But then she stumbles upon an unexpected prisoner unlike any she's ever seen. Or touched. Riordan De La Cruz, an immortal Carpathian male, is trapped and caged, his desire for revenge only beginning. She will release him from his bonds. He will release her from her inhibitions. Both have voracious appetites that must be sated.
I have read a lot of negative reviews about this book…mostly based not on the actual stories but on the fact that it’s a reissue of two books, which I think is pretty unfair.
I was aware of that fact and have read Dark Secret but I wanted to read Dark Hunger, the story of Riordan, one of the de la Cruz brothers, the South American Carpathians, that I like in Christine Feehan’s fabulous Dark Carpathians Series – so I am going to “vent” my feelings on the story itself. I have written a review on Dark Secret http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62... and now on with Riordan & Juliette’s love story.
Having met Juliette in other books I was very happy to find a bit more about how she became part of the de la Cruz family. Because the length of the novella, it focused on how the met and became lifemates.
I enjoyed seeing the chemistry between Riordan & Juliette and how she rescued him from his imprisonment, where he had been tortured and cruelly tested, deep in the jungle by evil humans, shape shifters and vampires. Her strength and determination to save him and the jaguar women, is really admirable. She’s a loyal and loving character and endearing. Also liked seeing a gentle side to the usual domineering Carpathians males in Riordian.
What I really like about this series is the sense of family, so apparent in how they all care and look after each.
I have happily added this book to my growing collection of this series. (less)

Jordan Malone has always been an interesting character since I first met him in Wild Card and I was looking forward to finally getting his and Tehya story. After all Jordan has been “hovering” and fantasizing about her for a very long time…so finally we get a peek into their lives.
And what happens??? We have this super alpha male, leader of the “pack”, strong and focused in his job but when it becomes personal and emotional turns into a not so likeable guy…..
He can’t have Tehya because he cares too much for her and doesn’t want to hurt her because she wants love and he doesn’t believe in love, it’s all an illusion to him…and why does he feel this way.??? Because some girl hurt him when he was a younger and he was the cause of one of his operative’s death….pleezzzzz!!!!! Irrational…more like unbelievable.
And then decides to screw Tehya the night before she’s leaving the group and never tries to contact her for nine months……okay, so she left before he knew..but nine months. What an absolute twit!!!!! And eventually when he’s forced to see her again, behaves in such a “cave-man” way that if I was Tehya, I would kick and not kiss his ass.
And Tehya….i understood her distrust of people, the pain she experienced as a child on the run with her mother who was betrayed by family and died to save her daughter’s life..the strength shown to live the life she always dreamed of….but the way she handled herself with Jordan……okay, she’s in love with him…but that’s no excuse to accept the way he treats her. And the cold and dismissive attitude shown towards her colleagues, who want to help and protect her from the many attempts on her life, is really not that good.
The so many..and I mean many…sex scenes between the two became totally boring after the third or fourth time…repeat after repeat…were they just page fillers I wondered!!! I began skimming over these scenes for the remainder of the story. Repetition ruled here….how many times does Jordan have to say…..I’m gonna f..@## your sweet ass”, “so good”, …too many to write about….I felt absolutely no romance and love between them. It was like more of a sex fest than a love one.
The only romantic part in this book is that of Riordan Malone in the cemetery, sitting next to his dead wife’s headstone and talking to her about his love for her and their children and how much he misses her and waiting for the time he will finally be with her again. So lovely, so beautiful.
The plot resolution was a bit of a let-down when we finally discover the truth about Tehya’s mother’s murder but the one thing that is still puzzling me………did I miss the part where we are told why Tehya is born with no pubic hair? Someone please tell me if I did.
If you have read the previous books in this series, then I recommend this one where we get to know more about the uber alpha-males from the secret OPS group. (less)

T...more This is the second time I am reading this book. I love Christine Feehan but I have to be honest and say that this series is not one of my favorites.
There are two stories in this book, which "kick off" the series.
The Awakening introduces the world of the Leopard People that live in the Borneo rain forests and where Maggie has been inherited a home in the jungle, meets Brandt, a shapeshifter, who has been waiting for her return for a very long time.
