I really enjoyed the characters and the sweet flow of the romance. There was nothing too heavy and it was a fast read.
The story surrounds a young man, Ben, who has come out in high school and ends up in a relationship of sorts with a new guy at school named Tim. They keep their friendship/fooling around a secret but the social pressure is too much for Tim to stand and Ben is forced to move on. Once summer arrives, the two lose touch entirely and Ben leaves for college. As he grows up, he meets and falls in love with someone new, but Tim has a way of popping back up into his life at the worst times, consistently putting Ben in a position where he must make a choice.
If you're looking for a story that is sweet and focused on relationships, this is a great read. ...more

Chulito is forced by the expectations and pressures of friends to leave Carlos behind when rumors begin to spread that Carlos is gay. Where Chulito has decided to follow the path of most young men of his neighborhood--no easy way to live--Carlos has chosen an equally difficult path, living as an openly gay young man in a neighborhood where homosexuality is unacceptable.
Always going against the flow, Carlos is committed to being honest about what he wants in life: an education, a "legit" job as a journalist, equality, and in spite of Chulito's clumsy romantic ways, he wants his old friend to be his man.
Chulito struggles with growing feelings for Carlos and must then decide if those feelings are enough for him to risk his reputation and relationships.
From page one of this book, I was hooked. The writing is wonderfully compelling and natural. I usually find my mind wandering in stories that use a lot of slang, but this was so authentic that not once did I lose focus. I found Chulito charming and I was so caught up in his internal battle that my heart ached with him. The same went for Carlos who goes out on a limb himself when he openly confesses his feelings for Chulito.
I loved this book. I loved the characters. I love this author!! I strongly recommend it!
I'd love to see a sequel for these two characters, as well....more

Miller is a tough as nailsShades of Gray tells the story of a committed FBI Agent, Miller Sutton, and an informant against a drug lord, Danny Butler. Miller is a tough as nails type, but finds that he is growing disillusioned with his job and the lengths he's gone to in the past to get the information he needs or the people he wants. When his surveillance on Danny Butler, a cocky drug runner for a Columbian drug lord, Hinestroza, culminates in an arrest, Miller corners Danny into becoming an informant. With no choice but to take Miller's deal, Danny falls under the protective wing of the FBI and finds himself holed up in a safe house with Miller as his protector. Close quarters and two strong men with no one to talk to but each other become the perfect recipe for passion.
What I really loved about this book was that the emotional conflicts of the characters came across as realistic. The soul-searching wasn't over the top and the characters' struggles with their circumstances was honest. Thank goodness this didn't read as an attempt to clump a story in with an overload of passionate scenes. It was a story with a great balance of passion. I loved that it wasn't just raw sex either, there were strong emotional scenes as well that I found most compelling.
The author uses a lot of flashbacks when I sometimes felt those scenes could have been dealt with in conversation between the characters, but that doesn't mean I thought the flashbacks ineffective. It's just a style thing.
I liked the characters a lot because of their individual strengths and weaknesses. I LOVE two strong male leads. *Shrug*. What can I say?
A very enjoyable read. And a welcome story in a reading drought....more
