For the longest time, I told myself that I was mostly a fantasy fan that would occasionally indulge in romances as a guilty pleasure...one that I usually hid from my friends because I didn't feel like hearing any comments about bodice-ripping. Once in a while I would let it slip that I was reading paranormal romance, but my regencies and historicals I kept to myself. I'm finally ready to admit it. I'm a romance fan. I like paranormal and fantasy romances, yes - but there is a spot in my heart for historical romance that I just can't deny anymore ;) No longer will I hide my books in my purse or under more acceptable titles. Long live the happy ending!
Okay. All joking aside...I have never really purchased straight to ebooks, because I was afraid the quality would somehow be substandard to a real print book - I'm not talking about self published books (which I still avoid unless they're by an already published author), I'm talking about books like this one and some of the others I've read recently. Aside from a few minor typos and spots that could have used a tad more editing because of redundancy of vocabulary or what not, these ebooks have turned out to be really good reads.
I really like the premise of this one, which is an "old maid" making a marriage bargain with a known scoundrel all for the purpose of revenge. I kept laughing to myself because the heroine was only 40, and the hero was in his early 30s (i think). I am so glad I live today, let me tell you. Being a woman in 2013, while not always easy or fair, certainly is a hell of a lot better than being a woman during the times of the romances I have grown to love.
The romance between the Devil of Devlyn and Sophie was very sweet, and this author has a gift for conveying an emotional truth in her writing and characterization. The ending of this book was perfect - just what the hero and heroine deserved - and by far one of the happiest out of any I've read so far. This is the first romance over which I have become verklempt, so kudos to the author for that. If you read this book, I hope you will root for the couple as much as I did....more
