Articles engage readers in the most important issues of our day in a way that is understandable and relevant for children. The May/June 2011 issue focuses on connections made between people- whether through the building of roads at the turn of the 20th century, by an intrepid mapmaker in the 18th century or in the social networking sites of modern times. One particularly fascinating article illustrated different ways to use maps of the earth to visualize our global connections. One map pictured the number of toys bought in each country; the next map pictured the number of toys made in each country. Without being didactic, gimmicks like "spot the false story" trick readers into reflecting and thinking critically about what they've read, and the magazine offers many opportunities for readers to respond and contribute. A good, quick read for boys and girls alike that will surely cause readers to analyze the information they encounter in new and interesting ways.(less)