Rather a short story - around 90 pages - filled with tension and some sexy and erotic scenes.
Wild Rain was for me a much better and longer story….the character build-up was good and I enjoyed the whole connection between Rio, a lonely outcast leopard shapeshifter, living in the Borneo jungle and Rachel, who is being target by some really evil people, who want to kill her. From the first moment they meet – wow….talk about some out there MEETING!!!!!!!, both feel a compelling bond with each other.
I loved the setting and the descriptions were extremely well-written…..my five senses were definitely awakened…….felt the jungle ground, tasted a mango (wooo….some really hot scene with a mango used here by Rio……but you will have to read the book to discover a new delicious way with this fantabulous fruit……), could picture the Rio’s tree house, underneath the jungle canopy and surrounded by huge trees, smelt the orchids and wow, I touched a clouded leopard!!! We are also given a bit of history of the leopard people, their lifestyle and their habitat.
Initially I wanted to give this book a 3 star review because -
-a few scenes dragged on for far too long that I found myself skipping a few pages quite a few times - the sex scenes were also somewhat drawn-out and repetitive
But………. I really liked Rio & Rachel…they are such a lovable couple, who have two clouded leopards for pets……yes I kid you not!!!!!! I thought both very endearing and despite the “badness” that had happened in their lives, could still show kindness and caring to so many others. And I absolutely loved Rachel’s brother, Elijah…….I hope he gets his book too!!!!!!!! So for that I give it a 4 star!!!!!
I am now onto the next book in the series……I think I may have got “hooked” again!!!!!!!! (less)

I look forward to every book that comes out and I was over the moon when Dark Peril came out…which continued the story of Dominic a Carpathian from the Dragonseeker, bloodline, who had in the climax ending of Dark Slayer ingested tainted vampire blood which would identify him as a vampire to enable him infiltrate the vampire camp to find what their plan against the Carpathians and pass the information to the Prince. It was basically a suicide mission but Dominic was tired of not being able to see in colors and feel any emotions and giving up ever finding his lifemate so this would be something he could do for his people before he went into the light to die.
I was so excited that the first thing I did when I arrived home was to open the first page…but halfway through the book my interest began to wane….horrors of horrors…I even skipped some pages….What was going on???? Chapter I thought…where is this story going????
Okay this is Dominic and Solange Sangria, a jaguar shape shifter living in the jungles of Brazil who appeared in previous books – she’s the cousin of Juliette who is Riordan de la Cruz’s lifemate. She's a strong, scarred and fights to save the lives of other jaguar women that are being relentlessly tortured and killed by the jaguar men led by her father Broderick Sangria, the cruel and evil royal blooded jaguar who had killer her entire family when she was a young girl. She is determined in her quest to kill him even if it means her death.
Both have been sharing dreams of each other and never believed that either existed. When they finally meet Dominic realizes that he at long lost has found his lifemate….but can they ever be together…after all he knows his going into his death when he completes his mission. Will they overcome their obstacles and find true love and their HEA??
What did I like about it? *I admired Solange’s bravery and strength and how she wanted to save the jaguar women. Not afraid to face the obstacles in her life *How she gained the confidence in her femininity….she had always seen herself as a women who cared nothing about her soft and gentle side *Having felt distrust and almost a hatred for men she begins to realize that not all men are like the cruel and wicked jaguar men and vampires she has encountered in her life *She has a sense of humor…fun!!!!! Dominic does not want to make love to her…she’s tired of being a virgin….because he’s afraid his tainted blood may hurt her…so what does she think up???? Find him a condom…..and I can finally discover what sex is really like!!!!! And her love for the dragonseeker robe that suddenly materialized out of nowhere….thanks to Dominic’s magic of course!!!!! *Giving her blood to Zacarias de la Cruz, the brother of her cousin’s lifemate Riordan…that scene is absolutely awesome….the courage she has when she tries to help Zacharias as he dangerously get so so close to changing into a vampire….offering him her love and with her words and almost a sense of love which brings him back to reality. Incredible *Love Zacharias de la Cruz…can’t wait for his story….I wonder if Margareta, the human who is attacked by the vampires and is near death is to be his lifemate. I hope so… *The jungle settings are really fabulous. Their steamy cave deep in the jungle, where they spend most of their time… *Ah…a mention of Josef….that crazy teen from Dark Symphony….I wondered when he would appear again…alas only a mention…he’s the hacker who will destroy all the vampire Intel after Dominic sends him the details and plans…I hope he appears in future books. *The *Amazing ending…..not going to spoil it for those who have not read the book…but it’s totally unexpected….I 'm sure we will hear more about this phenomena ….BUT………….
