I was past the pain and could move on with my life…err, the story! Move on with the STORY. *shifty eyes*
Not. So. Much.
Yeah, remember that heart left stomped on the pavement??? ALN is back and in Fractured, she pulls it BACK OUT and pours salt on your wounds.
The horrible event I speak of gets brought back up in a very RAW way. The story line proceeds from when Ruby returns and everything is going along, smooth like butta’! Then BAM!!! Sadface.
You know what happens after people die?? That’s right. You have a funeral to attend.
Oh my GAWD I cried like a big bitch! And I was too heartbroken to be ashamed. And that resulted in an instant message to the author stating “you’re an evil bitch”. Except at the time, I was upset and I didn’t use the word ‘evil’. Instead, it was an F-bomb. And she laughed and laughed.
Fractured is all about consequences and Ruby has a boatload to face when she gets back. Although, I found myself reminding the characters (out loud, mind you!) that it was SCARLET in the driver’s seat when the event in Scarred went down. I am happy to report that it becomes clear pretty quick that they understand that but it also shows how hard it can sometimes be to remember that although Scarlet and Ruby share a body, they are two very difference personalities. They may inhabit the same building but they are definitely two different souls. To the people on the outside (or in the warpath, as the case may be), it’s just one face so they have to remember to keep that distinction fresh in their mind.
Let’s take a look at the characters.
RUBY Oh Ruby, you poor, poor thing. I just want to give her a hug. And sometimes, I want to give her a pat on the head….with a hammer. The Ruby we are presented with in Fractured is a MUCH different girl than we met 4 books ago in Caged. She’s been through a lot so far and the shit storms just keep coming. My only wish is that she’d lose the naïve streak she has sometimes. By this point, I feel like she should have a thicker skin and a harder frame of mind. HOWEVER…. At the same time, we as readers need to remember that not a lot of time has passed in Ruby’s world since Caged first began and Ruby has barely had any time to breathe between each crisis she faces. I don’t know how she doesn’t have a rockin’ case of PTSD by now.
SEAN Mmmmm, Sean. Sean has become one of my favorites and I have a little case of Stockholm Syndrome with him. He can act like a complete and total dick and in my head, I’m all “he just needs love. I can change him!” And then, yet again, I have to remind myself that he is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Sigh…. I feel like Sean’s mean streak cleans up a bit in Fractured. Now that there is a clear, defined relationship between him and Ruby, he still has a slightly infuriating Man of Mystery thing going on. He wouldn’t be a good urban fantasy alpha male type if he didn’t though.
COOPER I started getting a little snippy with Coop over the last could of books because the dynamic between him and Ruby was so weird. It felt like a constant “will they or wont they” struggle. Fractured brought some real definition to what they mean to each other. I think it clears up any confusion and gets rid of the love triangle feel that the books were starting to have a touch of. He still doesn’t really like Sean but at least they now have something in common rather than competition – Ruby.
PEYTA Ugh…. Peyta. Sigh. What the hell are we going to do with you? There’s a BIG secret revealed about Peyta in Fractured and to be honest, I didn’t really like it. The storyline is good but felt a little too real-worldy for the Caged series. I voiced this opinion to ALN via instant message while I was in the middle of reading the book and she assured me that the Peyta thing leads to a bigger conversation that needed to be had later on in the book. Fear not, reader! ALN was right. Although the Peyta secret doesn’t feel organic for the book at first, it DOES open up a can of worms later on in a great dialog session. In regards to the secret, I am not even going to hint at what it is. I am just going to say you’ll know it when you see it. There is no missing that shit!
Fractured also brings the arrival of some newcomers to the storyline and I really like them! They’re a good addition. A little sketchy, but good.
Oh!!! And I want to punch Gavin right in his suck hole. He’s a douche and he pisses me off. He may be there to “help” Rubes but I still want to make him feel pain. Every conversation they have causes me to go into a blind rage. He’s the king of dancing around answers and it just pisses me off to no end. I was seriously ready to blow a gasket over him by the end of Fractured.
I am giving Fractured 5 solid gold stars. After the events of Scarred, I didn’t see how this storyline could possibly get any better but I loved Fractured! While reading, someone asked me which was my favorite out of the series and I can honestly say that I can’t pick now. I love each one for much different reasons. Fractured was an awesome addition to the line up! (less)

