Set in the dystopian future of Atlanta, where magic comes and goes with tech taking over during down times. This is the story of Kate Daniels' best friend Andrea, told in her point of view. She is no longer connected to the order and is working as a P.I. for Kate and the pack. She is hired to investigate a break in and the deaths of shape shifter guards working for her ex-boyfriend. It leads to the big bad trying to get power and Andrea and her group of friends working to thwart this from happening. Very Kate Daniel like.
Still the background story of her trying to come to terms with who she is and where she fits in, gives this a special flair. It is not just her ex-boyfriend, Rafael and her figuring out where they stand, but her figuring out where she stands with the pack. And now the she is not defined by the Order, how she can define herself.
Different than Kate yet many of the same elements. This definitely was a romance whereas I don't consider Kate Daniels a romance though a romance happens in one of her books. Still the story holds the major part of the story at least 1/2 of the time. The romance part was a bit silly but also a bit fun. Her figuring out where she belongs, very good story there. And the story of the Big bad trying to get power, as always, exciting, engaging, and well told.
Great read. Don't know if I like it better than a Kate story or not, excellent. I really liked Roman and want more of him, perhaps and novella or book?

On the re-read, I found the ending to be dragging in a big way. The relationship conflict was a hoot but getting and joining the pack with the challenges was good too but getting to the end with the uber creatures dragged.

No more of the teenage angst romance silliness, that she decided to put in the last book, and back to a Kate Daniel's story with some relation strengthening/building. Very interested in reading the spin offs.

Great Kate Daniels even the second time around. Roman is introduced, I hope he gets a novella, and we get Kate's mother's origins. The big bad this time is an anti-magic group.
Re-read May 18, 2016 So this time I was a bit bored at points, remembered too much maybe. Still this has a lot with the new twist of Kate running her own business, and the relationship and decision making process. Julie becomes a big part of the Kate Daniels world in this one, before this she was expendable as she was just a bit known. She becomes essential as Derek or Jim in this one....more
Why bundle an anthology of new novellas with old novellas? The novella, The Warlord Wants Forever, is old. It is numbered wrong in the Immortals AfterWhy bundle an anthology of new novellas with old novellas? The novella, The Warlord Wants Forever, is old. It is numbered wrong in the Immortals After Dark line up as "BOOK #1" but it is a novella first published in 2006 in Playing Easy to Get with 3 other novellas making 352 pages! It is a novella NOT book 1, it only has 100+ pages of development, 3 hrs 58 minutes on Audible, no matter how many pages are claimed in ebook form, unabridged Audible 4 hours. So... again, why republish this novella and take up space that another novella could have? Frustrating because I only want MoonBound Clan Vampires, as Otherworld I didn't like, at all (YA so doesn't fit these!), and I've already read Warlord. ...more

Although I like the first cover model better, as the new one is too young and not as tough looking, the extras are a nice touch. The new model... not how I imagine Kate, but I guess they are looking to get new readers and are appealing to the younger crowd. So the extras are ones you probably have read elsewhere like "A Questionable Client" and Curran's POVs, if you read the series. If you haven't read the series yet, I'm not sure that a reader would want the extras until they get to book 2 or book 3, when the series hooks you, pulls you in, and you want all the information you can get.

Complicated Urban Fantasy world where descriptions can get in the way and bog down the story. Still the story is solid and in the end, grips you and takes you for a ride.
The first 1/2 of the book was such a set up to the rest, explaining the world and characters and scenes, that I got bored and put the book down for a year. I had forgotten what I had read so had to start it from the beginning. This time I read through even though I had the same.... argh feeling 1/3 of the way through. Since I had so many of my friends push me to read it through, I stuck to it and am happy I did. The play between characters and the story becomes very interesting and even fun at some points. You start to real connect with Kate and her hard sarcastic and sometimes caustic personality. Still some of the scenes, even at the end, were too drawn out. I may have given it a 5 stars if not for these scenes that made me feeling like skimming, yet I knew I had to read through in case I might miss something important.
I will definitely read the next. This is Urban Fantasy/Paranormal, definitely not Paranormal Romance. It is up there with Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson but I like Briggs' way of telling the stories much more.

I really liked this one. Even though there is a lot going on in politics and how the Psy and changelings are going to get along, how the psy are accepting or not the new non-silent psy, and how the E are going to help the net stabilize, the main point focuses on Vasic and his E-psy. I loved how she opened up pretty fast to the idea of being able to be who she is. She immediately forms a connection with Vasic and from there they go to learn about what the E are capable of doing for the net, all the while building a relationship.
Re-read for next in the series. re-read June 8th, 2015...more
