I remember when I was a kid, my mom would always tell me to find the little mouse on the page because he was always somewhere different, so if it was read to children in class that could be a way to engage and question them; you could ask them where the different things were that the little bunny was saying good night to. It's the story of a mailman on Christmas delivering mail to a bunch of different characters, but all of the characters are from different nursery rhymes; each time he delivers a card, there's a little pocket on that page that has the actual card in it that was supposed to be delivered to that character. I just think it's really cool and would do a great job of engaging children and keeping them interested in the story. I also loved it because both of my parents work for the post office (probably why they bought it in the first place), and I love that is has a Christmas theme so it could be read to students around Christmas time. This one dealt with odd and even numbers in the form of mittens. I thought it did an excellent job of explaining the concept, and the pictures would really help children understand it. I also like the section at the end that provides extra information as to how you can reinforce these math concepts in your classroom or at home along with this book.(less)

There are sixteen pumpkins that fall out of a wagon, but it takes some math skills to add up all the pumpkins in the book. In the lesson I observed, the teacher had each of the kids take a couple of cards that had the numbers 1-16 on them, and then the kids had to work together to figure out the order that the numbers went in from 1 to 16. I thought it was a really good lesson. (less)

It was good and also covers the topic of race, but without just coming out and saying "My mom is black and my dad is white." I also liked that it rhymed, but it wasn't a conventional poem. I think most people (especially children) are used to some type of definite rhyme scheme, but I think it would be good to read this one to children so they can realize that there are many different kinds of poetry.
