The main character, Caitlin, has Asperger's Syndrome, which I think gives an interesting way to see what has happened to the town. I will say, it was really hard to read and there was lots of tears.(less)

I haven't not wanted to stop reading a book in a long time. The characters are all well developed and full. The story is full of mystery and intrigue. You really care about what happens to the characters. The characters all seemed so real. The fantasy aspect was well developed so that it seemed real And believable. I loved it. A second book cannot come too soon.(less)

So I finished it. The story was cute. Dopey, but cute. Maybe a three. Maybe. The main characters are two sisters who bicker back and forth but generally like each other. They find out that they are witches, but they're divorced mom has hidden this from them. This is when all heck breaks lose. Trying to keep their witch and non-witch lives separate becomes increasingly more difficult and just adds to the hijinks. No tragedies, no deaths or depression, just goofy love.(less)

Also eye opening. I have had panic attacks in the past, not to this extent, but I could totally relate. Its scary and it takes over your ability to function. She really makes it real for you. The poetry format works really well too. I think it shows her fear and anxiety really well.(less)

I found myself yelling at the girls sometimes because the only reason they "liked" him so much was because he was cute. They didn't know anything about him, but they were willing to change everything about themselves in order to snag him. Luckily, the girls learned a lot throughout the novel, including how to treat the earth, how to eat healthy, and that its more important to love yourself than to be loved by others.(less)

Boring needlework, disgusting living conditions, and no mind of your own. Educated women? How dare you say such things! Women marrying who they want? FOR LOVE? Egads! How progressive. Waiting until you're in your TWENTIES to marry? Heaven forbid! I thought it was a cute way to show that no matter how awful you think live might be, it was probably worse for someone else. :) (less)

So as a standalone book, I enjoyed it quite a bit. However as a prequel? I think it's going to need to be a sequel TO the prequel. Nothing about Thomas until the end. NO mention of Theresa (unless, like others have suggested, she's DeeDee). Talk about FRUSTRATING! I wanted to learn more about the testing, the training... a whole bunch of stuff! I think he's doing it on purpose though, so he can do a couple of prequels. Grrr.... Mark is a good, strong, complicated character. I liked to see his struggle with having to grow up too quickly. Having to become desensitized to all the horrible things going on around him. Having to lose his humanity as those around him become wild, zombie-like animals. I also liked the Alec character. He was a strong adult role-model. He showed Mark that he needed to stay strong if he wants to survive all the craziness around him. While he was gruff and a little awkward, he was a wonderful counterpart for Mark. To see how quickly civilization falls apart is terrifying. Even within the first hour people start getting angry and aggressive. As things progress, it just gets worse and worse. The government is destroyed, society is destroyed. Any kind of society that is left is only out for themselves, no matter who suffers. Interesting read. I'm sure that there will be more of these... Quite positive.(less)

I cannot believe (and this is not to say that young people can't write well) that this was written by a 22 year old. Its wonderfully written. The main character is very complex, which I really like. She has struggles just like the rest of us, only magnified a million-fold. :) I find it interesting that while it's a future world, because it has common elements that let us know where in America it takes place, it's made more real for the reader. Really great book. Now to pick up Insurgent! (less)

It was a quick read, but it packed a lot in that quick read. It was a little hard to keep track of some of the characters as some of them looked very similar. It seems to be a very small town, and almost every adult male is in the military, but there are a couple of times when you wonder how small it is since the boys get into the bars so easily. The end is so dark and bleak it just causes shivers to run up and down my back. Some reviews say that this is basically an ad for the military, but I would say its quite the opposite. It shows how hopeless people's lives can be when they don't know what's happening. It shows how strong people need to appear when they just want to curl up and cry. It doesn't show the people who join the military because they really want to, because their family really wants them to. This is not a positive book, but its good.(less)

Boys will eat this up like Halloween candy. It is a little on the dark and gruesome side, but not explicitly so, so I could definitely recommend this for older elementary. Its the ultimate struggle between good and evil, and right in the middle of it is this young teen, Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper. He wants so much more from life than just being a pig-keeper, but all the adults tell him he's too young to be a warrior. That doesn't stop him though. He gets caught up in all of it, along with his friends, Princess Eilonwy, the bard-king Fflewddur Fflam, Doli of the Fair Folk and Gurgi, his faithful half man/half animal servant. (less)

Much different than I've been used to reading (no zombies, vampires, demons or suicides). Perfect for a girl that's transitioning into teen fiction. Its about growing up and learning who you really are. Finding out who you really want to be. The main character, Drew, is an outsider. Never really fitting in wherever she is. Then she meets Emmett and everything changes. She sees the world around her a little differently. She learns that she can help shape the world. This is a great book. Not perfect, but definitely recommended.(less)

Did I mention dark? The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is fascinating. The characters are fully fleshed out, with each getting their own time, without being overwhelming. This is definitely a read for OLDER teens and adults. There are lots of murders and a couple of other gruesome details, but I think this only reminds us how much the character Sam has been mentally and phsycially torn down by his parents to make him susceptible to outside forces. Yowzah. That's right. I said it. Yowzah.(less)
