It was complex--about a young woman, who served as a medic in Iraq, was badly injured, suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, married a fellow soldier only to have him cheat on her later, after both had left the armed forces and had relocated to work in China. In China on her own after the break up she becomes involved in political intrigue there and is followed by both U.S. and Chinese covert operatives. She fights for both her life and her sanity while working through the questions of morality and human rights.
I found this book to be well-written and timely. It touched on my personal struggles as well as those of others of which I am acquainted. I found it fascinating also how the video computer games figured into the lives and intrigues. I recommend this book to anyone who finds interest or relates to these subjects....more

Buck is a classic, a landmark book written in 1931. It tells the story of a man and his family who started out as poor farmers in the generation before the Great Cultural Revolution of Mao. Through this story we come to understand the revolution, the feeling of the people there, the growing abyss between the rich and the poor.
Although this book is written as a story of a man and his family, is it actually an allegory of the whole country of China at that time. It is a very stark, extremely thought-provoking story. Much of the book is very sad but, as in life, there are moments of joy and triumph.
I recommend this book to everyone interested in history,, especially the history of China and the far East, although the far-reaching consequences of this book effect us all, even till today. This is adult subject matter, I would think it should be material more suited to the over-fifteen year old reader. After this book, the reader may have an interest to read a book that furthers the story of another family during and after the Great Cultural Revolution, The Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang....more

This is a truly inspirational book.I am very fortunate to have receved this book, the House of Hope by Elizabeth Gifford as a First Reads Giveaway. This is a truly inspirational book. It tells of Joyce and Robin Hill, who, at age fifty, changed their lives and made many children's lives happier and healthier by taking in sick children and starting a foster care program in their home. This project lead them to expand their project to a much bigger place where many more children could be cared for.
This book shows how God can use those who will make themselves available, how he will supply their needs, It shows that there is hope. It tells story after story about poor, abandoned, sick children who were cared for through this couple's vision and how many have been placed with adoptive families.
i enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to everyone. ...more
