Written several years ago it contains action, drama, time travel between the centuries of the 11700's and the 1900's; it takes place in Scotland and France. It is a very interesting story. The characters are well-written, well defined and relate to the reader as real people.
I quite enjoyed this book and recommend it to all. There is adult subject matter and graphic themes so parent's might want to monitor younger readers....more

I was very fortunate to receive this book as a First Reads Book Giveaway from Goodreads.com. As a bonus, I also received a DVD of the film which was adapted from the book.
This is a book about lifelong friendship between two girls, as they grow up in nineteenth century China in the Hunan province. It follows them through their lives. The story of these woman is alternated with the modern day story of two other young woman who were lifelong friends, too. The women's lives run parallel to each other, even as they lived a couple of hundred years apart.
I have long had a fondness for reading about Asia, it's history and the people who live there. I had the opportunity of visiting Hong Kong and the former Canton, China several years ago and it made quite an impression on me.
I have enjoyed reading other books by Lisa See. She is a fine story-teller. Her books make you feel for her characters and make faraway places seem real and familiar.
I recommend this book to all who are interested in reading about friendship, historical fiction regarding China, and to all that enjoy reading a good story....more

The story of Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is a beautifully written book details the life of a woman, from childhood to old age, as a Geisha. The story of Chiyo/Sayuri as poor child in a little fishing village who was sold to work in an 'okia' or house that trained geisha to entertain at the tea houses in Gilon, on the outskirts of Kyoto, from the 1920's through post WWII Japan.
This book tells of the everyday events of the geisha, their apprentices, teachers, and maids. It gives us a peak at the hardships they endured, the pain they suffered, but also the endurance they showed, the hope that kept them alive.
This is a complex story: it has much beauty but does not shy away from showing us the ugliness. The petty jealousies of the geisha and apprentices and the harm they did; the politics of the geisha in procuring a sponsor, or 'dona' for monetary support; the changes that came with the coming of WWII and the inevitable devastation and the restoration after the war with the American occupation. The end reminds us that all of humanity experiences these stages in life: the struggles, the pain, the hope, and the promise of happiness.
I appreciated this book. The words flowed beautifully and the characters were artfully presented. The story made me thoughtful and contemplative. I recommend this book for mature (over fifteen years old)readers because of adult themes....more

Well written by Daphne DuMaurier, it is an engrossing dark mystery set in the early twentieth century Cornwall, England. The story deals with a woman who becomes the second wife of a wealthy Englishman landowner who owns a beautiful estate known as 'Mandelay'. This estate is as much a character in this story as the people who live in it.
I quite enjoyed this book and look forward to reading other mysteries written by this author. I recommend it to all that enjoy gothic mystery stories....more

It has many well-drawA Russian classic, 'Anna Karenina' is a lengthy yet engrossing epic of a changing Russia near the turn on the twentieth century. It has many well-drawn characters, the main character being Anna Karenina, her busy husband-- a government official, her brother and the members of his family, Count Vronsky-a military ladies man who charms many a woman, and a man named Levin who lives in the country and his family.
Much is happening in this book-it is just before the start of the great Russian Revolution of the early twentieth century. Many of the characters are military or government officials and workers. The lead characters are wealthy landowners with the poor and the workers taking a smaller role. Although this book is specific to Russian history it is also rich in telling the universal stories which are shared the world over. It is a story of love, of pain, of the struggle to find meaning in life, to find one's place in the world.
I found this book fascinating. Written by Leo Tolstoy, a great Russian writer, it is written with in a timeless manner. In this, even in the twenty-first century this story can be related to without problem. I recommend to anyone who is interested in Russian history, epic stories, and dramatic romance.

It is essentially about a grandaughter remembering and coming to grips with the life and death of her loving grandfather, who happened to be a doctor in a war-torn country.
The grandfather had told her stories as she grew up about tigers. She realizes these were not mere stories but lessons about facing death as she searches for the cause and meaning of his death.
This book was beautifully written and the characters were people I could easily relate to...they were well developed.

A historical romance novel, it tells the tale of Martha Russell, a newly widowed young woman who, at the start of the story, has just found out that she will lose her home and everything in it unless she gives birth to a son, an heir to her husband's family fortune. His brother is anxious to inherit; he is a hard man, an immoral man whom her servants fear.
Martha devises a plan to hire her new neighbor, Theo Milkwood for a month to try to conceive a son. This is a purely business proposition. Martha is a serious and very practical woman. This is the story about Martha and Theo: how they came together, had sexual relations before they knew one another, and what they learned.
I enjoyed this book with it's stiff, formal language; it's icy, calculating heroine, and the man of questionable reputation who agrees to this business arrangement. I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction, and a bit of spicy romance....more
