Even though I've from the devoted Unix/Linux family, I realized that people I train and work with NEED to have a mastery of these skills in the workplace. I'm planning on teaching a course this summer in our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) 2012 and I really need an affordable book from which to teach the class to our participants. My hope is that this book will be the primary resource I can use to mix my experience with, and transfer the knowledge to the participants using CompTIA CTT+ principles.
At the end of our 2012 SYEP, my hope is this book will be effective in helping the participants take their exam for the MCTS and thus gain a marketable skill that employers value and are willing to pay for.
I'll let you know how this turns out with an update in the next few weeks (well before the summer ends). BTW - Good stuff comes with the book in this training kit!
UPDATE: I finished this book. Also, I had a chance to digest the material and use it to teach a class in preparation for the exam. It's much better the the original edition that had numerous technical errors. However, in my opinion, this book alone would NOT help the reader prepare for the MCTS Win 7 exam. It's a good resource, but additional study and lab resources are needed. This pairs nicely with the MCTS book by Poulson. These two books, together with consistent lab exercises (hands on), and some videos would do the job. I gave it 3 stars.(less)

While I thought the book was good, I felt a little anxiety about crossing the line and taking the exam afterwards. I might add, that not only must I pass the exam, but I'm also going to be teaching this course. If others are to follow me, I'm feeling that they might end up feeling like I do (slightly uneasy).
I'm halfway through Darril Gibson's book and I can tell you that you should DEFINITELY read this book before taking your Sec+ exam. You can tell that this is a book written BY AN INSTRUCTOR who understands how people learn. I found this to be an EXCELLENT self-study or a primary book for other Sec+ instructors to use for their training courses and I will be using this book for our Summer Youth Employment (SYEP) 2012 IT training program to teach youth this summer before they head off to college. By going off to college, they'll get credit hours BEFORE they even start! After the summer, we'll be using this book for our Veterans IT training program. If there are any other trainers out there, you won't be sorry if you get this book!
UPDATE: PASSED! Want to get certified? Buy This Book - Study and get it Done.
FYI - For all the people out there who buy the braindumps (Pass4Sure, etc) that give you the test answers for a fee and guarantee you'll pass the exam - there's this thing called a CLEARANCE and you'll never pass the full scope TS w/poly which is where the top earners are in the IT field.
Also, the biggest companies (like Lockheed, Raytheon, Northrup Grumman) are using on-the-job evaluations to actually make sure you KNOW THE SKILLS to go with the certs. I can guarantee that you will be let go, if you use a brain dump rather than actually studying and LEARNING the material to pass the test. Just a though about what I'm observing with the test in comparison to what happens afterwards at the employers.
Because Gibson's books are so well written from an instructor's perspective, you can easily invest the time in yourself by studying, and then passing the exam legitimately. Hope this helps.(less)

Good reading if you're on a plane, train or commute (ride share). The topic of 'consciousness' remains with me long after completing the book. I also appreciate the human ability of 'imagination' now and can value creative talent much more as a result of this.(less)

Key concepts include: Build Correct Frame of Mind; Making Right Decisions; and other resources, tips were included.
In my opinion, this book applies to my 'PT boat vs the Battleship' strategy. The PT boat, though small, can respond to the marketplace changes swiftly while the Battleship (large corporations) will take a long time to avoid an underwater glacier (if they care to).(less)

This is a MUST READ for any executive that is responsible for a budget, and using resources to reach this very powerful base - Women! Ignore them at your own peril. No matter your sector, business (small, medium, corporate, global or micro), politics, or community based organizations (profit or not), please read this book. One company (employer) I just completed a project with lost $200,000 in business and cost one of our partners $2,000,000 sales because key factors in this book were ignored. Please don't make this mistake. Read the book, savor the knowledge, then APPLY IT! IMMEDIATELY!(less)

I was given this book from a colleague (and friend), as a gift to help me discover my talents and abilities. Although I am older, I am finding the book very useful, and I would recommend everyone read it (regardless of age). If for no other reason, this book may help you discover things about yourself, and ways to use your natural talents and abilities in new and interesting ways. Big thanks to @pierrecamp (Pierre Campbell) for the book and the recommendation. I'd also like to know how your reading of Malcom Parvey's book is coming as well.
UPDATE: What can I say. I should have read this book, and applied it to my life years earlier. Highly recommend readers do the same. Be sure to complete the ONLINE component to get the maximum benefit!(less)

But, I must say I like it so far. I'm learning a lot about the CompTIA CTT+ and so far, I can tell you that I wasn't really a trainer until reading this book. I would go so far as to challenge anyone serious about the profession of teaching 'hard' stuff to people who really need to learn for their careers. If that's your goal, then this book is a MUST READ!
Take it in bite sized portions, and then pass the test for the CTT+ Essentials. That's my plan anyway! See you on the other side.

I had been waiting for it because I like his & the other authors style. It gives a simple path to follow to prepare for the CompTIA Security+ exam which I am preparing to take soon.
The CD is helpful. The practise exams help also. Myers passport series seems to be good at taking complex and otherwise intimidating subjects and condensing the material down into bite sized nuggets that are digestible, and you won't have people looking at you weired like you do when you carry most IT technical 'bible sized' books around to read.
I highly recommend buying the book, and I would suggest that you buy the paper book as well as the ebook download for kindle, droid, etc. If you have to make a choice, go for the paper veriosn because you get access to the PDF ebook version too.
The ultimate test for me is to see if I pass the CompTIA Sec+ test in the next 60 days.(less)
