I love the fact that Colin Cotterill would take on a character and a setting, neither of which could possibly have been the result of commercial consideration. How the hell do you sell a book about a 73 year-old Laotian coroner?
Cotterill is a master of pacing, character and setting. The plot may not astound you, but this is a really pleasurable read, as well as being surprisingly educational. Time spent with Dr. Siri is very satisfying. This one will stick with me.(less)

Kraus doesn't play games, he doesn't compromise, he doesn't pander, he just writes the hell out of this utterly original story. This is the kind of book that will stay with me for a long time. It's the kind of book that sends me back to my laptop determined to work harder. Just: yeah. Yeah, this is the real thing.
Look, I want everyone to read what they enjoy, regardless. But for your own growth as a human being occasionally put down your mopey chaste romantic vampire books and read something like ROTTERS: you won't be the same person when you're done. (less)
