One of the better parenting books I've read over the past few years, this one specifically focusing on the importance of the Dad/Daughter relationship. I really enjoyed the overall tone of the book, the writing style, and Kelly's ability to discuss a topic from multiple angles. The writing isn't a dry distribution of facts, nor is it too conversational. It strikes a nice balance of opinion, study, and general discussion to look and explore a particular issue. Rightly so, Kelly puts a lot of emphasis on how critical it is for a father to remain and active and positive part of a daughter's life. Leading by example, showing support and interest in her life, and allowing a daughter to grow and become independent remain the common themes throughout the book. None of this is groundbreaking or unknown to most parents, but the discussion and information provided by Kelly is helpful in how to best achieve these goals.(less)

This book starts a little unsure of itself but gains strength and momentum as you keep reading. This is a book about the love a young woman has for her father. She respects him for his qualities and for his failures, using her reading pact with him as a timeline of significant events in her life as she grows from a young girl to adulthood. Reading is the bond that ties them together, but it is obvious there is a respectful and loving bond between the two beyond their nightly agreement to read together. Sometimes the writing is a little silly, making you roll your eyes at times, but overall this affectation enhances how personal of a story this book is. For most of the book I wanted to learn more about how the actual books and the reading itself helped her grow and develop - but halfway through the book I realized that wasn't the book she was writing. After I realized this, I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I can only hope that my daughters love and respect me as much as Ms. Ozma does her father.(less)

I've read more than a few parenting books, especially those concentrating on dad's and daughters. This is a much more personal book than your typical advice book on what to look for in your kid's yearly development. It is a personal account by one man on his own parenting experience of two young daughters (ages 8 and 11 at the time of the book's publication). The writing is very heartfelt and more often than not the advice is good. Because it is a more personal code of parenting, the tips and techniques offered as solid fundamentals in parenting do sometimes come across as a little narrowminded. There are some good points made throughout the book, especially in the areas of not stereotyping daughters into presubscribed societal gender roles. This wouldn't be the only book about parenting or raising daughters I would read, but as a compliment to other more detailed and scholarly books it does have a nice place in the library.(less)