And what didn’t I like about it? *Most of the book is about their relationship…which in itself not a bad thing…but it just went on and on…”No I can’t make you my lifemate…it’s too dangerous…”I want to do it with you” ….”Such a beautiful man”…..”I can’t let him see my body….it’s so ugly…I am not feminine enough for him”,, and on and on….too much repetition.
*Most of the book takes place in the cave and there is not much about the secondary characters….a few pages of fighting the jaguars, killing some vampires and then back to the cave. I would have liked more interaction with characters like Mary Anne, Manolito de la Cruz’s lifemate who I fell in love with in Dark Possession, more of Juliette and her sister Jasmine. Just a few scenes with the jaguar people and Zacarias de la Cruz. I love meeting up with the characters I have met in previous books but here it’s all about Dominic and Solange. Most of the story focus on them and everything else is a quick scene which occurs for a short time and then….you’re back in the cave…and the two of them again!!! The story felt rushed…no real build-up to anything.
*The ending….it kind of ends suddenly…..they kill off the vampires, she begs him to save a possessed kitten…and voila…suddenly next page…THE END!!!!!
*The fact that Dominic had the tainted parasitic blood in him and he was bent on finishing his quest , it was almost forgotten during most of the book….I did not sense the importance of him sacrificing himself….once he meets his lifemate…that’s it…..nothing else matters. *Loved the cover….gorgeous male….even though that’s not how I pictured Dominic in my head. I am not saying this is a bad book…..it’s just not one of my favorites in this series and I don’t think I will read it again…well maybe in a few years to come….not like I have read some of the previous books 3 or 4 times….
So…am I going to buy the next book? Of course!!!! The Carpathians are part of my family and I will continue reading the next books that are published. Christine Feehan is a brilliant writer with an incredible imagination and style and I will continue building up my library with her future books. (less)

I asked as I began reading this book. But as I continued I realized that there was some kind of connection to a previous book I had read in the Dark Series, Dark Symphony. Antonietta Scarletti, Byron Justicano’s life mate is the descendant of Nicoletta and Giovanni Scarletti whose story this book is about. Whilst I am not a lover of historical romance I persevered and I was quite surprised – I actually enjoyed this book. It’s a romance story filled with twists and turns, danger, passion, intrigue, suspense, a family curse …more about that later…..which keeps an hold on you until you turn the last page. The gothic elements are really scary….the Palazzo Della Morte with its dark turrets, evil looking gargoyles and strange and scary characters that live there it’s not a place one would like to visit!!!! And not forgetting the Scarletti Curse where every woman a Scarletti loves will die. The settings in this story are absolutely fabulous….the descriptions are amazing…you almost feel you are there, right there where everything is happening. Nicoletta, the local healer in the village is summoned by the owner, Don Giovanni Scarletti to the castle to heal his niece who is dying from suspected food poisoning. Both are strongly drawn to each other and thought she resists her feelings when returning to her village, she cannot deny Giovanni’s request to marry her. She is such an interesting heroine – strong, passionate, independent, courageous and not afraid to stand up to obstacles in her life. Giovanni is a very interesting hero…tall, dark and handsome both strong and gentle who will fight the evil that threatens to kill not only him but the women he loves. The connection between the two is really fabulous and their journey together keeps you on tenterhooks. You are kept guessing until the end….great writing, great characters. Christine Feehan has such an incredible imagination…I love her writing. Don’t miss this book. Even though it’s not part of the Dark Series it’s still a great read. (less)
