I was so disappointed by this book. I've been wanting to read it since it was first released, but waited for the paperback release. Part of my disappointment came from my own misconception of what the book would be about. I was hoping for a great character study, but instead I got a story about an immigrant family and an obsession with falling in love. There are actually more pages devoted to the story of Oscar's sister, mother, and grandparents than there are to the story of Oscar. I think Yunior's perceptions and nostalgia for Oscar are the most powerful part of the book. If narrative concentrated more on this than the long tangents into family history I may have actually liked the book. (less)

**spoiler alert** When I first realized this book was going to be about clones, I couldn't help but laugh. I was instantly reminded of a hilarious MST3K episode called "Parts: the Clonus Horror." The author did handle the unoriginal clone scenario in an interesting way. He concentrates on aspects that are usually ignored, and ignores the aspects usually considered thankfully avoiding cliches. Yet, I did still find some of his omissions a bit hard to justify, and some of the character's actions a bit of a stretch. Regardless, I enjoyed the book and thought the characters and their relationships were interesting. (less)
