But I am so glad I read this...it gives so much more insight to Daemon and why he initially reacted the way he did to Katy. Plus, it was awesome reading about Dawson and Bethany! Thanks to Jessi @ Auntie Spinelli Reads for sending this to me as a prize from a giveaway I'd entered on her blog! If you've read Obsidian, then definitely check out this novella...well worth the read!!...more

Katy and her mother have just moved to West Virginia, to a small town where nothing exciting should ever happen. Then Katy meets her next door neighbors, twin siblings Daemon and Dee Black. She and Dee quickly become friends but Daemon and her are a completely different story. They can barely go a minute before they're insulting one another. And then, strange things start to take place that has Katy questioning just who are her neighbors, anyway? As secrets are revealed and dangers increase, Katy's friendship and loyalty to the twins are tested time and again, forcing her to choose whether or not to step up to the plate and accept them for who and what they are.
Katy starts out as a shy bookworm that would rather spend her time reading books, updating her book review blog, and gardening. She has little interest in expanding her social life but as a promise to her mother, she puts an effort into making friends by introducing herself to her teenage neighbors, Daemon and Dee Black. As she gets to know these enigmatic teens better, she starts coming out of her shell more and more, especially where her interactions with Daemon are concerned. By the end of the book, she is emerging as a much stronger, more confident person.
Daemon has 'smarta$$' down to a science and looks wickedly good while doing it. He seems to find enjoyment in pushing all of Katy's buttons, but when it comes to protecting her, there is no better person. He has a strong sense of loyalty and protectiveness for those of his kind, and most especially for his sister. But that loyalty and protectiveness begin to grow to include Katy as well.
Dee is an extremely hyper girl that is also very desperate for real friendship. She is extremely devoted to her brother and is very loyal in her friendship to Katy, standing up for her when others put her down.
The world in which this story takes place is small town West Virginia. When Katy starts paying attention, she realizes that the town seems somewhat divided; those who are nervous or afraid of Dee and Daemon and those that look down on her and the ones that are nervous or afraid. The entire town has a tense atmosphere, like something could explode any day, and strange disappearances and deaths take place that don't quite fit in with the definition of small town.
All in all, this is an incredible beginning to a much needed sci-fi series in the YA genre. I loved the revelation and explanation of the type of entities Daemon and Dee are as well as what their enemies are. And the chemistry and interactions between Daemon and Katy are sizzling! I seriously couldn't get enough of those two and was super excited when I realized there was bonus material at the end of the book (two sections from the book written in Daemon's perspective....AWESOME)! I am seriously contemplating reading this book again once I finish this review, it was that good!
Just an FYI...there is a novella that the author is writing that will release in February that explains events prior to Obsidian. And Onyx, the second book in this series, will release in May. I really cannot wait to find out what's going to happen next with Katy, Daemon, and Dee and will be impatiently marking the days until I can get my hands on Onyx! ...more
