From the beginning to the end, the story was a great change from the typical YA paranormal book as romance was not the main focus of the story - Katrina was and she wasn't drooling over a "hot" boy (for most of the book anyway) instead getting her priorities straight. The other good change from the norm was how the paranormal was presented, in the background as there is no supernatural foes to fight nor is there any sort of spernatural fighting at all. Its just Malcolm the angel.
This book is pretty much a fairy tale but written for this present day for modern girls with the book's themes of struggle, endurance and even forgiveness. There is also alluding to fairy tales and how Katrina relates them in the present.
The story gave me a laugh at times which is a sign of a good book.
I think this is a great book for girls and even women, to read a light-hearted story, but in the end get a lot out of it.(less)

It started off a little rough in the beginning with the FORCED humor of Jade Moon's clumsiness and run of her "bad luck" because of her "unlucky zodiac sign". It was like the beginning of a romantic comedy. She came across as "meh...another clumsy heroine...breaking crap or tripping over them."
However, the further I read, the story and Jade Moon herself changes throughout becomes more engaging.
The story eventually turns into a drama on Angel Island with prison like conditions for the immigrants coming through there and slowly starts to form into an action story when she leaves the island (one of the best parts of the novel when you read how she does it).
The rest, Jade Moon really shines, showing off her resourcefulness and smarts. This girl...the same clumsy heroine from before..is JUST SO AWESOME.
Its a historical novel and uses the "curse" of the fire horse, while taking place in both China and San Francisco which I love to read about with elements of crime which I did not expect to be tackled.
