This new world is both beautiful and terrifying to the sensibilities of someone who lives in the real world. In this futuristic world there are no feelings, no pain, no pleasure, and no color. If people, be they young, old, or only infants, don't follow the rules and structure of the society, they are "released". Twelve year old Jonas is given the most respected postion available in his community. He is to become the Reciever and works almost exclusively with the Giver. He alone will carry ALL the memories of things gone before. As he becomes the Reciever he begins to think for himself for the first time. Jonas begins to wonder if keeping these memories from everyone else is really the right thing to do, and we come alomg for the ride in his struggle of wrong versus right.
This is a book for a young adult audience. Many of the nuances of the writing would be lost on a younger crowd so it would be best to have children who are developing critical thinking skills to read this book. Adults and children will see their lives and experiences reflected in the memories Jonas recieves, and they will wonder what it is to never know of war, famine, snow, or sunshine. This is a great book to use in a classroom and get students thinking about right and wrong. I was not a big fan of the ending. I felt like you were left to decide what had happened. However this allows students to use their critical thinking skills to decide for themselves how the book ended. The Giver is a winner of the John Newbery Medal.(less)

Wilfrid is friends with all of the people in the retirement home next door, but his favorite is Nancy... Children will find Wilfrid's descriptions funny and adults will be deeply moved by the emotions relived by Nancy as Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge helps her to find her memories.
I think this is a great book to read to students and something adults can connect to as well. It bridges the gap between the young and old and has something for readers of all ages.(less)