I started this series last year by surfing the freebies on Amazon. I came across Beautiful Demons, attracted initially by its gorgeous cover and then one day, while looking for something new to read, I gave it a shot. I was instantly hooked and proceeded to blow through the rest of the series over the course of the following week.
That brings us to this moment. After a long (and torturous) wait, Demons Forever, the sixth and final book in the Peachville High Demons series, was finally published. As some of you know, I am busy writing my own book so I didn’t get to read through it as quickly as I would have liked. In the last few days, I have blown through the book and about five minutes ago, I finished it……with tears streaming down my cheeks. Good tears, but tears nonetheless.
Harper’s story continues in this last installment. The fight against the Order is now coming to what could turn out to be a seriously bloody battle. This entire series has been a whole lot of build up to this moment.
And it didn’t disappoint.
I had a fear when I went into this book that it was going to do what we see a lot of series do – build up, build up, build up…..and…..poop. Nothing. Demons Forever could not be any more opposite of that notion. Filled with the mystery that we have all come to love in this series and LOTS of action, Demons Forever is a TOTAL page burner.
Overall, I am giving Demons Forever 5 stars!! I dont want to say too much more about the book because I dont want to give away any spoilers but I can say that this series is a complete body of work that Sarra Cannon should be very proud of! Demons Forever was the perfect ending to an awesome journey! It was amazing but I am truly sad to see it come to an end.

His Black Wings was a twisted, in the future but not future-feeling love story. I don’t think the cover art fit the book at all. Not that it isn’t beautiful artwork….but….I just feel like it was wrong for the story. The story is an entertaining one. I did have to restart the book once but I don’t really fault the book for that. I think my head just wasn’t in it at first. However, I do have to say that this book could have used a bit of decent editing. There’s a lot of first person-third person point of view shifts and I found them a bit distracting. Aside from that, the book was a solid one. It just could have used a round or two of editing.
Overall, I am going to give His Black Wings 3 stars. It’s a good story, it just needed some expert eyes on the editing side.(less)

I spent the better part of the last few months bugging the crap out of the author for any little tidbit I could get (ARC, Cover Reveal, etc). Then I finally got to read it….
And then I had to keep my damned mouth shut about it!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, not anymore! I am happy to announce that Scarred is officially out!
The first thing I would like to point out is the cover. Oh Emm Gee!! The cover!! I have always liked the covers on this series but the cover of Scarred blows the rest of the series away. It’s badassery is levels higher than the previous three books. Each cover has its own meaning and Scarred is no exception. Once you read the book, you’ll understand it. Aside from the symbolism of it all, you have the look. This cover has a much richer feel to it than the previous three. Bah! I just love it!
Ok. On with the review!
The 3rd installment in this series took everything I thought and turned it on end. First, the character that I loved to hate, Sean, has become the character that I love to love. He’s got issues but find me a tough, brooding type that doesn’t. Well, Scarred just added to that love for the character. He sure can be a dick but the thing you’ll learn about Sean through this series is that there is a reason behind his dick…ness. There’s always a reason. In Scarred, we get a glimpse of the softer side of Sean (I so badly wanted to type Sears right there). We get to see a little bit of what makes him tick and you will have one of two reactions: A) You’ll want to file a restraining order or B) You’ll want to give him a big tear-filled hug. It could go either way.
Scarred takes our motley crew of a cast for a whole new wild ride. There are a few surprises tossed in here and there that take our normal tension level and JACK IT WAY UP. One of my favorite characters from early in the series makes a return appearance and you will be shocked by that little twist.
The fourth installment in this wonderful series takes an unbelievably dark turn. Scarred is a highly appropriate name for this book because IT LEAVES YOU THAT WAY. I will be honest, when I was reading this book, I reached the end and promptly emailed the author to inform her that I wanted nothing more in that moment than to PUNCH MY COMPUTER MONITOR.
The ending of this book will make you cry and scream and want to pull your hair out. All in a good way, I swear. Ruby has a big new bag of shit to wade through and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier in book #5.
Overall, I am giving Scarred (Caged Series #4) 5 slobbering werewolf heads. This one will leave you in tears wondering what the eff just happened.
Now, time to go email the author to find out when I will be getting my paws on Book #5 because, dammit, I want to know what happens!!!

I am completely new to Steve Berry as a writer. The King’s Deception was my first trip into his writing and I loved it! He’s probably sick of hearing the comparison (or he’s extremely flattered, who knows!) but if you’re a fan of the Robert Langdon books by Dan Brown or any of the Daniel Silva novels, you would LOVE Steve Berry’s writing style. It’s very rich with history and intrigue. I love a book that leaves me feeling like my IQ got jacked up a few points.
The way this story was told is a style that I like running into but don’t see very often. You start out knowing the end result of the story and then the story is told. It’s not terribly common and I always find this style to be a fun way to approach a book.
The mystery of the book itself is very well woven. You’re kept guessing throughout the entire novel. I did find that a couple of spots in the book seemed to drag a little bit. However, these spots are VERY brief and go right back into fast moving story line.
I would definitely recommend The King’s Deception to any reader who is a big historical thriller fiction buff. You’d be pulled in right away! As this is my first Steve Berry novel, I can say I will most DEFINITELY be picking up more of his books. Love the writing style, love the content, and I think I may have a bit of a professor-crush on Cotton Malone (Confession: I have one on Robert Langdon too so this really isn’t a big surprise. Wink wink).
I give The King’s Deception a well-deserved 4.5 stars!!!

