AAminata has lost everything to slavery, her family, friends and eventually her newborn son. She has worked all of her life for the chance to escape. Along the way she meets many different people and it seems that as if every single one of them has lost the hope to escape. She keeps wondering to herself to why they don't even try to escape when they have no one guarding after them. This book truly captures her fight and courage with herself to escape slavery.
I picked this book because i was attracted by the controversial title of this book. I like to read stuff that has a different opinion and unique topic. The cover also attracted me as it shows a black and white photograph of a teenage Negro girl. I wonder what the title "The Book of Negroes" and the photograph has to do with the story. I thought it might be about the black slave trade and the perspective of a the life of a slave.
I am still in the process of finishing this book but i would finish it to find out what turns out to a slave that lives in a normal person's life. What occupations might she have, what friends does she develop and how does her slave memories effect her life in the free world if she ever does escape from slavery.
I would recommend whoever from our class that has a speech topic similar to slavery and the slave trade. It would give them more knowledge on the topic.