When starting the book, I didn’t really know what it was about. I knew it was classified as epic fantasy and that was about it. Since reading the book, I have found that Mr. Stephens is known for the epic fantasy genre and he has a reputation for excellence in his work. I would have to agree.
Initially, I had a little bit of trouble getting into the book. The beginning is a little slow moving but once the adventure of the tale starts, it really takes off and goes non-stop until the end.
The characters are all very likable and although they’re fantasy creatures, they are easy to relate to. In their own setting, they are challenged with very human issues. As with most other epic fantasy, loyalty is a key theme.
Not having read any of his other work, I can tell you that this book is descriptive enough that you do not feel at a loss for not having familiarity with the world Mr. Stephens has created prior to picking up Of Thieves and Elves.
True to the greats of the epic fantasy genre, Of Thieves and Elves is wordy. So if you have a short attention span, you might want to meditate or do whatever it is that you do to get focused prior to picking up this book. I assure you that the effort will be worth it.
Overall, I am going to give Of Thieves and Elves a solid 4 stars. Well worth the read but a little slow going in. Get over that initial hump for the action to really start and you’ll enjoy the rest of the ride.(less)

So if you’re got a heart condition or a serious problem with girls who have questionable morals, TURN BACK NOW!!!!
Still here?? Gooood!!
I want to preface this review by also stating that I dont read erotica. Not because I have a problem with it. I dont. I’ve just never taken the plunge and gotten into it. I’ll be honest, I have always viewed erotica as nothing more than porn in words. I WAS RIGHT, GODDAMMIT!!! SMUTTY, DIRTY, SMUTTY SMUT!!!!
Nah, I’m just kidding.
As a person, I love Kendall. We have been friends online for a while (thanks for Ginny telling me that I NEEEEEEEEEED to read the Inhale series) and she’s ALWAYS good entertainment. Good education too! She’s where I learned the phrase “holy shitpops!” When she started talking about the release of Strings, I was intrigued by what I am now dubbing as eROCKtica. We are naming the genre. You heard it here first folks. I am making it a thing. eROCKtica. Trademark Pure Textuality 2013. Tell your neighbors.
Well, you might want to be careful who you tell actually…
A few nights before I started reading this book, I went out and celebrated World Book Night with Ginny. We gave out lots of books and dished lots of books. I mentioned to her that I wanted to read Strings and she proceeded to give me a relative warning about the contents of the book. See that warning up above??? That shit is NO JOKE!
This may not come as a shock to some of you but Kendall Grey’s eROCKtica (like what I just did there???) isn’t just porn on a page. From all of Ginny’s ravings, I knew she was a good author but I didn’t know she was next level. Around all the waggling man junk and lovely lady parts, Strings is a GREAT story that I was immediately sucked into. That was not meant to be dirty. Get your mind out of the gutter!
We kick off this book meeting our main character Letty. Right out of the gate, she had me DYING laughing. This chick is beyond funny and completely lacks the ability to use the filter most of us are born with that resides somewhere between our brains and our mouths. Within the first ten pages or so, you are given more than enough proof to know that this chick has ZERO inhibitions about anything. As we make our way to the first sex scene, my reaction was “Oh…….oh god……she’s really gonna…….YEP! She did!! Holy hell!!” Not for the squeamish. That’s all I have to say about that. wink wink
Shades is the male lead in this filthy little story and he’s every bit as much fun as Letty is. No inhibitions. Totally open to “whatever”. Physically, he’s the guy every father on this planet dreads his little princess hooking up with and every mother on this planet secretly WANTS to hook up with. He’s so much fun!
The story is very well written. Usually that much sex in a book you can blow through in one afternoon would seem wasted and forced but (and yes, I am going to use this) it is kind of necessary for the story line. In a weird way, you really see the evolution of the dynamic between these two just in the way they bone.
I am giving Strings 5 lady boners! This was a super-fun introduction into the world of eROCKtica for me. I am sooo going to use the SHIT out of that word now. eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica eROCKtica
In regards to the author, I think it is high time I actually READ the copy of Inhale that has been sitting on my Kindle for months! I am looking forward to reading more of Kendall’s work. She’s knows how to tell a story and tell it well. Even if it is laced with Goerge Carlin’s 7 Dirty Words. Seriously, this chick swears just as bad as Ginny and I. THAT is saying something!(less)
